I've tried both. I prefer the fern with leather back, leather head rest, and fabric seat cushion. The Embody backrest is more narrow so it doesn't feel that great for ppl with wider backs. The embody lack of arm adjust was also another issue. I have a desk with a keyboard tray and the fern arm adjustment makes day-to-day work a lot easier on my wrist. The Fern leather backrest option doesnt feel as flexible as the fabric/mesh option. Fern warranty is pretty amazing. At least for my area, they will send someone out to your house and replace/repair the chair free of charge.
Yep, the Logitech Embody with the overly upper curved upper back (which could cause posture issues) with, what could've been amazing arms, but no 4D - they don't slide back, so you cannot lock into the desk, there's always a space. Super super annoying. Going to buy the Fern and test it out.
May sound weird, but I love slouching on my Embody. Whenever I'm chilling or doing something that doesn't require me to be upright, I just slouch and it's super comfy. Also, being upright 24/7 is pretty unhealthy despite "ergonomics." It's important to switch up position a bit every now and then and stretch the body. The only downside was the pixels in the back digging into my lumbar - as you mention in the video a tip for that and all. Nothing I did resolved that issue, even when sitting exactly how it wanted me to, it still didn't feel right until I grabbed some zip-ties and just pushed the pixels back enough to be perfect for my lumber and back. It's probably the most comfortable lumbar "support" I've ever used now. Love this chair
I've had the Herman Miller Embody for 2 years and 1 month, purchasing it soon after the pandemic started. At the time, I figured if I'm working 40+ hours per week at home, I should invest in a product that's better for my back. I actually found this Ahnestly channel and purchased the Embody based on the recommendations, so thanks, Mr. Ahn! It's the best ~US$1,500 product investment I've made, with my mattress being a close second. The only negative really is that it does squeak a bit if I move, as Mr. Ahn shows in this video, but it isn't a big deal. I guess the only con is that I'm now back to working in the office part of the week, and well, I can really tell that chair really sucks.

FERN is our chair in the office and the best chair I've ever used. I am 5'3 woman with average east asian body. I have neck pain and the height (semi-high back) and mesh type material perfectly support my neck head and upper back. I have tried full-head support/ high-back and it gives me head and neck pain. This one supports my neck (from the top or C1) and the mesh type is gentle not hard on your muscles. For someone who is working too long in front of a computer and using mouse and keyboard (as an accountant), the swivel and adjustable height armrest is something I really need. They said it is kinda not sturdy or easily movable, but for me its perfect as you can swivel it by just moving your arms with just little effort, it follows your natural body movement. It is very helpful because you can change the position of your arm and shoulders and not just fix into a certain position that causes neck-shoulder-back muscle spams after a long day of work (of course you still need to match it with adjustable table and monitor). I do have a Lazy boy office chair at home, perfect lumbar support and everything yet I would still get neck spasms specially during busy days, just because it does not have a height and swivel armrest. I really want to get the FERN. Though I've seen that there are available adjustable armrest being sold separately in the market (not Haworth) I'd probably just get that for now.
Currently bought the gaming embody, it was my first actual chair so I took me a while to get used to. I ordered the fern a couple days ago also waiting for that chair to try out! Ill see which one I settle with. I recommend you don't throw away packaging for either. They are charging me a 10% restocking fee if I want to return embody..
@@farzadjahanfard I kept the Fern and returned the Embody. The Fern was quite a bit cheaper, and I found it to be comfier to sit on as a skinny guy (the Embody basically doesn't have any cushioning compared to the Fern).
i bought the herman miller embody gaming edition and i'm blown away. i'm a skinny guy and i've never sat in a chair that hasn't made my ass hurt. this i can sit in forever and be super comfy. literally changed my life
@@RathalosEmperor that chair is horrible. Just sold mine and I'm looking for another one... You are not alone man. Titan = Brick. Ps. Your are not fat.
I've got fern and it's silent when you upgrade the noisy wobbling hand rests. Take them out from the chair base sleeves (you need to push from the bottom) and then insert a small plastic (1,5-2mm thick) in between the sleeves and the arm rest inserts to fill the gap. You can also use a duck tape to tighten the inserts because they are from 2 parts so you could take the arm rests out but since they are not tight the whole arm rests are wobbly and noisy. When you duck tape the two parts together the arms rests are then sturdy and make no noise. If you have lumbar and it starts to make squeaking noises you need to take the fabric down then the front mesh then the lumbar pillow and then you put some vaseline on the metal moving parts of the lumbar. Then you put everything back together and it's like new.
@@Areyouduckingserious you are absolutely right but when you can easily fix it then I don't care since any warranty hassle would take longer and wouldn't be fixed anyway because it's design flaw.
man , you are amazing , there are a lot of paid reviews out there and finding a true review is much appreciated! subscribed and took my decition for the embody :)
Hey! I appreciate that a lot! I hope you love the chair! Please consider using my links when you buy your chair (it helps the channel a LOT), and let me know what you ultimately think about the Embody!!
I bought both to try them, and then keep one. There are no dealers near me that have both. I should say the HM customer service is much more prompt but the delivery service they use (in EU) is terrible. Haworth doesn’t respond to any of my messages but I did get the chair the next day. The embody is a perfect chair for perfect people that have a perfect seating position. If you are flawed like me and don’t always sit perfectly, the Embody can be hell due to the fixed lumbar in the lower back area. I considered putting tie wraps on it just to get the lumbar to move back a few mms, that would already be sufficient for me. But why should I do this on a chair that costs 1400 euro? I kept the fern and never looked back…. Although I do wish that Haworth would sell the Digital Knit to non U.S. markets. Sucks! Btw I got the fern without lumbar but you can always put a pillow in the back should you change your mind. Some people put a pillow from IKEA in it.
I tried both of these chairs but returned the Gaming Embody because the seating area was painful to sit on after a while. The handles at the front sides of the Embody that you use to pull forward to extend the seating area are rock solid plastic. So if you spread you legs slightly when you sit (like most guys do) your thighs are gonna be resting on that hard plastic instead of the seat padding in the centre. This caused me no end of pain whether i had the seat fully retracted or fully extended, so I ended up selling the Embody after about 6 months. I then got the Fern and found it much more comfortable. The fern has an actual proper thick cushion with no hard plastic edges on the seating area. The material was a little firm at first but after a month or so it became softer and its now really comfortable. The Embody definitely looks nicer but the fern wins on comfortability.
