- We're taking a look at the production of Don Bluth's "The Land Before Time," including deleted/altered scenes. Hopefully, this will give everyone a good idea on how the movie almost ended up.

Don Bluth once said that kids could handle almost anything as long as their was a happy ending and I think this movie is a great example of this principle. You mostly watch these young dinosaurs suffer through most of its run time but when they reach the great valley and their suffering is over it felt really good. It also seemed to have a great understanding of children's pathology. Sarah for example says some genuinely horrible things but it's forgivable because as a child she doesn't understand the impact of her words. Real children are like this and can be incredibly cruel but with the right guidance learn this behavior is wrong with time
The DVD and Blu-Ray of this movie feature no extras of any kind of the movies production. I assume this is due to the tragic death of Judith Barsi the voice of Ducky and nobody involved with the production wanting to bring up what happened. Having grown up with this movie learning what happened to her made me genuinely tear up
We all want the original cut to be fully animated and you know it!
Uh, I’m pretty sure some of the scenes he was gonna put in would’ve required therapy.
@@letsdraw8062 ooh, that was good. I didn’t notice that before.
Such a good movie. I watched it multiple times as a teen.
I really wish they had kept the scene of Cera looking admiringly up at Littlefoot, while the cloud-spirit of his mother is above him!
Btw, when I heard the music of the 'flashback' scene right at the end of the movie, I teared up like I always do at that music. James Horner's score is AMAZING.
Me to
Sad he died so young. Plane crash apparently. He was the same age as Danny Elfman who looks nowhere near ready to die.
Honestly? I like Bluth's original idea of a silent film with dinosaurs. It would have been an experiment, but I admire anyone who goes down the path less travelled.
Also Disney’s Dinosaur was intended to to be dialogue free (and be directed by Phil Tippet, the same person who made the stop motion short, Prehistoric Beast)
Not to mention the 3D Walking with Dinosaur movie was also gonna be dialogue free…
What is up with Hollywood’s obsession with animated talking dinosaur movies?
I agree
I read that Don Bluth has an unaltered copy. Who knows if that version will ever see the light of day.
Don does not have an uncut version. He stated that, in his biography a few years ago. But i am surten that it is somewhere out there, possibly in the archive of Universal or Steven Spielberg maybe🙂 or some animator somewhere have a secret copy of it. But i think that no one is going to look for it, unless there is a great demand and Universal possibly can get some money out of it!
I'm in agreement in that the the way the pre-final draft script is written has the actions of the characters make more sense, but at the same time, saving the Great Valley reveal for the very end makes for a more emotionally satisfying ending.
I think some scenes were cut to make Cera less of a jerk, she was kind of the jerk in the final cut, but she wasn't outright cruel.
If the deleted animation and audio footage still exists somewhere I hope they release an extended cut of the film. It'd be interesting to hear more material of Judith Barsi, such a shame some of her lines were cut. I wonder if Don Bluth or anyone affiliated owns an uncut version.
It's rumored that Bluth himself owns it
@@stagelinedpro I hope it's true
That would be awesome! Also recently, some new cels surfaced on heritage auctions. Another cel from the extended chase where cera is jumpscared has been found this time with a background and cera’s reaction as well as some others.
@@Random._Idiot Awesome! I hope someone saves the images. Link please?
@@elsakristina2689 i don’t know how to link though. If i did i definitely would.
Wasn't "If We Hold On Together" also dedicated to Judith Barsi just like in ADGTH the song in the credits "Loves Survives" was also dedicated to her? (I thought I read about it somewhere?) Also, sad fact: Poor little Judith never got to see her performances as neither Ducky or Anne Marie in those movies since they were both released after her tragic death from her being murdered. :(
Aloha.
I thought this channel's comment-section/s, if any place,

So i wanted to ask your opinion of a Project of mine,

All of them are non-subtle (some more than others)

I used the reportbutton as it was originally intended;

Just this week, i got 1 Covid-Denier-Channel (yes, the entire thing,

And this feels good.
No, its not a 'Wonder-Miracle-Solution!!', but who needs that? Do you need that?
If so, ok, i dont have anything for you.
Yet, i feel confident about this enough to ask: Wanna join the Fun? The helping?
Both?
