Funny, I'm working on this exact thing for my blog (snakeshooter). I compare various commercially available flash modifiers that are useful in the field; as opposed to say using an umbrella or something similar. Functionality, portability, backpackablity, and how much of an improvement over bare flash they provide are my points. Like your channel and your Instagram feed.

When you use the pop up flash to trigger another flash in slave mode you can configure the camera to not fire the pop up flash only the remote flash.

This is really informative. The only issue I have with 3rd party flash like Godox or any other cheap flashes is that at times they can be very flimsy. When i took Godox to Costa Rica, it could not stick firmly on top of my Sony A9 ii and fell off to the ground. I would probably go for branded one (I know they are pricey but sturdy in the field)

I use a ring flash that attaches to the front of my lens and I get some harsh lighting. I will look to invest in an external to help soften that light. Thanks again man!

Very informative video, thank you for sharing it. I did use the slave mode last time in Ecuador (that was my first herping trip) and I have mix feelings about it. My main problem was that I used a very cheap flash and when I released the shutter it only triggered the flash and took the picture 1 second later. And that 1 extra second can kill your shot in macro easily. 😅😃

Thanks for the comment! Yeah, I much prefer shooting with a trigger and receiver for off camera flash

I need some help, recently doing night time snake photography and if the snake is outside of 1-2M it's too far away for my flash to light it. I'm using a (pope) diffuser with the meiki-320 (so many issues with this one) but I'm wondering if i need a more powerful flash or i need some external light? Thanks.

@@wakefieldwildlife how close are you able to get with this lens? Am tossing up between this and a 16-35mm wide angle

    • @wakefieldwildlife

I can get a mere inches away. But there's quite a bit of distortion with a fish eye as well, so it depends on whether you like that or not