@@Adri_sin_an I got the chair a few days ago, and after using it 5-6+ hours a day, I can comfortably say that my back is going strong. Had the Aeron chair before this and even that would sometimes make my back hurt after longer sessions since I only had the basic back support. Ever since I got the Embody gaming, it feels like I'm sitting on a cloud and haven't had any back pain since. Worth every penny in my book.
@@JoseMartinez-yy5hh Did you have Aeron? Size B or Size C? Any problems with Aeron that you switched to Embody? Missing Lumber from Aeron on your Embody? Missing the forward tilt feature from Aeron for tasking?
I just bought the Embody Logitech chair yesterday 35% off the list price at Design Within Reach. I'm replacing the Herman Miller Mirra 2 chair, which I love the back, but the mesh seat has been an issue. In the winter, I wear jeans, and the back right rivet tore a small hole in mesh! I specially am replacing it with a chair that had a soft pad. rather than the mesh. I trust Herman Miller and look forward to receiving the chair. (5'10" 265, by the way!)
I ended up going with the Fern. I really liked the recline on the Embody, but the seat was just too hard for me. I'm a skinny guy and I needed it to be more cushy. The Fern, on the other hand, was just what I wanted. The recline is almost as good as the Embody's, and every other aspect I felt was an improvement.
Forgot to mention that on the Embody your tail bone will start to hurt after about 30 minutes of use and the pain will become unbearable because it does not distribute weight properly. Sadly, I had to return mine.
@@Ahnestly I am experiencing the same issue as Carlos. I am a lawyer and have to spend long hours sitting in a chair. I have noticed that after extended sitting, Embody starts giving me pain in the tailbone region. I assume it's because of that pixelated material, which is more firm than a normal foam seat. Also, BTOD tv recently did a 3 year review of the Embody and highlighted the same issue with Embody's seat.
@@ib78 I think the pixelated idea is absolutely fantastic however, the execution fails because the pixels create small but really strong pressure points (pixels). Overall, the sensation when first sitting down is great, until that small pressure point starts to kill you
It's because the Embody lacks sacral support, ulike the Aeron (with Posturefit SL) and Mirra 2 (with Passive Posturefit). I used to experience excruciating tailbone pain with my cheapo office chair, after sitting in it for more than 2 hours. However, I didn't experience any tailbone pain, whilst sitting on the Aeron or Mirra 2.
I have been using the Embody for a few weeks. The fact that it has superb pelvic support and also being able to adjust the back tension makes a world of a difference compared to other chairs in my opinion. I think that makes it provide better support for a wider gamut of bodies. In my case, when I received I was in a point where I had so much pressure on my lower back that I couldn't sit in other chairs for more than 30min without having to rest in bed for another 30min. My productivity at work was at its lowest and I was very concerned with my back. And when standing up I could feel a lot of pressure on my lower back, similar to what it feels to clench your hand into a fist... just that it was all the time, I couldn't relax those muscles one bit. The moment I sit on the embody, all that pressure dissapeared. I had perfect support on this chair, my back felt more rested than laying on the bed (and I had recently bought a premium mattress). Right now my back feels renewed, there is no pain at all either when using the chair or when standing up. I can sit all ay on that chair without issues (and boy, I needed to catch up with work due to me not being able to sit for even an hour in previous weeks so I sit on the embody a lot these past couple weeks). It was extremely expensive, specially in my country, where an Embody costs more than what 95% of he people here earn in a month, but wow, I don't regret it one bit.
6'5 been trying the fern for almost 30 days now. Back is really tall snd comfortable, however the rest of rhe chair falls short. Non locking arm rests make for a really flimsy and constant moving experience. The adjustable lunbar support is ok? Kind of doesnt hit the right areas for me personally. Seat pad is far too small for me to be properly adjusted. Hopefully this helps another tall person decide :D
@@Flybeck i'm wondering if i should buy an atlas head rest that you could really put up. Or Heard about steelcase gesture as the top chair for tall People
I purchased the Fern with digital knit and absolutely love it. I have been remote for nearly a decade and it's by the best chair I have ever used. Not to name drop on your channel, but Marshall Fox did a review that won me over: Haworth Fern Review: Best Ergonomic Office Chair. Great video man!
I always feel weird when people promote other things here…but I saw his review a bit back and respect the work he puts in. Keep killin it @hivaluedesigner
I struggled with this decision ... but in the end, the orange color with metal base on the Haworth was the tie breaker.. it works great with my work space / gaming computer and is beyond comfortable for hours and hours .. it ended up being about $200 cheaper too, when fully loaded.
Thanks for your reviews @ahnestly finally pulled the trigger on the embody! Been watching your videos for a few years now and appreciate everything you do! I've referred you to anyone I know looking at office chairs
Your previous videos on the Embody helped me decide on one. I bought the gaming one from the sale a bit back and absolutely love it. The cushion is a bit difficult to describe and I don't think receives enough discussion. It is a suspension cushion and has a bit of bounce that a purely foam cushion does not have. This was a surprise to me and how comfy it is. The back is also very supportive and gets most of the attention, rightfully so, in the reviews. It is a bit noisy but obtrusive and is a good trade off for the comfort. I'm an attorney and after a long day, I can put my feet up, move my butt forward and the flex point mid way up (also something not really discussed) cradles my shoulders perfectly and allows my head to rest at the top of the seat back. Super comfy in that condition also. I'm falling asleep just thinking about it, it's so relaxing. Just for reference: 5'10", 205#, athletic build, and bad back (arthritis and bulging lumbar in same area and nerve pain in the muscle adjacent).
@@TheTommyOhh Yes. Arthritis can be related to autoimmune issues or wear due to improper form while exercising over extended periods of time or very underdeveloped muscles for the load etc. Bulging disk is when the capsule that houses the cartilladge between vertebrae breaks down or gets disrupted in a way that leads to it slipping. So if you're comfortable sharing, may i ask how you managed to do this? Especially considering that you are "athletic"? I find it to be a very scary condition so id be interested to hear what happened.