That’s what I thought as well wasn’t if we hold on together from the land before time end credits dedicated to Judith and Maria and like love survives from all dogs go to heaven end credits
Not allegedly...the stuff was cut
A couple missing moments of footage do exist.
You can see how they reused the animation in the final cut. The rock they pushed on Sharptooth is visible behind Littlefoot as he talks to his mom’s ghost
I recall hearing about a early draft of the script where all the characters die at the end, with the Great Valley serving as their version of Heaven. I assuming that was from a more Fantasia-esque version of this story and never even came close to being animated though
If I'm not mistaken, I think Bluth said that was an urban legend. I can see why people believed it, though.
All dogs go to heaven but with dinosaurs.
@@ColinLooksBack I thought that the Sharp Tooth was going to talk
There is a theory that that is what actually happened. But then why wouldn’t Littlefoot’s mother be there? Did she go to Hell? Nah, this is more like a Promised Land than Paradise.
I remember hearing about that, except it was a theory rather than something that was part of an original draft and it was after the earthquake. I also remember hearing (I could be mis-remembering this for the theory) from somewhere that before land before time was a movie about dinosaurs, it was going to be a movie about angels. As I said, I could be mis-remembering it
please do one with the Pagemaster (1994) and probably talk about the infamous "Frankenstein" scene that was cut from the film!
Ricco Oh that pencil test thing. I used to see that on the opening of Once Upon a Forest showing a sneak peek or sneak preview of The Pagemaster.
Not gonna lie, I find some of the sequels quite enjoyable, not as good as the original but still fun to watch, my favorite ones are; The Great Valley Adventure, Journey to the Mist, and The Mysterious Island
Yes the mysterious island is my favorite of the sequels! Especially since it's the only movie we got to see blood
Another UA-camr, Jambareeqi, recently released a video in which he rated every Don Bluth sequel, with the understanding that the vast, VAST majority had nothing to do with Bluth himself, but were still sequels to his original work. ua-cam.com/video/gwjzlISxvQ4/v-deo.html
To me sadly the movie suffers for being cut and feeling incomplete but I still love it. It is to bad that Don´s big break through with Spielberg whould lead to so much restrains. I am sure they could have found a better middle ground but what is done is done. I also heard they only had 1 year to finish this movie becuse they did not get the script until then, but they managed to get working on the opening and some shots of the movie that was just background nature stuff.
When I was a kid, I saw this movie in the theater. And I definitely remember that after Sharptooth falls into the pond and Ducky looks down and says, "Poor Petrie," we then see, underwater, Sharptooth's body sinking headfirst(out of frame to the bottom left) down the deep pond and Petrie manages to get free and struggles to get back to the top. Then when I got the VHS, I didn't see that scene happening and wondered why. Could I have been wrong? Years later, I found out I wasn't. Apparently, some scenes did make it to the big screen but later got deleted for home video and that scene was one of them. I will admit as a kid, I did find that scene a little disturbing.
IMO it actually is possible that reels of the uncut version might have been accidentally sent to some theaters and maybe they weren’t able to reach some of them in time to warn them to show the edited version we know instead. There’s a review of the film by Hal Hinson in the Fall 1988 issue of Animation Magazine and he said that the film had a runtime of about 80 minutes. The version we know has a runtime of 69 minutes because of the eleven minutes of footage that were taken out, so it’s possible he was accidentally sent the uncut version too. The last deletions were done just a couple weeks before the film’s release date of November 18, 1988 and the deleted scenes that were edited out a few months earlier in May were fully animated with colour and sound but without the musical score. A big key to pinpointing where the later scenes would have fit is by listening to the official soundtrack because there are a lot of places in the movie where some of the animation doesn’t fit with the music on the OST.
Don Bluth presents: Dinosaur Racism
I definitely agree with your point about the travel montage and Dianna Ross and the composer. As a fan of Shiro Sagisu, it's common for a piece to be trimmed down for a scene. Plus your logic with Ross' vocal track being the first on side B of the vinyl release makes sense, skipping around on a vinyl is hard to do accurately, and if you want to skip a song you're either listening to the last minute or so of it, or cutting into the start of the next song.
The Land Before Time and an American Tail are my top two favorite Don Bluth films
OMG that music is getting me all up in my feels!
