I never thought I would see a Hendrick Motorsports chassis abandoned like this, it could have honestly been used up until now and maybe got a few more wins
I work at ACS speedway doing nightly janitorial and weekend rental cleaning. This car sits just outside our supply storage/break room. I’ve always been attracted to this car for some reason, so I did a little research and found the last time it raced was at the Charlotte Roval, finishing 3rd and advancing Clint in the chase for the cup. It’s awesome to know that it’s a piece of history for so much more.
I can add a little more to this story. ACS fire safety crews had training for the event in February this past Monday. This particular car is used with three or four other retired SHR Ford Fusions for training purposes. This particular chassis is set on fire and extinguished. The whole front of the cars sheet metal is now melted, the steel tubing in the engine bay charred. It’s unfortunate that this particular car is the one they torch, but I guess if it was important to Tony, he wouldn’t have parted with it.
The car is inaccessible to me now even if I wanted to (not that I’d ever steal from an employer). It’s been moved to the closed drag way site to bake in the sun with the safer wall sections for the Clash.
I'm surprised this car was never bought away and put on display. It'd be an icon at SHR. Usually we see this with small teams, having to reuse the chassis of their big wins due to costs, but there really isn't a reason Tony couldn't have bought it.
I'm sure there is a reason. Tony, more than anyone, would love to have the car. Just because he's rich doesn't mean he can pluck property off the company he part owns and have it for his own.
Agreed, if I had the money as a die hard fan of his back in the day I’d be lobbying to get that and or restore it in some capacity if it wasn’t beyond repair.
I'm just glad this isn't his last win car in his life, but for Nascar. (Not saying anything you did or said was wrong.) I'm just glad he's back to dirt and winning.
There’s a “sister” car to this that ran the road course races the chassis in the video didn’t run, it is currently being restored by Vintage Race Car Restorations (check FB page). Ended life as a backup to the Roval in the same Mobil 1 design. Chassis 14-731 that ran the road course events that the chassis in the video didn’t run. Ended as a backup for Bowyer 2017 Roval, same livery as video chassis Chassis 14-731: 2012 Sonoma 2012 Watkins Glen 2013 Sonoma 2013 Watkins 2014 Sonoma 2016 Watkins Glen 2017 Watkins Glen (bowyer) 2017 Roval (bowyer backup)
The Petty car is in “storage” at the Smithsonian. I visited a few years ago hoping to see it, (and the Don Garlits Swamp Rat 30 Top Fuel Dragster) and got told that they were in storage, not scheduled to be on display any time soon, and that “the Smithsonian couldn’t possibly display all of the artefacts they have in their possession” Sad face
I was at the race where tony won, it was epic Kinda makes me sad it’s just rusting away...my dream car is a road legal nascar race car...that would be a nice one to use
while google maps is still behind on the california speedway it's over inside turn out front ended burn up but you can still see the 14 and red back side
Damn I remember having recoded that Sonoma race. Programming errors/delays caused the recording to end (iirc) just as they were entering T7 on the final lap.
You need to do some research on the old school cars Dave Marcus's last win in 82 at Richmond that car was a cut down big car that started out as a die guard racing 88 car built by Donnie Allison in hueytown Alabama it was probably the longest serving car at the Grand national level then you can look up the cotton Owens car which started as a car driven by Pete Hamilton and then ended up with Marty Robbins driving it for many years and Marty had cottonwood a magnum body on it and then 81 finally replaced it with a Junior Johnson built Buick then the last really cool one is Richard Petty's 200 win car that car started out probably in 81 as a Buick driven by either the king or Kyle then Kyle Petty ran it on the big tracks in 83 it was his super speedway car which had 7-Eleven colors when buddy parrot-findered the car to narrow it up some before the Daytona race a guy got some of the plastic front bumper and it's got it it has the orange 7-Eleven paint under there some somebody that work for King has part of the front bumper off that car but when they reskinned it or they put new fenders on it
They should've retired the car immediately and put it on display if they weren't going to use it at Watkins Glen that year. A restored version with pristine bodywork just wouldn't carry the same sentimental value.
@@nathanstroud2223 the damaged body panels are still around, saved by Stewart himself. if they were gonna attempt a restoration I say use those. should’ve been preserved earlier like ya said but better late then never, I guess
@@burlingtonfan7492 I don't know how easy it would be to stitch together those body panels once they've been carved up. That's why I assume they would put an intact body with a Code 3 Associates wrap on it. Stewart's only 2 wins in the Gen 6 era came with that sponsorship on the car.
whats interesting to me is it was a road course car obviously tony ran it a few times at sonoma and the glen then bowyer at the roval. but then it ended up in phoenix? and then auto club? who is taking junked cars across the country?
It was bought by ISC to use in training scenarios for the safety teams at the tracks. They would have shipped it wherever it was needed. You can see in the video that the car has been in fire. They will use it for jaws of life training next. All the tracks have a few of these cars sitting around for this reason.
It was meant to be on display at the Motorama Custom Car & Motorsports Expo in Ontario. Where the proposed Canadian Motor Speedway was meant to be built. But I really don't know, my theory is that it's owned by either Gordon or Rick Hendrick personally.
It isn't really abandoned. Most likely ISC bought it and shipped it there. The tracks all use old cars to train the safety teams. It looks like it was set on fire already. They will also use it for jaws of life training.
I'm surprised that Tony never ended up buying the chassis from Hendrick outright. That's his legacy, after all.
He did buy it. How do you think it ended up with Ford sheetmetal?
@@jasonstacy5587 he means the complete car, not just the skin

Weird question, but if it's abandoned then why hasn't anyone picked it up and towed it away?
It isn’t abandoned. NASCAR uses it for training purposes to train their fire safety crew at the track.
@@nintendrew87 u didn’t try to snag a piece off it? I would’ve tried to get the vin tag or something that was original to the win.

Expect this chassis to be purchased in the very near future. Exactly the sort of drive that the NASCAR UA-cam community can come together for
It’s crazy to think Smoke was small enough to fit into a Champ car.
One also has to think that the all-around larger AJ Foyt and Robby Gordon also happened to fit in the cars in the 1992-1996 period.

I LOVE these “where are they now?” car videos!!! They are among the best NASCAR content on UA-cam.
One of my favorite NASCAR series on UA-cam. Very original, interesting and well narrated. Keep it up!
There is absolutely no reason that car cant go for a lot of money at a collectors auction.

Kinda sad that it's sitting there in Fontana as a Ford Fusion when it probably should be sitting on Tony's ranch in Indiana as a Chevrolet SS
Glad Tony at least got the metal out of it. What a win, and glad to see the car lived on a little while longer.