@@TheTommyOhh So I'm assuming with bad form and rushing the weights? I'm only asking because I'd like to avoid it myself. These injuries are very normal in overweight and older people. Weight lifting will usually greatly decrease injury risk if you don't overload. You probably have a good shot at healing as long as you don't deadlift everyday.
I have both! We have Embody at the office and I have a Fern at home. I thought I hated by Embody until this video. You showed me I can sit upright where I thought I was stuck leaned back. Can't wait to get to the office tomorrow to check it. Great analysis of the fern and it's seat issue. I'm 6'0" and it's somewhat annoying that it's like that
where does he show how to sit upright? Watched the video but I may have missed it. I have the Embody and it doesn't seem to do a good job supporting you when you sit upright so I'm on the fence on returning it.
@@michrisoft it just tightens the firmness of the upright pole, it doesn't move the backrest forward at all. I also tried the embody and just didn't fit the bill with how I sit upright, regardless how far back I moved my butt. Have a leap v2 now and the back is basically perfect for my upright seating style, feels like it was molded to me lol. Really gotta try out as many chairs as possible to find one that works for you.
@@winebartender6653 I mean, just stand up and twist the thing and you can clearly see it does move the angle of the back to be more upright or further back. It doesn't really go all the way up and hold you there, but that's not what this chair was made to do because you're supposed to be leaning into the back.
"How else are you supposed to try them?" If you are situated in NA, there are Haworth and Herman Miller showrooms, in Canada for example there are a couple in Toronto, as well as their resellers offering showings. I went to the showrooms to try both chairs for my decision. Ask them to let you sit for a while just to get a feel of the chair, alone.
Awesome review. Lots of info. Embody owner the last five years and loved it. Best chair I've ever owned. Gave it to my niece (she's built my last 2 custom pcs) for her dorm. Got myself a fully loaded Fern a couple weeks ago as replacement. Absolutely love it so far!
I really have a bad time on my Embody. Have it since 1 year and cannot say I'm confortable on it. I have pain on my coccyx after a couple of hours sitting on it, and my back also hurts in a specific way: If you draw a vertical line on the middle of the back rest, the zone of this line is very hard on the bottom half part, no "cushion feel " and it exactly on this zone that my spine bones are. Result is that I have a lot of pain on my spine and some time I have to move forward to detach my back from the seat.
I've owned both briefly. Instead of the air bubble lumbar support on the Fern, I made a lumbar pillow using millet hulls and stuffed it in the opening. It feels pretty amazing for me because the hulls conform to your body but still feels sturdy and supportive.
I have the Fern, my partner has the Embody. She loves her chair and I love mine, but we both somewhat dislike each other's chairs! The seatpan differences are exactly why for the both of us.
To be honest, it's going to be personal preference. Got the Embody and liked it, but thought I would like the Fern better after trying one for @30 minutes. Sadly, for some reason I had the same falling out and slouching issue in the Fern that he demonstrates. Same with the gap at the rear of the seat pan. This ended up hurting my back more and I went back to the Embody.
the dealbreaker for the embody is not being able to adjust the lumbar curve position. i really wanted it to feel good but it's curve is too close to the bottom and I'm too lightweight to push the base down enough
Had both chairs to try out, Haworth is better and cheaper. The embody made my thighs uncomfortable because it’s not a real cushion, it’s just a bouncy web of rubber bands. The Fern has real cushion but the fabric is warmer than the Embody. The cushion is more comfortable for me. The great thing about the Embody is how bouncy and how light it feels, but gives an unwelcome pressure on my thighs and tail bone.
I got the Fern chair with the additional lumbar support and the metal frame, black mesh version. I must say that nobody talks about the material used for the seat. Its a rough textured material. Its great because if you sit in it properly your butt is not going to move towards the front of the seat. So you don't lose the ergonomic position. I weight 90kg (almost 200lbs). But it can be a downside for some people. Some people prefer softer exterior material. I'm coming from a Jysk gaming chair and I ain't going back to that. One more thing that worked for me, was the keep the seat all the way back. Not extended. I've seen that if I extend the seat it makes me slide in the chair so I was rounding my lumbar. Again, not great for ergonomics. ( I think its fine to do it once in a while but most of the times you want to keep the correct posture) . Great chair, really like it. ( And great video! )
One thing to keep in mind with the embody. If you are a bigger person. like 6-2 and above and a bit larger in size. you will feel the edges of the embody on the top of the back rest. i like the chair very much, but this was a dealbreaker for me.
@@FeelLikeGastly It's really hard for me to say but I keep coming back to my Herman Miller Embody. Chairs I've tried/have: Steelcase leapv2, steelcase amia, steelcase reply, steelcase criterion, Humanscale libery, Humanscale Freedom with headrest and without and with gel seating and some with foam and another in leather, Humanscale World, Herman Miller celle, Herman Miller Equa leather highback, Knoll Generation(Wild Card weird chair pick I like) and I had a couple steelcase thinkv1 but I only have one right now I use outside.
@@MakinaDeMuerte that’s good to know! with your experience, im 5’10 and 180lbs. not sure what chair to look at or try. Do you think the embody is worth the try? Definitely want to buy a premium chair. I love the look of the embody, just hesitant in case the shoulders get pushed forward.
@@FeelLikeGastly Def. worth a try, it's a very unique chair design and function. Yeah, the shoulder thing is a common complaint... I'm hoping that the headrest atlas is making for the embody will help with that. Other than that I do a shoulder exercise just squeezing my back blades together and raising my arms. Before I was getting really bad back pain.
Finally Decided to upgrade my “leather” gaming chair.. after trying a few higher end chairs I went for the Fern with mesh back cause the weather is getting warmer these days. the things I like most is the comfort, breathability, the higher back rest, sliding the seat forward makes it even more breathable because of that gap, the adjustability of that 4D arm rest and the forward tilt is more useful than I expected I do wish it could recline more like a secretlab cause now I have to slouch to achieve the same recline
Dan my friend, you So STOMP ALL OVER those BOTD clowns that I can’t verbalize it. While they only issue snyde negative judgements, you provide truly useful comparative information. They run a chair insulting business. You inform chair users regardless of business. Thank you! And F them. You’re the King!
