    SHARE THIS VIDEO: • Don’t Put Drain Cleane...
    Drain cleaner has sodium hydroxide (NaOH) in it AKA “lye”. This is the same stuff we use to make soap with and how we got our hydrogen gas for the video where we mixed hydrogen and oxygen in the same balloon.
    When NaOH mixes with aluminum it creates hydrogen gas and sodium aluminate (this strange grey goopy aluminum looking mixture).
    If you put pure sodium hydroxide (mixed with water) in an aluminum pot the reaction is AGGRESSIVE!!! It will literally eat right through the pot itself! This is a good lesson to not use drain cleaner (NaOH) to clean kitchen ware if it has aluminum in it… otherwise you'll end up with a huge mess!
    Note: Sodium Hydroxide is SUPER caustic and dangerous. Use all safety gear when working with NaOH, and only mess around with this stuff with adult supervision.

      Soap will corrode aluminum as well because it is alkaline. Though a lot slower than caustic soda will. That is why if you have an aluminum alloy bicycle you should never wash it with soap and water. Just wash it with plain water instead. Otherwise over time the bike frame and its wheels if they are allow wheels will become corroded and ruined.

    Good experiment. Aluminium reacts with NaOH in Aqueous solution to form Sodium aluminate and water through the following reaction: 2 Al + 2 NaOH + 2 H2O → 2 NaAlO2 + 3 H2
    Keep it up, Nick :]

      In your formula adding water is not needed, you could put NaOH(aq) for aqueous. But still good job man.

    If I remember correctly, that apple slicer was cheap steel, not aluminum. I left one outside after prepping a fruit tray and it started rusting. But I'm sure you figured that one out. Great experiments, I'm subscribing.

    I always thought it would be neat to see in this sort of channel some tests on the reaction (even if i can just google and see whats going on) like when you put the aluminum tabs in the bottle you coulda done splint test because i bet it was producing hydrogen. Great video btw

    How would sodium hydroxide react with other metal that have properties that resemble with aluminium's properties? Great video btw ❤️ much love ❤️🙏🏻

    • @Rhodanide
      @Rhodanide 7 років тому +2

      Abeeha Zaidi Good question! NaOH reacts with a good few metals to make the corresponding metal-ate. Here's an example: NaOH reacts with Zinc to form Sodium Zincate and Hydrogen gas. No element will take on the properties of another without actually _being_ that element. The belief in doing so is Alchemy, which is kinda bogus.

    Aluminum cookware is just not good. Turns out titanium (coated) pots are actually aluminum, the water container of a coffee machine may be aluminum. Even without much abuse this material develops pits that soak up grease and flavors, which may not be removed. Grease just melts and falls off steel. And it stains other pots. The black residue from lye doesn't come off hands or anything white it gets onto.
    When I was a kid, I had accidentally burnt a cooking pot, and tried to clean it by boiling lye in it before it was discovered. That didn't work out so well. It stayed dirty and exposed parts became pits.
