    I’ve been using a stereo pair of Homepods 2 + an Apple TV 4K as my main TV speakers for movies, music and gaming and it’s been amazing. I love that they don’t take up alot of space but can still provide a big body of sound. And the fact that I can easily unpair them and move them to different rooms on the fly is really clutch. Loving it so far!

    I have a 4 HomePod speaker setup. 2 HomePod 2’s paired in living room and then paired 2 HomePod minis and labeled them “Living Room Rear”. And when you tap the power button on the remote once a menu appears that will let you select audio menu. From there I checkmark both pairs of HomePods (2 and minis) Andjust the core volume I want them to be separate from each other then back out of that menu. TIP - set the minis volume a little higher to better match the larger HomePods. From there the regular volume control adjusts like normal for both sets. Then boom I have 4 speakers booming Apple Music in my living room space. Be sure to reverse the left and right rear speakers though to match the front speakers so the left and right audio matches. Of course, this isn’t true surround sound from Apple, but it is the best option to fill a room with music or movie audio until Apple gives us an update to allow 4 speakers for a real surround sound experience. One more thing to note is when you select to add on the rear speakers it is just temporary until you turn off the Apple TV after you turn off the TV and turn it back on you will have to re-select the additional speakers again. Not a big deal though, as it’s pretty easy to do, and only takes secaonds. It would be nice if somebody showed this set up in a video as I can’t find any videos, showing this set up.

    Hi Eric great video.
    I’ve had 2 HomePod 2s (stereo pair) now since Feb/23 and have tried them as my TV speakers and in another larger room, as my music source.
    My thoughts for the HomePod2s…
    1.)The HP2 have great sound but I have some areas where HomePod Minis may work better…. you need something other than a small room for the HP2s… you must have the space to let the sound reach its potential.
    2.) I’ve noticed that in some music (certainly not all) that the bass of the HP2s sound is definitively ‘thumpy’, making me thankful the HomeKit app has a ‘bass reduction’ feature that reduces this effect significantly.
    3.) and finally, comparing the HP2s to the HP minis makes me realize that the minis fill most nearly all my musical and TV speaker needs at a fraction of the cost.

    Thanks for this video. I’ve got two OG HomePods and two minis (in stereo pair), but I’ve been thinking about pairing the two OG HomePods to use as a sound bar in the bedroom and pick up a new one to put in the kitchen. Just been wondering how they perform with the new speaker setup. Also like the idea of snappier Siri for timers and home commands. Think I’m gonna pull the trigger.

    Sound detection worked for me today when I left the fridge ajar and went outside. It reported an "alarm sound" to me on my iphone. Thankfully it was not a smoke or carbon monoxide alert!

    I have the same troubles with my Amazon Alexa devices. They’re supposed to be able to determine what room you were in when you were trying to access them. For instance, I have one in my kitchen and one in my living room. They’re probably about 15 to 20 feet apart. They are in a open concept type setting. But on most cases, depending upon one update to another, they seem to have trouble responding in accordance to what room I am in. It seems, like most technology, that with every update. Things tend to get worse as time goes on. I’ve been in the Smart Home scene for more than 15 years. My experience is that when it comes to technology. Instead of the manufactures fixing and making things better with the current technology. They lean on the side of squashing everything that’s out currently. And then coming up with something completely new and different. Just to have to start all over again With trying to figure out how the new stuff works.
    I appreciate your reviews and comments. I recently went back to AppleTV since the new architecture came out. My family currently owns a few Apple products including the Apple iPhone and iPad. I was debating on whether or not to trade in my Alexa devices for the HomePod. but because of this video, I think I will hold off with that expense. It seems that whomever is in charge of programming. The infrastructure of the smart home devices must of went to the same school. Thanks again for your videos. Keep up the great content.

    • @EricWelander
      @EricWelander  Рік тому +2

      That's interesting to hear you Amazon experience being similar with detecting sounds. Smart home tech is challenging to scale across everyone's home setups and make it work well. All the best with your transition over to an Apple Home when you are ready to make the jump.

    Thanks for taking the time to investigate how well the "listen for alarm" feature works. I think it's a great feature for Apple to add to the HomePods, which adds value to a HomePod if you're already going to buy one. However it seems quirky enough that I wouldn't buy extra HomePods *just* to add that "listening" feature in more rooms. It might be nice to combine this alarm-recognition feature with a few Eve Room air-quality sensors in several rooms, although that could also get expensive. But if some HomePod detects a smoke alarm, you could then compare the air quality in multiple rooms to see which room(s) have a sudden drop in air quality.
    Are there other companies with smart air-quality sensors which cost less than Eve Room sensors?

    • @EricWelander
      @EricWelander  Рік тому +1

      Thanks Garance! Yes Aqara makes an air quality sensor that is a little less and still has an e-ink display. That's a creative and logical idea to look at air quality for smoke.

    **My Experience with HomePod Gen 2*. I will try to be brief as I can. I'm all about Apple Eco System. I got 2 for a stereo pair. AMAZING! I got it as a home theater setup and was well pleased. I upgraded from no "home theater" setup, and i love the minimalism. After a few days of the HomePods not telling me what the humidity was in my living room and just saying it was still calibrating Apple had me swap them for new ones. As of now my new left one is all good and very responsive to my phone and apple tv remote. The right HomePod does not respond to my apple tv remote. When I hit mute it doesn't mute, and when I turn the volume up or down it doesn't do it. Walked through many hard reset's with apple, the whole red spin and wait for 3 beeps thing. Finally, took it to apple and going to be swapping this right one for a new one. Thoroughly disappointed with how many times I've had to contact support and go to the store, but I'm a sucker for Apple so here I am trying to get things situated. Hope this helps or if anyone has encountered the same let me know!

    • @EricWelander
      @EricWelander  Рік тому +2

      Good point. The problem is that they simply don't fire the expected result. The temperature will cross the number set and nothing happens even within hours of the change.

    • @konatafan_9259
      @konatafan_9259 Рік тому +1

      In my personal experience, the HomePod and the automations it can run have been very helpful. I have automations set to where once it reaches a certain temp or humidity it turns on my fans. It works seamlessly with my iPhone 14 pro max, in all honesty if you’re not a big fan of bass or have a smaller room a HomePod mini might work better for you!

    • @konatafan_9259
      @konatafan_9259 Рік тому

      Both HomePods can run essentially the same features (correct me if I’m wrong), the full sized HomePods just have a much fuller richer sound. If you do decide to get a HomePod I strongly suggest a pair, as when you only have one of either it sounds like something is missing.

    • @EricWelander
      @EricWelander  Рік тому

      I think a HomePod is a good speaker and is probably the simple option here. I also agree that a HomePod mini gives you a lot of the same results for less money. The key differences with the bigger HomePod are the realtime tuning of audio to your room, and the bigger speaker with more sound. If you want to use it to listen to music a lot, I would go with a full size HomePod or a stereo pair of HomePod minis. If you just want a way to talk to Siri for timers and controlling your smart home, the HomePod mini is plenty. And for the price of one HomePod, you can put three HomePod minis in three rooms in your home.

      This is a cool idea. I bet it sounds good! I think you can do this temporarily via AirPlay for Apple TV content, but it is not part of the system that enables all TV audio output over HDMI eARC to go through HomePods or HomePods mini.
