what happens if you put it in oil or other liquids?
Kuzo 262 the response water can't wet it is because it's coated in a non polar substance when water is very polar. Polar and non polar liquids can't be mixed easily and if they are mixed they'll separate eventually. Oil is non polar like the coating so it will probably effect the sand a lot more than water. That's also why people use oil to put a finish on wood, to protect it from water damage

This was interesting. I did not expect the bubbling, but in retrospect, it's really obvious: with the external pressure dropping, the air trapped between the sand grains expands, and it bubbles up to the surface.
And since magic sand works due to surface tension (via the capillary effect) all you need is some extra force (pressure) to overcome it. Here you used a vacuum chamber, but simply dropping the sand into a deeper pool of water should also work.

Wow, i was not predicting that when the pressure was allowed to return, that would be when the sand would get "wet". I guess it makes sense. During the vacuum process, a lot of the air around the sand and in the water was removed. When the pressure was allowed to return, the remaining air around the sand was diffused into the water and thereby reducing the sand's hydrophobic properties. Neat....and very neat to see! Thank you for that!
