This is, in my opinion, the best of the franchise. When people think or parody Lethal Weapon, they're are really thinking or parodying this movie and not the first one. Fun Fact: Despite the film's "Free South Africa" stance, it was passed uncut by the South African censors, and became a major financial success in that country.
Lethal Weapon 2 aired in 1989, one year before Apartheid ended in South Africa. By then, Nelson Mandela was becoming more popular as a political point of activism since many people demanded his release from prison.
@@jeffburnham6611 Officially apartheid ended in 1994 so 5 years after the movie. But yeah, it was a gradual process and even in 89' change was in the air, and at this time, apartheid was more theoretical than practical.
@@robland6804 I would bet that you must be South African then, because ALL movies do this to ALL villains. They do it to mobsters, Russians, Asians (i.e. pretty much ALL foreigners), etc. If they didn't, there wouldn't be a reason for them and they wouldn't add much to the plot, would they ???
The third and fourth are ABSOLUTELY worth watching. In fact you have to watch them all to get the most out of this franchise and the growth of the characters. It's so heart-warming.
Dude I’m so happy you went on with the Lethal Weapon franchise I knew you’d love this!! “Has just been revoked”. One of the most satisfying line delivery’s in film history.
Great review as always! I love all the Lethal Weapon movies, part 3 is actually my favorite and the highest grossing of all the movies in the franchise. Hope you give it a watch in the future!
The film really showed Joe Pesci's versatility as an actor. I found it incredible where he can play a goof like Getz and transform himself a year later when he played Tommy DeVito in Goodfellas.
A masterful actor. It's a shame he's only made 20-ish movies in his career, but that selectivity is probably a reason why we got the great performances from him.
This was a dark Sequel, as it's not only funny, but very serious. This was the first film I saw in the series. The film was released in the summer of 89, where BATMAN, GHOSTBUSTERS 2, THE ABYSS, Honey I Shrunk The kids, and other films were in theaters, including Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade.
Joss Ackland (who was also in 'The Hunt for Red October') is absolutely amazing as the villain of this movie, and even though he doesn't have much screen time, he nailed every single scene he had.
Yep all worth watching. The Gibson and Glover chemistry, Donner's direction and top notch action sequences are there throughout. To note in Shane Black's original LW2 script Riggs did die at the end. No way Warner Bros. was gonna kill off that money train though especially considering LW2 was a huge hit making more than twice as much as the first movie. Kerching! 💰 ☺
Yes, the crowd in the theater went absolutely nuts when Murtaugh shot Rudd aka Mr. Diplomatic Immunity. Also, it is always more impressive to have practical effects, and I like that you appreciate it when you see it in movies.
The song at the end is George Harrison's Cheer Down, maybe my favorite Harrison song ever. The South African diplomat was also the Soviet diplomat in Hunt for Red October.
Richard Donner was a fantastic director made several stone cold classics in different genres, The Omen, Superman and Lethal Weapon amongst many others.
What's important to remember about the condom commercial is that the major networks were not allowing condoms to be advertised for the longest time. in 1989 they were just starting to finally allow them, but they could only be played after a certain time at night. The scene was hilarious not only because the commercial ended up being a condom commercial which a surprise to Roger, but it was also very taboo at the time
This is a great reaction and commentary for Lethal Weapon 2 I enjoyed this so much. I am a huge fan of the Lethal Weapon franchise...... although some are done better than others I was not disappointed in any of them . I would love to see your reactions and comments for the other Lethal Weapon movies . Thank you for this treat
3 and 4 are worth watching for sure. I enjoyed seeing each of these films in the theater and you were right we all thought Riggs was dead or at least dying at the end. One of my favorite franchises. If I'm flipping channels and see one of them is on, no matter where it is in the movie I watch the rest of the movie. Great stuff. Keep up the good work.
I'm old enough to remember the HBO Making of...and how they took the stilt house down. So awesome that you nailed the accent the first time you heard it! Such a great reaction to this. Honestly, the first 2 films are classic to me. Part 3 is lesser, but I love the duet between Sting and Clapton on that soundtrack. Part 4 is the only one I saw in theaters. It is a great nostalgia wrap up but only the first 2 are rewatchable for me now. You have such thoughtful responses and excellent reactions that I'd love to have your take on the latter half of the series. Excellent content as always 👍
As an 80s kid I can wholeheartedly recommend watching all of them. You will not be dissapointed. Best buddy cop franchise period. They don't make them like they did back in the 80s
Yes, the other 2 sequels are worth reviewing. The fourth one is the weakest of the franchise but still pretty good. They set the bar really high with the first 3 movies. I would also recommend the movie 'Air America' with Mel Gibson and Robert Downey, Jr. (Edit. In the first Lethal Weapon, the bad guys were part of a shadow CIA operation running drugs in/around Vietnam War. They were a part of 'Air America'. It was a fake airline created by the CIA running covert operations. So there is some connections between the 2 movies.)
I agree the 4th one was sorta following the success that Rush Hour tried by bringing back the buddy cop genre and adding chinese cinematics. But unfortunately LW4 wasn't as good as the other 3
Sean, I would say that ALL of the Lethal Weapon movies were great. They always found a way to update the story and take it in a new direction, while introducing new characters, plot twists and bad guys. I think you'll like them, but I can't tell you which ones you'll like better.