I was tossing up between the Fern and the Aeron but due to the breathability of the Aeron, it won out for my situation. I really love the idea of the fern, but having a foam seat just isn't suitable for me and with a 'no returns' policy in Australia for both company's local dealers, I just had to go with the one that would most likely be the best result for me.
I've been using the posture fit remastered for a year now and it is perfect. Mesh in a hot climate is dope. If you are 6'+ make sure you get a size C. Also, I've learned with a tall foot rest, the Aeron lean back slouch is sweet. Best chair for tasking around the office! I also really like the forward tilt for seated VR. I think HM should make a VR version that goes around 6" taller and it would be the perfect seat /standing chair for long VR sessions.
Both are certainly at the top of all the best ergonomic chairs. However I ordered an Aeron a few weeks ago which was comfortable but unfortunately I had knee pain and there were two visual imperfections and a large scratch. I then sent it back and ordered an Aeron from another shop in black and aluminum which was 500€ more expensive. Finally it came in the original Herman Miller box. Now no knee pain and no back pain anyway. Love this chair. I just want to say that the chairs from the factory may not all be the same. My first order was 200€ under the market price, it was 1200€ for a fully loaded and I think even it was sold as new, something was not right with it.
@@8motozero8 Yeah the full mesh was a must for me, Australian based with no air conditioning means that in summer it can be really uncomfortable to work for long hours. I'm really looking forward to getting it now. Thanks for the suggestion with the footrest, I'll test out the tilt and everything and get onto finding the right fit for me.
@@yxhidpro7994 It almost sounds like you got a B-Stock chair, something that was new but not quite right. I'm glad the new one is perfect for you. Mine should be arriving this week so I'll be sure to do a full check over it, thanks for the heads up.
@@jamographer I fully agree, it was a B-stock chair, although sold as new by the shop. There was also another defect, one of the armrests moved much more easily than the other. I didn't pay attention that the chair should come in the original Herman Miller box, just realized it at the second delivery. So maybe this can help someone!
Had aeron due to 7 disc hernias. 3 sugeries. When Embody came swapped, I'm now on my third. Most amazing sitting machine in existence. I can work flat out for 10 hours. Any other chair and the pain is excruciating after 30 mins. Amazing.!!! Every employer who gets their staff an Embody will many double their investment due to less sick leave and more efficiency. Read the white paper.. pulse down, brain blood oxygenation up, muscle blood oxygenation up... what an invention. And headrests destroy your neck and shoulders.
I get coccyx pain sitting on embody 😝. The arm rest is very poorly made and it would be quite a annoyance if you have ULD. Otherwise the chair is a decent purchase.
BTOD also did another review of the Fern, but this time without the headrest, lumbar support and with the digital knit configuration. According to them, it's their top chair recommendation now and it's managed to dethrone the Leap v2. I really wanted to try the Fern in the UK, but they don't have any variety and they don't seem to care about it.
I had the same problem with the Steelcage chairs. I can get them here, but the warranty goes from 12y in the US to 5 in the UK, which is disgraceful when you're spending over a grand on an office chair.
I received my regular Embody a couple weeks ago (it took 7 months after purchase for it to arrrive since I'm in the UK). I tried the Logitech Embody's before but I couldn't deal with the noise from the foam in the backrest. The regular one on the other hand has been perfect, backrest hugs my back better and its far quieter than the Logitech Embody. (they're both comfy chairs but noise level was important to me)
A great review!! I got both Fern and with the headrest version as a wedding gift and still using after a year. Embody seem to be bulkier below the seat area and the arms spread out design makes it seem awkward. Personally, i prefer the Fern and it seem much elegant in terms of appearance. Also seat collect dust easily and fern is much easier to clean in my opinion, Embody got too many gaps and it will be tedious
@@somerandomperson8282 i tried both of them actually, it is very common to have them tested out on spot since im also working in the similar work field. Embody is actually much comfortable to our backs however i value Fern due to its unique style and easy upkeep (I clean the chair once in every month) Again is personal preferences ya~~
I've had the Embody for about 4 years now and I've always thought it a bit weird. The lower lumbar bulge is not cushion enough and feels too low, so it hurts my lower back. The arm rests are bad, as they are not adjustable enough. I'm at the point where 4 years in, I'm watching this video to see what could be better, and I think I might have to buy the Fern.
Would you recommend the Haworth Fern Chair in leather verses the fabric seat. I would prefer if they made the seat in leather and the back in back in mesh.
Went into Herman Miller showroom and tried the Aeron and Embody out, thinking I was going to get the Embody because people kept saying it had a high back. Yeah, if you’re short. I’m 6’4” and it was hitting the mid part of my shoulder blades. The Aeron size c was perfect. Would love to get the Embody but the one size “fits all” approach with that chair simply doesn’t work.
WOAH woah we don’t use the S word here. We use the word “lower center of gravity people” I’m glad you found the chair you love. I think above a certain height, the atlas headrest helps a lot! Also, check out my video on the Aeron headrest if you ever feel like you want a headrest. #2 headrest in the world, right behind the embodys headrest
Holllly crap, I learned something today. Had my embody chair for 5 years now and never knew you were suppose to sit with your butt touching the very back of it, what a game changer! Thank you!
From Haworth Fern website: Extended product use for more than eight (8) hours a day, five (5) days a week will reduce the warranty period proportionally.
That’s for EU Haworth special products from what I can see, and those only have a 1 year warranty. Also, how will Haworth know…? Lol sometimes, you gotta use your brain!
@@Ahnestly I read that as not designed to be sat in more than 40 hours a week, which makes me question the longevity of the product. Awesome set of video's by the way. Got an aff link for Herman Miller Gaming UK in case I decide to pull the trigger?

I just used your link to purchase a regular Emobdy. Glad it was during their 15% sale. I can't wait for it to come to enjoy it. I hope the Atlas headrest will be done soon. Is there anyway I can tell it helped you after clicking on your link to purchase the chair?
You are the freaking best!! Would you be able to email me your order number at ahntouragemedia@gmail.com? Thank you!! Also, video update on headrest coming tomorrow!
