Ok, so I don't have to do the whole shot by shot game trailer breakdown thing, but I do have to breakdown why this trailer is amazing for a completely different reason, hell yeah! This works as a fantastic comparison to the 2022 trailer, which while also taking a similar TV framing device, was much more "Videogame trailer-ey", hooking us on the world, the plot, and its characters. This direct instead takes a very different approach, going all in on the characterisation and world building, through the magnificent lens of Jangell! The opening channel surfing is a lot of fun, and quite economical. Immediately we understand the framing device, get a glimpse into many aspects which make up this familiar yet fantasy world, and hook the interest of newcomers, through the mixed media and eye-catching works. I have totally seen Dewey Proshpekt before, being in a small town which had a surprisingly active local TV and radio station, glad these kinds of guys still exist even in another solar-system. For one a fantastic name, lovely voice by JJ Kochly, and great design (Object head? Check. Suit? Check! Energetic eye catching personality? Check! I think we've got another Tumblr sexyman over here!). Though it also primes us the viewer for the different styles of art which will be used within' this, before going into another classic of Daytime Television, TALK SHOWS! It's great to finally get a full course of Jangell baybee! Enough of these short teasers, and end of game samplers, we get to all see why we the audience love this maniacal jokester (and true sexyman material). I love how much expression we are able to get from just a moveable mouth, one hand, and only 2 sets of eyes. It fits so well that he talks so much with his hands, and also works as a necessity for the medium, killing 2 birds through one clown. Also good to further push the narrative with Mother already holding an iron grip on a large amount of the solar-system, through solidifying he total media control, and giving us a first hand showing of Jangell's reason for his position. And then we get the name drop folks! Roll credits! (But also super fun to see him grind his teeth with the slow fist clench, almost breaking character). Then just short of a minute (0:57) in, we get to see the latest look at the gameplay, and man does it look sweet! I love how, for lack of a better word, early 90's Nintendo ad it is, with a character talking about how great the game is directly to the viewer in a roundabout fashion. The ship combat has been something briefly seen and discussed before, but the latest work on it has me walking on air. The framing of the fights is slick as oil, with the small animations on the side, and of course character specific colouration, all coming together in order to make a visual treat, and a fun gameplay switchup. A great touch would be that the icons for Health, Mp, and Turn timer all look much better than they did before, and way more readable, a small but very nice change for the better. (Also is it just me or does Voleric look distinctly Jangell like in ship combat. Coincidence???) (1:02 - 1:05) Another beautiful showcase of the games art direction, and again showing Verdalia in all its glory. It's clear this is a planet you've been very proud of and for good reason, it's a sweet concept, which allows the art to show all the beauty of nature, along with all the beauty of buff bee dudes/dudettes. (1:08 - 1:23) GOD DAMN! Now those are some pretty looking sprites right there! You've really improved at selling the weight behind these moves, and especially how to show off the characters personality through the subtle differences between the animation ethos between each member. I love how Axis is quick on his feet in order to get to his target, but inexperienced with a sword, shown by the way he handles it, the wind up for the swing, and the time spent on the end of the animation, superb work! Also The in-between animation is really good, and works wonders to make me feel excited with each attack, not something often brought up but adds up big time, for smooth and exciting works. Cool to see more of Jangell's battle, still set in the same area which we saw just short of 2 years ago now, how far we've come... This also confirms for the first time I believe that enemies will also be having their own animations for all their attacks (if a bit more limited), which is a delight to know. "Carnival rain's" slight shading between shots looks rad, and the scattershot firing sells us even more on this clown's sadistic, and chaotic, style of combat. I love Sear's "Claw Horizon", with how it feels like a build up both for the lighting quick movement, and the hang time before the strike is perfection. It builds up Sear as a rough and trouble, no nonsense, and brutal combatant, who deals with all threats big and small with the same level of precision. Also, great use of smear frames when it comes to animation, a technique tried and true for a reason. We've seen "Soaring meteor" before, but I must again point out the little details; like seeing Astra's massive smile as she gets swung around, and the literal 4 frames of her being a ball of fire before an impact! TABLE TALK! I've said my piece before, but I will reiterate for people to give a gander, as it's fun and free! Finally at 1:44, we get the real star of the presentation, with another drastic mix of media! The work done by ProfessorLonic when it comes to their art is wonderful, and it's been a joy to see bits and pieces of their own work here and there. The animation is perfectly stiff, and emulates the speed-racer adjacent look perfectly. All the colours pop, and help sell the dire situation both parties find themselves in. I particularly love the way Krik's sword/lance/spear looks, with the scales and ware showing a well used weapon, closely tied to himself, while juxtaposing Axis's gleaming, small yet perfectly sized blade, which also feels like an extension of himself. Can't wait to see more of these two! And just as quickly as it began it switches back. We get one last glimpse into Jangell's personality as the voice work by Ms. Saulsbury sells the hatred underneath his hollow glam, while nailing the laugh we heard way back in the original reveal of the character. No wonder he's a fan favourite. Then we see it... Mother 5 (space edition)... Though in all honesty, I love the additional prop and would love to have that on my knick-knack shelf. Something you can look at and remember fondly the work put into this fantastic production, can't wait for the demo! Overall, a very different direction for a trailer to take, and yet one which feels super in line with what you and your production team want when it comes to Astral Guard. I really feel like I was pulled into the world, and reinvigorated with a passion for this project I was already white hot for! Then again… This does look an awful lot like Undertale… You sure you’re not just ripping off the work of a more successful artist? Also that laugh from Jangell could easily be the same as Zacharie from the critically acclaimed OFF?! Wow, this girl is really just stealing art wholesale… And all this, and she still doesn’t respect her diehard fans! I haven’t been featured in the game yet, ME, not to mention all his other long time supporters… Man, talk about going mainstream changing a person, she HATES her fans and only sees them as pawns to give her funds… So sad… Until this game stops being Undertale 2, and puts me specifically somewhere in the game, I’m sorry but for the 3rd year in a row, I’m going to have to say this is a 0/10 game, and we should all cancel Ms. Saulsbury at once!
@@punkitt Well I can say that seeing others feel joy for a good job well done, and being rewarded for their commitment to making fantastic art with worth praise and critical analysis, is always delightful. I will support this project with as much as I can give, until I'm in the ground. I can see great potential in both you and your art, and I want to see every second as it develops and blossoms out into other great art. Keep up the amazing work, and have a lovely day.
I think we all wanted to hear about how we could get easy cash from our workplace accidents, yet again Mason has failed us and show that she is a hack fraud.
those animations are looking extremely clean, and thats just in the game itself (how are you and whoever else is on the project doing that in rpg maker?) the puppets are so cool! plus the sudden anime moment shook me omg. awesome trailer!!!
If Kefka had a talk show
I cannot wait to play this on my official super Nintendo entertainment system hardware.
