I’m absolutely love this song. Holy Christ, I miss this dude so much. A very beautiful soul.
Not sure I agree this suggests that Justin has ‘such disdain for his Dad’. He’s relating to his Dad, not dismissing him. He’s admitting his faults are the same as Steve’s. It’s more a tribute to his Mum’s moral core and her role in shaping him. Steve was apparently backstage when he first heard this song and said to Justin, ‘great song’, so I don’t think Steve took it that way either. He no doubt also appreciated that Justin wrote a song that is every bit as good as Steve or Townes’ work. Either way, It’s an astonishing song from a huge talent gone too soon.
God I love his music and this song for sure. Hard growing up with a rock dad gone all the time. RIP sweet Justin. 😢
RIP Justin Townes Earle. So much more we could have heard from him.
No doubt.
He reaches out and grabs our souls while he’s simply trying to reach in and grab his own while there’s still time. The lines about his father reflect the harsh honesty that comes when a sudden sharp shard of light opens our understanding to something we maybe didn’t really want to know. His decision to share that knowledge is powerful; it takes a lot of strength to admit to seeing something we really don’t want to see. Seeing his Mama’s eyes in his own he’s telling himself (and us) that despite the darkness he’s still “there”, still knowing “right from wrong”, yet that knowledge is obviously overshadowed by a terrible dark foreboding on his soul. Clearly written at a crossroads in his life, when the light could still be seen.
The first time I saw Justain live was August 2009, when he opened for Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, and Old Crow Medicine Show. As much as I loved Roots, Americana, etc., I hadn't heard much of him 'til then. I went to the concert for the middle act, but came away realizing Justin stole the show, alone, with his guitar. And I saw him live every chance I got.
Great music paints a vision, tells a story, and refrains from repeating the same message over and over. It's very difficult to consistently write great music song after song, and very few artists possess the skill. Justin was easily the greatest master of his generation.
This is the spot! Glad you covered this one. Next to They Killed John Henry, this is one of my favorite JTE songs. Damn shame he's gone, one of the best Americana writers of our time.
You are the way!
Lone Pine Hill is one of my favorites.
The performance he delivers at some New Jersey library is a must see! Artist with a capital ARTIST!
Lone Pine Hill is a great song of his.
He was a great song writer and sing.
I notice that his strumming pattern is similar to Mississippi Hill Country blues picking, a brush rhythm and index finger or two finger picking combination. Sometimes combined with a thumb rhythm. Look at the early RL Burnside stuff, the Kenny Brown picking particularly The Black Keys Goin Down South. All that stuff is far more right hand than left. And so it is with Justin
Justin was both behind and ahead of his time. His vibe and recordings will age beautifully, probably gain cult followings as time goes. Albeit, its his goddamn namesake.
Nicely put, Master Bastard haha. Justin was a great musician and songwriter, when I randomly put on his record Midnight At the Movies, I knew I'd be a lifelong fan and God damn, I can relate to him, and musically was up my alley.
“Sure it hurts but it should hurt sometimes “
Isbell wishes he could write that
Absolutely love Justin, if you ever decide to do another of his songs Frightened by The Sound would be an excellent choice. Keep up the great work Burt!
Thanks so much Bill!
Really like his relaxed playing style ,very bluesy sound and lyrics which just capture the moment and create pictures in your mind .Great reaction Burt
Agree I miss him dearly
Great artist, great song, great reaction video. Thanks for this Burt.
wow, i hadn't heard of him before but w o w he's amazing!! definitely adding to my playlists. i'll have to check out more of his songs.
would you consider checking out orville peck? maybe "summertime" or "no glory in the west"? he's my current favorite next to colter wall and i love his style. also canadian but more reminiscent of dolly parton. i like to say he's the lovechild of johnny cash and elvis, but that might just be me. subscribed!!!
I'd love to see you review Brown Bird, Bilgewater.
Oh dang, probably my favorite version of that song…
This kind of music doesn't sell as much as say Saylor Twift because people can't handle these emotions. They can't handle being this real.
I love the new artist or I should say new to me . I’m a new sub and keep up the good work the true music lovers will find your channel it might not be for some but the true music fans will follow it for sure
Thanks so much for subbing Ken!
The greatest of all art comes from inhumane suffering. Sad but true.
Have you listened/reacted to Lucero?
It was next on my list but we didn’t have enough time to get to it...

This channel is working it's way to becoming one of my favorites. Shoutout to Willy B :) If possible check out Ben Caplan "Down to the River" live in Bellwoods. I guarantee you'll dig it. Much love from WV ✌🏼
Can’t tell ya how much I appreciate it J!
Steve Earle is an incredible song writer and you really should look into his stuff when you get the chance. Here's one of his really early ones: ua-cam.com/video/WHE1dM4hYCw/v-deo.html. Here are a couple of others of his that will definitely make you think: ua-cam.com/video/jBtQcZx9gAo/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/DtWSTnZSGCE/v-deo.html. Justin came by his talent, as well as his weaknesses, most legitimately.
Do Josephine by Tanner Usrey
Southside of heaven by ryan Bingham 🙏🏻🙏🏻
@Tanner Usrey
man you should react to a guy by the name of Tucker Beathard his songs are amazing but you should give a listen to a song called “How Gone Will I Go” it’s an absolutely amazing song wouldn’t disappoint. When i’m gone is also a good song
Please react to Cody Johnson's "The Only One I Know"!!
Could you react to Ravens By Mount Eerie please
Steve actually went to prison for drugs I believe heroin
Again, he only kicked it when he served jail time for weapons.
Yes, Steve Earle had a heroin problem.