I wouldn't really call Embody a "king of chairs". When i was testing it at a retailer both me a 3 of my friends found it pretty average, and that opinion also had the seller. What we did found incredibly comfy was Aeron size C, and it's also what i ended up buying. I upgraded it with Atlas headrest and in total the price was less than Embody.
Hey! Different strokes for different folks! The Aeron was the first chair that solved back pain for me, so it always holds a special place....but after seeing I could sit flexibly without hurting on these other chairs, I had to say goodbye (although I miss the insane breathability!!!)
Funny that my local Herman Miller retailer emphasized how Embody is on another level ergonomically compared with Aeron, and I absolutely agree. Might be due to different body sizes. My back didn't feel comfortable in neither Size A nor Size B Aeron.
one thing i haven’t heard from any reviewer, is the availability of spare parts for the Herman Miller chairs vs. other brands. You can find replacement fabric online, arm rest parts and other pieces. It’s difficult to find parts for the Fern from my research.
You should do an ikea Markus review for those on a budget since it’s one of the most purchased chairs in the $200-300 range. But great video. I think if I had the choice between the two I’d get the Fern because I love the look of the chair.
Thank you so much for your videos it is so hard to decide on a chair and hm doesn't make it easy, they provide limited information on their site for direct comparisons. Your white chair in the back is beautiful. Is it comfortable? Where is it from?
The pricing on these are all over the place. With the current pricing for my region the Fern is a no brainer. Fern is a 1000 on sale (normal price 1200) and the Embody is 1700 on sale (normal price around 2000). So either Fern for a 1000 or Zody for 840. Or maybe the Mirra 2 for 1300.
Usually buying from local retailers will be cheaper than buying from the official store. A lot of options in Germany. They may also have more generous policies.
I tried an Embody at the store today, it had forward tilt, is this a new option they added? I'm trying to buy a used one so not sure if the old ones won't have it. The salesperson said the regular embody's all have the thicker foam from the gaming chair version now too, but I can't seem to find any info about an official "version" update.
Woah ok, can you email me? Ahntouragemedia@gmail.com I would LOVE to know more about this. Someone else commented the embody was being remastered, so wondering if this is being confirmed right now!
I’m torn between these two. Herman miller has a 20% sale at the moment so the gaming embody is around the price of a fern. I am 5’8” and 175 pounds. I would mostly use it for lounging, reclined gaming with my feet on a footstool, but also some desk work. Any tips on which one to go with?
I do all those things in my Embody and in my Fern haha. I know that doesn't make it easy, but the Embody is my #1 pick (gaming embody). Make sure you get a headrest from Atlas Headrest as well to complete the chair! If you decide to pick up the chair, please consider using my links! Helps the channel a LOT! Let me know what you decide on!!
How well do the armrests hold up to wear and tear? I have a secretlab chair, and the armrests have had to be replaced twice because the material started cracking
I sat in the Fern and the Embody. I didn't like how far back the ferns arm rest sat on my arms, even with them extended they felt too far back and close to my elbow. I went with the embody, after seeing how crappy the seat foam was on the Gesture my third option.
@@GSP2100 ive never had a chair with the front tilt. I ended up keeping my embody. Herman Miller imo had the best bang for your buck at that price range considering the unique seat and backrest design. I sat in the Fern and didnt feel like the quality was worth the price compared to what you get with the embody. Also heard that the price of the Fern used to be alot less. Embody also has a headrest avail for preorder through atlas that will imo make it the ultimate chair.
I'm debating between these two chairs. I sat in both at showrooms but it's just so hard to tell how much I like them with just sitting in them for 15 minutes. I'd need to buy one to really sit in it for hours. The big downside for the embody is the price tag. I preferred the gaming version and with tax, it's over $2,100 now. I may get the Fern just out of cost comparison alone.
You can get the fern on sale closer to 1000 dollars even with the digital knit fabric. I just got one and it's amazing. I've never sat in an embody, but I can't imagine it being worth almost a thousand dollars more than a fern. I could be wrong though.
I need to make a video on this soon! Video linked! Discount code is also found in the description if you decide to pick up! ua-cam.com/video/O9ZyyW9WmBU/v-deo.html
Darn, I still cannot make a decision on what chair to get, I am a 5'7 and have a muscular build at 95kg. I don't really have a budget as I do have to be at my computer all day. What would you suggest if you don't mind me asking.
Something important that doesn't seem to be mentioned a lot: the Embody is curved forward quite a bit towards the top. I recently got mine and was extremely disappointed by how much it forces me into a slumped posture. If I sit upright with good posture, basically all I feel of the backrest is the plastic frame at the top which sits below my shoulders. Relaxing into the backrest, I slouch in my lumbar and thoracic and let my shoulders drop forward. While it is of really good quality and I love how flexible the backrest is side to side, I do not understand in the least how this hasn't been mentioned by reviews more - I must've watched 10 or more. It might be less pronounced if you're shorter (I'm around 6'2) but I do not understand at all why it curves inwards in the horizontal plane. NOT an ergonomic chair.
From what I found easing the knob on the back let me lean back in a more lounge position, and tightening it kinda forced that forward posture position gradually. If you've tried that then yea maybe just your height, I'm 5'11 220 lb and it doesn't make me slump at all
Appreciate the video. The more I learn about these high end chairs I think they’re not worth it for me. I bought a gesture but it was not comfy at all. I could feel the seat pan through the foam and it actually hurt my back. I never have back pain. The arms were really nice tho. I’m 6’3 220lbs. Really enjoy sitting cross legged. I don’t need ergonomics, I need room and adjustability.
I couldn't stand the humanscale. Caused SOOOO much backache for me. Casteel, I would HIGHLY recommend you check out the Embody. Remember, you can always return it very easily (assuming you're in the USA). If you decide to check it out, please consider using my link!
Similar here. 6'2 and I change positions like every hour. I'm gonna try picking up a Titan Evo XL. It looks a lot more flexible than these more expensive chairs. And it's actually made for tall people.
