Desenclos' Aria and Rondo was published in 1952 and it is clear that he, like other French composers of his generation, was greatly influenced by jazz, though he considered himself to be a Romantic composer. The Aria is soulful and dramatic, and the Rondo playful and rhythmic, with a powerful cadenza. Performed on December 14, 2023 by Gavin Hardy, while a high school junior, he captures both the virtuosity and passion here. Original music for the double bass of this quality from this time period is rare - it is a treasure!