Would love to see an Uncut version of my favorite film of all time. Doubt it'll ever happen though sadly.
I only knew about TLBT 1 or 2 sequels in. And I watched those before I watched the original. And I remember thinking the same thing. The first one is pretty good. But I've never been a huge Bluth fan. I love his animation. And I have tremendous respect for his work, and his passion for traditional cel animation. Which is still the *best* animation.
The first movie was just on another level compared to the rest. The score was magnificient. Very emotionnal with a great story. Just the intro with all the creature swimming underwater is enough to get you in the mood. Kinda like The Lion King Intro.
Another little bit that goes over many people's heads that has to do with the original screenplay, is that after Littlefoot and the others help Cera, the narrator claims she was too proud to admit she had gone the wrong way, but as the movie plays out, there is no actual evidence that says she chose the wrong direction
She went *through* the volcanoes rather than *past* them.
Like she went left instead of straight ahead or straight instead of right sort of thing.
Thanks for this. Just found your channel today. I appreciate the time you put into writing and editing this. It's a concise and informative trip down memory lane, albeit one that tells me my memories were edited out of sequence!
I agree that no matter if the movie has cuts or not, it still works
I remember reading a storybook that had the original ending, where Littlefoot went back for his friends. This was before I had even seen the movie (in fact, I saw the sequels long before I saw the original!), so I was understandably puzzled when I saw the movie and saw the ending was different (and how different it was from the sequels! I remember looking at my watch twenty minutes in and wondering why they hadn’t sung a song yet 😅). You can hear the edit in the score; “The Rescue” has the triumphant theme play two minutes in, then switches to danger music, then at the end has the final triumphant theme playing. That sequence of music makes a lot more sense with the original ending over the one we got. Personally? I prefer the original. Littlefoot declining paradise to save his friends makes him much more heroic, and gives added tension to Sharptooth drawing closer to it.
This is such a good video! You should do one for the other Don Bluth movies! Speaking of dinosaurs, you should also do one for We’re Back: A Dinosaur’s Story!
I love the way you present this video!!! I can sense the passion and positivity. Very excited to watch your other videos, you got a new subscriber.
My favorite movie as a kid no doubt! I wish they made kids movies like this nowadays.
Loved this! I can tell you are well informed and genuinely love Cinema, so it's great to watch your videos. Also your drawings are super entertaining (especially Sarah's "Grrr!" face 😆). I hope you're able to make more of these.
Thank you! I'm glad you liked the drawings--Bluth's style is really hard to replicate in the slightest for me, which may be why the characters were all slightly redesigned in the sequels.
I'll probably make more at some point. Happy people like it!
Wow! I hope you do more of these. I love the Land Before Time!
Do more of this, I love learning more about film production.
Thanks for doing this. I love learning about the creation of films. Especially ones that were so good and impactful to me.
Can you please do a retrospective on the noddy shop?
The Land Before Time 6: The Secret of Saudi’s Rock’s script surfaced in July 2019 and it is quite a bit different than the final film. Maybe that deserves a video too.
How can there be a part 6 when we already had one that introduced Doc granted the last VHS land before time movie I got a long time ago was the Great Longneck migration
Saurus Rock
I like these vids. Keep 'em coming.
Great vid, don't too many major changes between scripts personally.
I would love to see more videos like this, always liked hearing about the "What if" of classic films
A series like this sounds fun and interesting 😁👍. As researching previous drafts on certain media I watch fascinates me a lot.
I remember watching the Land Before Time movies a lot when I was little when they aired on Cartoon Network on occasion. Although I feel like I’ve seen the sequels more often than the first one 😅😓. I think it’s time for me to rewatch the first one properly sometime soon 😁.
Great informative video overall 😁👍.
I still ❤LOVE❤ this film even as an adult.
As great as the finished product is, I WOULD love to view the deleted scenes if I were to ever have my own special viewing of it.
I’ve heard the (to be fair, valid) complaint that the narrator saying that Cera was “still too proud to admit that she’d gone the wrong way” didn’t make a lot of sense we (and the characters) still didn’t know where the Great Valley was. However, even as a kid, I took “the wrong way” to mean the way she had chosen to go nearly got her and the others killed, and that’s why it had been the wrong way. I too would love to see Don Bluth’s original version, but agree that this film does hold up, and is one of the most beautiful children’s films I have ever seen.