I made a couple sizing guides to help with that! Please consider using my links if you decide to pick one up! ua-cam.com/video/meDhajzejwM/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/Yr0b2UBudLc/v-deo.html
Not sure if it helps, I'm 6'3" and 102kg, I've been having back pain since the pandemic. Finally bought the Herman Miller Embody, its probably my best ever decision. I use it all day since last 8 weeks, every day. Worked for me, and how!!
I was really torn for awhile... I bought the Gaming Embody (through your affiliate link btw), new, on sale, AND interest free payments. Three main things totalled together controlling the decision, 1. Made in America, 2. Unbeatable warranty, 3. A head rest IS coming and I am on the waiting list!!! Both are good chairs and better contest would be the Gesture with a headrest...
Hmmm... the Embody's 'cushion on a rubber band' (as you described it) sounds interesting. Is it actually comfortable for all day sitting, 5-7 days/week? I used to love my old Aeron for a while, but then I found that the mesh seat was too uncomfortable for long sits due to lack of cushioning. Awesome for the booty juice factor, though, of course! 😆
@@Ahnestly Isn't the Aeron's mesh not supposed to sag like other low quality mesh chairs? I know every single chair seat has a break in period, regardless of the material used, but I've never heard anyone describe the Aeron's mesh as "saggy".
It's pretty hard, I've been trying to get my thighs used to the embody for a year now. But I can't, this chair makes me want to get away from the computer all the time, productivity have just tanked since I got this chair. I'm going back to cheap Ikea Marcus, now there is cushion.
It’s different for everyone, The Embody hurts my thighs after an hour. Tried it for 2 weeks straight. The fern is great for me because it has actual cushion, too bad it’s a hotter material. Fern > Embody.
I have a Leap V2 that I hate and been thinking of trying the Fern. I just tried your sittin gmethod (all the way back and down) and holy crap, that makes a HUGE difference. I still don't like this chair but that eliminated a lot of the back pain I was having.
yeah you have to really tuck in your back there. A lot of folks don't go far back enough, leaving a gap. the leap v2 will esp punish it bc of the way the backrest and seat works. I know the Leap is a beloved chair, which is why it's on my top chairs list, but for me personally, I think there are better chairs for the price! The Fern is well loved by people who don't like the Embody's lumbar!
Another great review. Didn't I pick up from another video you live in Northern VA? Do you know anywhere to try these out? You should review the Glerups. They're a key part of my WFH experience.
I was in NOVA, but moved to PA to be closer to wife's family. Dude. Glerups are the TRUTHHHHH. I bought them last winter. INCREDIBLY warm. Then the summer hit. Not a single sweaty foot day. Amazing.
i've had the fern for the last year or so and I honestly do not like it. The lumbar has caused a lot of backpain for me and i think the seat pan is not large enough. Overall, i just dont feel like the fern fits my build. i'm 6 foot 2 inches and 180 pounds. do you think i would prefer the gaming embody with the atlas headrest? that's what i've been looking at.
Yes. The embody seat pan is huge, but lumbar will be a toss up for you. Not as aggressive, but you can’t adjust it either and some people say it’s annoying. I love it and have no issues…but want to be Ahnest with my assessment. Hope this helps and let me know what you decide on. Please consider using my links if you pick up - really helps the channel!
@@Ahnestly Thanks for this! Super helpful. Im going to a HM store to have a fitting. Will def try before i buy this time. I regret not doing that with my Fern. If i go with something I will def use ur links!
@ hey! I’m on mobile so hard to navigate, but if you click this video’s description, you should see links there to Herman miller! Please use those links. I really really appreciate it!!!
which chair of these two or any of them that create the best posture? I have nerve pain from hunching my upper back. I'm wanting something that really helps me promote better posture without me constantly having to resituate myself to make the posture better.
I've tried the fully loaded Fern and the Gaming Embody. In my opinion the Gaming Embody is not breathable at all! At about 28℃ in my home office I was melting and swimming in my booty juices, but the cracking noises at every movement was a deal breaker for e at that price point... Same goes for the Fern, but not as much on the back rest. The Fern back rest looks breathable and it is, but it depends on the material you have chosen. That mesh looking material is pretty thick and a sort of polyester which traps heat pretty much and the part where the lumbar sits is not breathable at all due to the rubber material. After testing 8 chairs, I've ended up with the Aeron in size C at 178cm and 80kg. The B size was to small in my opinion and has put a lot of pressure all around my booty and my legs, due to the sort of bucket seat design. The C size is perfect. Also have bought an Atlas Headrest with Dan's discount code :)
Being a misophonia guy and having tested out the Herman Miller Embody, I can say that its noises don't bother me at all. I don't even really notice them, compare to other chairs. So whoever out there also suffers from misophonia, you could be fine with the embody. Being big and heavy though, I am not doing well with the chair overall. The armrests are barely wide enough and are too far back for my taste. I also dearly miss a headrest and the back is almost too short. I tested the Aeron against it and I really love the mesh on it and prefer it to the Embody rubber, but even in size C the Aeron limits my movement way too much and presses my legs together. Feels like I'm doomed, chair wise.
I'm really sorry to hear that, but wanted to say that Atlas Headrest is made by a retired Herman Miller employee and sells Embody & Aeron headrests. I think this creator has a link in the description here. I hope you find something that works for you soon!!
@@blissieee Thank you for the advice. I know about the headrests, however the Embody is already out of the race for me. The Aeron would be good, but for me the remaining issue is with the narrow-ish sitting surface, which presses my legs together. Unfortunately I already went through more chairs in my search and there are models that have a wider mesh sitting surface, but their mesh isn't nearly as comfortable as the Aeron's.
The Fern? I tried it and after 2 weeks I just couldn't settle into it. I have frequent back pains and it was very uncomfortable to sit in. I'm surprised it's competing with the embody. I'm waiting for a Leap 2 from Crandall. Hopefully that works.
Very interesting...the Leap v2 was whatever to me (although I LOVE the remfr one from Crandall), but heat build up was significant (was using an Aeron at the time)
I work from home and am in a chair lot. Kind of a weak back from a sports injury years ago. Besides just normal work. For my trading I do lean forward from time to time, but also like to lean back and chill. Looking at both these chairs "well gaming version for embody" as well as steelcase leap or gesture. What do you think Ahnestly for a 5ft-8in 170 lb guy with those requirements?
