      Hi! Thanks for this! Recently rescued a Saddlebred mare from a killpen and didn't realize she was pregnant. I hadn't had a mare foal in about 10 years so I'm refreshing those hints from your video. Vet said she's aboutv4 weeks out. No milk in sacs yet. How much do you feed your mare daily? We've got her on a bail of alfalfa and mare n foal feed. Thanks for ur input.

    Thank you for this. My mare is due her first foal in late June and it's my first time breeding. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed but I'm trying to learn as much as I can so I really appreciate you taking the time to make these types of videos.

      @@BasicHorseTraining Little Filly was born yesterday morning! Gave us some scare by colic'ing 9 hours later and it was touch and go but thank goodness she's back to normal now and has been given the all clear by the vet.

    Hey! Thank you for the video, but considering this is a professional educational video, it is more appropriate to show all the signs than to censor because it may seem impolite. I have a mare that is pregnant and I came to this video to see the changes in the vulva and compare as she is a maiden and other signs are subtle right now.
    It’s not inappropriate- it’s science! Thanks again

    I noticed you have straw all around her, is that where she foaled? My horse has a nice size shelter but i know she wont use it to foal, should i lay a bunch of straw or local hay around where she likes to hang out outside or is she fine having the foal just on the regular ground ?

    • @BasicHorseTraining
      @BasicHorseTraining  Рік тому

      I added the straw here as it was quite muddy and I didn't want Kiz to have the foal in the wet and cold mud. Most horses will be fine foaling on the ground. God luck with your foal. Come back and tell me whet you have

      When those signs are there you need to keep a close eye on her. The only way to be 99.999% sure is to do some pH testing of her milk.

      @@BasicHorseTraining She had a stunning and huge colt foal last night. I was so fortunate, just as I went to check on her last thing before bed her waters were breaking so I got to be there for the whole wonderful thing. He was so big I was a bit worried that she would'nt be able to get him out but it all went well and he is so beautiful. A sort of silvery black smoky colour with a star a snip and 3 white socks. Hey, my mare was due 3 days ago. She has a lot of milk but isn’t bagging up. And she is showing all the other signs that she is really to foal. So why isn’t she bagging up?

      Ok you will need to be careful as she will be losing her colostrum and the foal needs that. If I were you I would get a vet to look at her and you will probably need to organise colostrum for the foal. They need it in the first few hours after birth and if the don’t get it they can end up gravely ill. Sorry ☹️

    So basically horses signs of close having a baby, is kinda different than we do with cows. Most generally we were always taught "look at the cow's bag/tits, and look at her virgina and their belly size". And if she was ganna calf matter of hours, she'll be walking around leaving her tail out/ waging it while she stands if theirs no flies/ be more by herself. But i have noticed that not all do that, i seen some literally wag her tail all year round to use their tail to itch their butt cheeks..lol, and seen some cow's calf next to others, and seen cows smell the ground all year round also before they lay down. May not know much about horses but i just wanted to learn something about them/ i like horses inerways ever since as a kid, wish we had horses at our fram but no place for them ain't big enough. Inerways thanks for sharing! p,s she's cute by the way 😍.

      Thank Randy , I know nothing about cows so you have helped me too 😆