This was og ice age
In the Novel of The Land Before Time, the Sharptooth wanted to kill Littlefoot because he blinded him in his right eye.
I really enjoyed this.
1:49 Oh yeah, I’ve heard about that. 1:53 I don’t remember seeing that part of the missing sequences. Anyway, I wonder what it would’ve been like if the Film’s sequences wasn’t cut out & would really ran 80 maybe 90 minutes?
Dylan Geltzeiler the one at 1:53 resurfaced more recently.
HypnoGaming Well I think one of us should Contact Bluth Studios about this.
I know this came first, but Littlefoot's mother is coloured like a NightWing from Wings of Fire.
Not gonna lie, except for having Petrie whistling and not having a narrator. I actually wish that they went with the original version than the one we got
Really hope the extended cut comes out some day.
I want you to do more script screen videos
there was also a cut scene at the end when there all on top of the hill where littlefoot says "now we can always be together"
It breaks my heart and angers me how butchered this beautiful film became. You can see it through all of the choppy editing. It's so sad. Parts were removed or changed around for seemingly no reason or purpose at all. I know that the film is still decent, but I feel very unsatisfied knowing what the original ending was going to be. The original script makes more sense and adds more character development and more bulk to the story. Not to mention it would have made more sense. I truly hope that one day these scenes will be released or remade by dedicated fans/animators. Why Spielberg, would you do this? Against Bluth's wishes. So disappointing, I'll never understand.
can you link me to the script you found? I really wanna readi t!!
I heard there was a good bit that was cut from the film and i know a lot of people have wondered as to what happened to the cut portions of the film
Some of the scenes in Fantasia (1940) remind me of the original Land Before Time.
That was s cool vid
You should look uo the original toy story 2 plot. I saw it once it was interesting
Ever take notice to how Sharp tooth almost always has one eye closed?
I might have some script to screen suggestions in mind:
. Aladdin (1992)
. Looney Tunes Back in Action (2003)
. My Little Pony: The Movie (2017)
. Monsters Inc. (2001)
. All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989)
. Beauty and the Beast (1991)
. Toy Story (1995)
For each one Aladdin's mom, Pre Historic Tweety, Older Boo, Uppercrust Gaston , and Jackass Woody .
Can you add Space Jam (1996)? I would like to see your take on the project’s history from the birth of the “Hare Jordan” commercial all the way to the final film.
I love this Video-Clip! It's cool! 🙂😉👍❤
Where did you come across this script, if I may ask? As a HUGE fan of this movie, I found this fascinating. Also, are all the drawings shown here concept art from the studio?
Just imagine how different and possibly controversial the movie would be if the deleted scenes were actually in the movie.
I like the idea of Littlefoot finding the Valley alone and going back to help his friends- it's a great moment for his character
Cool!
Good video
You need to try to do Toy Story one next
Can you *please* do another script to screen video? I'm *itching* to see how the original draft(s) of "Rock-a-Doodle" played out.
happy 35th anniversary the land before time!!!(no. 1 favorite don bluth work alongside the secret of nimh & dragon's lair.:3)
love this movie alongside the sequel(really only found a few of the sequels outright bad as i liked how it was kinda like a dinosaur version of the jungle book.) and find a lot of the deleted scenes interesting like the sharptooth attack/him trying to dodge an uprooted rock and even lava during the earthquake, the dinosaur version of the mcoy's(would've explained them attacking cera outside desperation from hunger/just to bully considering they don't encounter other talking dinosaurs outside the stampeding sauropods.) and especially the ending(prefer the ending we got seeing littlefoot return to save his friends on his own not knowing about the valley/they had good enough reason to kill off sharptooth especially in the novel showing his sadistic heart but do wish the shot of littlefoot looking at his mother over the cliff had been in before the embrace.).
I have an early draft script of Annie and would like to see a script to screen of that
Thursday 6th August 2020. Thank you sir for sharing this video. The Land Before Time is a beautiful film and quite similar to Bambi. I also like to believe that The Great Valley is really Heaven for Dinosaurs. All the good dinosaurs go there. Littlefoot, Cera, Ducky, Petrie and Spike. Sharptooth never made it into the Great Valley because he was evil. Once again thank you and bless your heart. From Virginia Clark.?! :) :( ;)
Pretty sure it was confirmed they didn’t die
@@ChicagoMel23 Yes, you're right. But the Great Valley is just like Heaven.