Did you catch when they were killing all the cops and they got to the guys playing poker, it was a bunch of cops playing. When Murtagh was talking to Leo he told him "Because of you I'm missing my poker game"? In the words of Garth Brooks, "Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers."
"Running Scared" (1986) with Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines "Midnight Run" (1988) with Robert DeNiro and Charles Grodin Both are overlooked "buddy" movies from back then, both comedies too.
You owe it to yourself to watch 1984's "The Bounty" with Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins if you want to see Mel in what I consider to be his best "rage" scene. Beautiful movie with a VERY young Daniel Day Lewis in a small role. New subscriber 👍
Joining the chorus saying 3 and 4 are both worth watching. Wanted to add a recommendation if you want another movie with a Mel Gibson going a different type of crazy, try Conspiracy Theory. Payback is also pretty good
Initially Riggs was supposed to die at the end but Lethal Weapon franchise was so much a success that they convinced them to let him live for a Lethal weapon 3.
“Loaded Weapon” is a great ‘spoof’ of this movie (and many others of the genre). It has a version of the “stuck on the toilet” scene as well as when Riggs’ caravan gets shot up with an unexpected cameo. I will say no more, except, please watch it. Great reaction once again. Thanks. Ps. Also hanging out for the next BOND reaction.
Another film you hopefully get to react to is Fight Club from 1999. It's a film that's gained a huge following over the years and stars Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, Helena Bonham Carter and the recently deceased Meatloaf (1947 - 2022). It's one of those rare films that gets better every time you watch it.
This was my introduction to Joe Pesci as a teenager. I had no idea how much I would come to love his work. This was considered sort of a comeback film for him at the time. The sequels get thin after this one...... I do recommend "Loaded Weapon" a "Naked Gun"/Airplane style of spoof on the buddy cop genre. Featuring two big names in the lead roles...
Like the stilt house demolition? Like the addition of Leo Getz? Like character growth Riggs goes thru? Just wait until Lethal Weapon 3. As for the Murtaugh house, it takes a different kind of trauma in the next one. Didn't spoil it, but you have to read between the lines of the previous sentence. Enjoy! btw, there's an after credits scene in Lethal Weapon 3
'Aliens' connection: The blonde guy shot on the plastic floor tarp, played marine 'Drake' and the redhead blown up on her diving board played marine 'Vasquez'.
Parts 3 and 4 are good in their own way and complete the story. There's also a fifth movie coming out this year or next and will be directed by Mel Gibson. BTW, Krugerrands were illegal in the US during Apartheid in South Africa. They became legal after Nelson Mandela became President.
Mel's love interest in this, Patsy Kensit was known at the the time at least in Europe as singer of the band Eight Wonder. They had couple of hits biggest of them being I'm not Scared written and produced by Pet Shop Boys. Nowadays she is just actress.
Yes, both 3 & 4 are worth the watch. If you want to see Mel Gibson in more serious roles, here are two films to place on your list: 'The Man Without a Face' - 1993. and 'Forever Young' - 1992.
I saw 4 in the cinema and I remember reading that WB realized in 1998 that they didn’t have any big movie for the summer so they quickly put together Lethal 4 really fast. Shot it and released it.
This is one of the few movie franchises where there's not a huge gulf in quality between all 4 movies. A lot of credit for that has to go to Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, two exciting actors with excellent chemistry together.
Derrick O'Connor was an effectively creepy evil henchman here in this movie, it's funny to think that in Terry Gilliam's "Brazil" he and Bob Hoskins played the goofy HVAC workers Spoor and Dowser.
#2 is my favorite by far. I think there are aspects of the first movie that didn't quite work for me but this one is so solid throughout. The third is definitely worth a watch too, another solid sequel.
Lethal Weapon 3, yes! Mind you, it MAY (depending on your personal taste) be a little step down, but it develops Riggs's and Murtaugh's arcs. Lethal Weapon 4, though, is the consolidation. It has two additions to the cast; Chris Rock and Jet Li, in his American cinema debut. You won't be disappointed by watching them. 🙂

Definitely recommend finishing the series. Some people only like the 1st one, but I suggest you watch them and make up your own mind. The "comedy" is still there, but the story and relationships evolve.
Fun fact, Riggs was supposed to die. Movie was supposed to end on the pan up shot. Studio forced Donner to add the scene after the pan up shot where he didn't die, because the studio wanted the option for the sequel.
Lethal Weapon 3 and 4 are definitely worth reviewing on your channel. I love the whole series, and I really enjoy your reviews.
These 2 also appear together in a underrated western comedy "Maverick" definitely worth a watch and review.
Thanks for reminding me that movie exists! I haven't watched it in forever. So good.
Agreed!
Congratulations you spoiled a really funny surprise from the film.
Some people 🤦🏼♂️
Maverick is a very funny film .
One of the rare examples of a TV-to-film adaptation being as good or better than the show. And Garner killed it as usual.
what I love most about this series is all the characters come back for all the sequels. you rarely get that
''... but, but, but, ..., you're Bleck.'' I still quote that line
3rd and 4th are deffo worth a watch. This is one of the most consistent franchises
The Action franchise that feels like home. Expect these films to become part of your "anytime movie" rotation.
This is, in my opinion, the best of the franchise. When people think or parody Lethal Weapon, they're are really thinking or parodying this movie and not the first one.
