I like Hindemith but I didn't know this work and what a jolly piece it is! Abbado was one of those conductors whom I intrinsically trusted (not always a good thing, I know) and his exploratory nature seemed to lead him down some unusual byeways for the times - I wonder how many other top conductors were tackling Hindemith in 1969! Anyway, I think I need to check out the availability of this - I note he has also recorded it on DG, might need to give that a listen too. Another fine upload, sir!
A marvelous recording!!! I have this on open reel, and it sounds fantastic. As a trombonist, I love Denis Wick at the top of the section. Such a great and distinctive player. I must confess that I prefer the Ormandy/Philadelphia on EMI, but that one just doesn't have the Decca sonics!
Ah, the Decca sonics! Denis Wick started his own company producing brass instrument mouthpieces and related items. I found that out when writing the blog piece for a recording he conducted of Holst and Vaughan Williams wind band music (the video of which got blocked everywhere I put it 😡). The record was called "By Tram From Hammersmith" BTW - do you know it?
@@ClassicsAndVinyl Oh yes. Absolutely. I own a few Wick trombone mutes and I did try one of his mouthpieces during my colleges years. I have that band recording of the London Wind Soloists with Wick conducting Holst and Vaughan Williams, AND the later LP of Grainger, Poulenc, and Milhaud. I also have both on CD.
Such a Great Composition Wonderful

It's a great piece isn't it? The title makes it sound a more serious work than it really is!