You are the perfect fit for all these chairs. I personally found the leap v2 to be the worst for my lower back pain. The gesture felt like it didn’t fit as well (some guys shorter than me said it worked for them…just not as good for me). I am a embody #1 fan and fern very close #2. The tilt forward isn’t great in the Fern, but you still get the option!

I was a little confused why you changed shirts every time you changed which chair you were sitting in.
Haworth very is my favorite chair
Thanks for the feedback!!

I've got both on their way right now, I can't wait to try them and find out which one I prefer. So grateful for channels like yours existing.
Currently bought the gaming embody, it was my first actual chair so I took me a while to get used to. I ordered the fern a couple days ago also waiting for that chair to try out! Bought my Embody 10+ years ago - still love it.
I regret buying the aeron. Embody wasn't on display. It's the best chair I've ever sat on.
I think for even 1300$ you shouldnt have those kind of issues its absurd
@@Areyouduckingserious you are absolutely right but when you can easily fix it then I don't care since any warranty hassle would take longer and wouldn't be fixed anyway because it's design flaw.

These chairs are huge expenses and your reviews are extremely informative and seem honest. Thank you.
Glad you like them! And hope they help you!
Been using an embody for over 10 years. It's held up amazingly and is still just as comfortable
Could you manage in some way this lumbar pain people say it makes? I have doubts because of this... thanks

Just got my Fern digital knit with all the bells and whistles a few days ago. Absolutely love it so far!
Me, too! my back pain went away in under a week.
Ok....so this is TMI...but I have a nub where my tailbone is....and I have experienced 0 tail bone pain. That's really unfortunate it didn't work out!
Overall, the sensation when first sitting down is great, until that small pressure point starts to kill you
@@tswdev totally agree.

Really appreciate the kind words and support! Let me know how you love it (and please tell them to use my links if I helped them out 😀)
@@Ahnestly definitely did when I bought mine! 💪
How did you destroy your back if you're fit?
@KristianMFN can't tell if serious.
Do you know what arthritis and a bulging disk are?
@@TheTommyOhh Yes. Arthritis can be related to autoimmune issues or wear due to improper form while exercising over extended periods of time or very underdeveloped muscles for the load etc. Bulging disk is when the capsule that houses the cartilladge between vertebrae breaks down or gets disrupted in a way that leads to it slipping.
So if you're comfortable sharing, may i ask how you managed to do this? Especially considering that you are "athletic"? I find it to be a very scary condition so id be interested to hear what happened.
Sports and lifting heavy things. As you indicated, that is how it normally occurs.
I'm 6'0" and it's somewhat annoying that it's like that
Which one do you like the most?
where does he show how to sit upright? Watched the video but I may have missed it. I have the Embody and it doesn't seem to do a good job supporting you when you sit upright so I'm on the fence on returning it.
@@nothinleader 8:25. Just tighten it up and it adjusts the back forward.
"How else are you supposed to try them?"
If you are situated in NA, there are Haworth and Herman Miller showrooms, in Canada for example there are a couple in Toronto, as well as their resellers offering showings.
Loving your family dynamics! She built you 2 PCs! And she got a sick gift!! Awesome stuff
Which one do you like more?
I really have a bad time on my Embody. Have it since 1 year and cannot say I'm confortable on it. I have pain on my coccyx after a couple of hours sitting on it, and my back also hurts in a specific way: If you draw a vertical line on the middle of the back rest, the zone of this line is very hard on the bottom half part, no "cushion feel " and it exactly on this zone that my spine bones are. Result is that I have a lot of pain on my spine and some time I have to move forward to detach my back from the seat.
Sitting in my Embody right now. Great for slouching. Can't wait for the headrest.
Thanks for your reviews dude, i was able to make an informed choice, and after testing the embody, bought one and dont regret it.
I've owned both briefly. Instead of the air bubble lumbar support on the Fern, I made a lumbar pillow using millet hulls and stuffed it in the opening. It feels pretty amazing for me because the hulls conform to your body but still feels sturdy and supportive.
Brilliant! Would love to see a picture if you can at ahntouragemedia@gmail.com

Woahhh what?? Thank you!!!!
I have the Fern, my partner has the Embody. She loves her chair and I love mine, but we both somewhat dislike each other's chairs! The seatpan differences are exactly why for the both of us.
I have the embody but I'm an ergonomic rebel, do you think the fern would be better for leg crossing?
@@argotheinformant most definitely!
@@svanir7619 cool, thanks!
I've searched and tried hundreds of chairs literally for years to find the perfect chair. Finally settled on antique chair.
Big thanks to you, Ahnestly! And awesome reviews! Got the embody at the end after watch your video. And it's so good!
The great thing about the Embody is how bouncy and how light it feels, but gives an unwelcome pressure on my thighs and tail bone.
there is definitely something wrong with how you sit if there is pressure on your tailbone.
@@RetroTeddyBear I have the same issue with the Embody...tried all kinds of sitting positions and it still beats up my tailbone
weird I had the exact opposite found the fern hard and unforgiving but the embody the most comfy seat ive sat in.
If you are a bigger person. like 6-2 and above and a bit larger in size. you will feel the edges of the embody on the top of the back rest. i like the chair very much, but this was a dealbreaker for me.
wait til the headrest comes out! Should resolve that issue!!
@@Ahnestly probably, yes. But i think my back cannot wait. My old home office chair is giving up on me, had to fix it with tape...
I have the embody... I also have just about every chair you can think of except the Fern. Can't wait to try one out!
what’s your favorite?
Finally Decided to upgrade my “leather” gaming chair.. after trying a few higher end chairs I went for the Fern with mesh back cause the weather is getting warmer these days.
the things I like most is the comfort, breathability, the higher back rest, sliding the seat forward makes it even more breathable because of that gap, the adjustability of that 4D arm rest and the forward tilt is more useful than I expected
I do wish it could recline more like a secretlab cause now I have to slouch to achieve the same recline
jusr bought fern for 760 dollah. not quite in same category as embody that is 1300 even during bf...
Where did you get the Fern for that low of a price??

Nice!!! I hope you consider using my links as it helps my channel a LOT!!!