Land before time is a pretty good movie and it is cool to hear what it would have been like if it were uncut if you do any more maybe do a Disney movie like Aladdin I know you did talk about some of the early draft of Aladdin in your returns of jafar video but there is a lot more of interesting cut scenes for that movie
Hello. Is there a way you can share the screenplay you came across with us?
More please
Tbh, i liked the vhs sequels too
Really liked this video. While I do love this film I would love to see an unedited cut simply for the sake of lost media. A longer t-rex attack scene would've been great, it wouldn't have bothered me as a kid, sometimes I think we are too overprotective in instances like this.
Gosh, I miss the way animation used to be made back in the day. Not just style-wise but also story-wise as well. Hopefully, the good old days will return somehow 'cause what's going on in the animation industry today is... No words about it.
Btw, great job reading the scripts. Where do You manage to find them?
I really would like to see a Script to Screen episode about Rock a Doodle.
What is the name of the song in the beginning of this video?
I know this is off topic but when’s history of Disney villain songs part 5 coming?
I definitely can't forget that series, thank you for reminding me. It's a bit difficult due to copyright reasons (playing the songs at all could get me flagged). I'll see what I can do.
.3. I wish to see the movie in all it’s uncut glory, but I’m too scared to see it all.
#Releasethebluthcut or #Releasethemissing40minutes
I think that at one time, The Great Valley was meant to be what they called Heaven. I can understand why they chose to change it into an actual valley.
I never forgave Cera for calling Littlefoot's mother a stupid longneck after she SAVED HER LIFE earlier in the film. Never even apologized...
Even by movie 7 or 10 ?
@@nicholassims9837 I didn't get that far. I only watched one or two of the sequels and I barely remember them.
the fact that the land before time has 14 movies is just p a i n
I love the land before time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd give anything to see this film in its original form :(
Wait a minute, New Dream Land Before Time Collection; 1 Land Before Time Movie in Beta-Max, 4 Land Before Time Movies in Laser-Discs, 4 Land Before Time Movies in VHS, 4 Land Before Time Movies in DVD-Videos, 1 Land Before Time Movie in Blu-Ray, Land Before Time TV Series in Prime Videos, Land Before Time Book Series, Land Before Time Deleted Scenes in Website Vlogs, and Land Before Time Computer and Video Games.
Wait. The hell scene was cut from all dogs go to heaven? Why dose my disc have it in the movie? And I dont mean in the extras I mean in the literal movie?
The Croods plot almost reminds me of that movie
Sorry, I was pretty stoned when I wrote my first two comments, should've phrased it in a more professional way better...

Do all dogs go to heaven script to screen
hello?
As a kid I’ve always believed Littlefoot’s mother was his adoptive mother ( it’s how I saw the journey of his egg to her in the movie)
But movie 10 had to ruin that for me.
If that theory was the case then Littlefoot could still meet his biological herd including his biological parents but I’m kinda glad they didn’t go down that path because it means that Littlefoot would’ve had to choose between his adopted grandparents and his biological family

Hey, you know what?
Yes but land Before Time have too many sequels
I Still love Disney animated films Number 1 (Except Not Talking About the Stupid bad CGI Disney Films I Hated And Despised From 2001 or 2002-Present)
And While Universal Animated Films Like My beloved Favorite Non-Disney Delight The land before Time When I Saw Them As A 2 year old In Layton Utah Along With The Disney Classics I've Seen In My Toddler Year Childhood
Is Second Place Number 2
And Third Place Number 3 I Guess Is Dreamworks Like The prince of Egypt Though Okay But Powerful
But Not The CGI Ones I Don't Like And Don't Want Like Shrek And Other Nope Ones I Said And Despised
You need Spider-Man and that's not that that would make the movie amazing you need Miles Morales
I hate Schpielberg
Somehow, I wish they would make a CGI remake of this movie, just so they could add in scenes that were cut out of the original .
I loved this film as a kid, but ugh the design of the Dinosaurs are ugly in my opinion. Bluth is a great animator and supporter of the animation art and legacy but his storytelling and character designs are not my cup of tea.