@YeMa020 chat did you choose ? :)
@dragonsan7577 sounds like you should extend the seat length to distribute more weight on the back of thighs...
@@buddyschreizerden3611 I will try that, thanks.
@@andrewtwigger3533 Same story for germany. I think it is a europe thing, no idea why.
You really like the Fern with digital knit. Dont you? :)
Apparently, the seat depth lever on the Fern breaks a lot and some people have complained that it was broken upon arrival. The cable pops out.
LOL I read it as the "Herman Miller Errbody" ERRBODY GON LUV DIS
LOL that would be hilarious
7:15 yes the ones on fern absolutely get wobbly and it might be a concern for some, because it gets worse over time
I received my regular Embody a couple weeks ago (it took 7 months after purchase for it to arrrive since I'm in the UK). I tried the Logitech Embody's before but I couldn't deal with the noise from the foam in the backrest. The regular one on the other hand has been perfect, backrest hugs my back better and its far quieter than the Logitech Embody. (they're both comfy chairs but noise level was important to me)
Logitech? What are you smoking?
Logitech and Herman miller collaborated on a embody chair together lol

A great review!! I got both Fern and with the headrest version as a wedding gift and still using after a year. Embody seem to be bulkier below the seat area and the arms spread out design makes it seem awkward.
Personally, i prefer the Fern and it seem much elegant in terms of appearance.
Also seat collect dust easily and fern is much easier to clean in my opinion, Embody got too many gaps and it will be tedious
I assume by your choice of wording "seems" that you have not tried the Embody to know which you actually prefer sitting in?
@@somerandomperson8282 i tried both of them actually, it is very common to have them tested out on spot since im also working in the similar work field. Embody is actually much comfortable to our backs however i value Fern due to its unique style and easy upkeep (I clean the chair once in every month)
Again is personal preferences ya~~
We use the word “lower center of gravity people”
I’m glad you found the chair you love. I think above a certain height, the atlas headrest helps a lot! Also, check out my video on the Aeron headrest if you ever feel like you want a headrest. #2 headrest in the world, right behind the embodys headrest
@Ahnestly yeah, didn't try the embody with a headrest. Wasn't out yet.
hmm...wondering if arm rest not being very adjustable is important.
Holllly crap, I learned something today. Had my embody chair for 5 years now and never knew you were suppose to sit with your butt touching the very back of it, what a game changer! Thank you!
lolll i can't tell if this is sarcasm, or a legit comment! In either case, I laughed!
Its legit, im dumb
From Haworth Fern website: Extended product use for more than eight (8) hours a day, five (5) days a week will reduce the warranty period proportionally.
That’s for EU Haworth special products from what I can see, and those only have a 1 year warranty. Also, how will Haworth know…? Lol sometimes, you gotta use your brain!
@@Ahnestly I read that as not designed to be sat in more than 40 hours a week, which makes me question the longevity of the product.

@@JXSMS there's also a size C Aeron
one thing i haven’t heard from any reviewer, is the availability of spare parts for the Herman Miller chairs vs. other brands. You can find replacement fabric online, arm rest parts and other pieces. It’s difficult to find parts for the Fern from my research.
Great point!!! That def becomes an issue 12 years down the line or if you’re buying used! But new, you have peace of mine for 12 years!
Any idea how the used parts market for Steelcase compares to HM?
You should do an ikea Markus review for those on a budget since it’s one of the most purchased chairs in the $200-300 range. But great video. I think if I had the choice between the two I’d get the Fern because I love the look of the chair.
that range explodes if you have to have it shipped.
Thank you so much for your videos it is so hard to decide on a chair and hm doesn't make it easy, they provide limited information on their site for direct comparisons. Your white chair in the back is beautiful. Is it comfortable? Where is it from?
can u please let me know what is the red chair's type/brand? Thank you
The pricing on these are all over the place. With the current pricing for my region the Fern is a no brainer. Fern is a 1000 on sale (normal price 1200) and the Embody is 1700 on sale (normal price around 2000). So either Fern for a 1000 or Zody for 840. Or maybe the Mirra 2 for 1300.
Just FYI: Both companies have a restocking fee in Europe. So keep that in mind when thinking about buying them to try them out.
Ahntouragemedia@gmail.com
I would LOVE to know more about this. Someone else commented the embody was being remastered, so wondering if this is being confirmed right now!

I don’t need ergonomics, I need room and adjustability.
look at human scale freedom, I'm 6'4 and 100kg and wide and trust me its great. Search it up. I got mine refurbished for £230

Hmmm... the Embody's 'cushion on a rubber band' (as you described it) sounds interesting. Is it actually comfortable for all day sitting, 5-7 days/week?
Amazing.
Nice to get a review from a fellow short person. Wasnt sure if the Embody would only feel right for normal sized people
i've had the fern for the last year or so and I honestly do not like it.
@@jossipierce Thank you for your willingness to support the channel!!! Let me know how it goes!
@@Ahnestly can you send me the HM link to help you out?
@ hey! I’m on mobile so hard to navigate, but if you click this video’s description, you should see links there to Herman miller! Please use those links. I really really appreciate it!!!
What arms are those that you have on your digital knit Fern in your office?
which chair of these two or any of them that create the best posture? I have nerve pain from hunching my upper back. I'm wanting something that really helps me promote better posture without me constantly having to resituate myself to make the posture better.
What monitor are you using at your desk?
Great video man 🙏 btw what foot rest you are using @ 02:44 ?
I can't remember...lol. Check out my footrest video here - it's in there ua-cam.com/video/aF01U4_gzZ0/v-deo.html
The Fern? I tried it and after 2 weeks I just couldn't settle into it. I have frequent back pains and it was very uncomfortable to sit in. I'm surprised it's competing with the embody.
I'm waiting for a Leap 2 from Crandall. Hopefully that works.
Very interesting...the Leap v2 was whatever to me (although I LOVE the remfr one from Crandall), but heat build up was significant (was using an Aeron at the time)
Should have tried the Digital Knit configuration for the Fern.
@Brandon D btfd
Siting on the fern and watching this, really good chair. In Serbia much cheeper than Embody.
I got the Embody and I'm loving it so far. Best upgrade from my last Homall gaming chair
