The best driver I've ever played to date was the 2014 Big Bertha. I hit my longest drive with it and it was in the middle of the fairway on a par 5 (270) Chunked the 4H approach. Chunked the 8 iron approach. Skulled the pitch shot over the green. Chipped on and two putted for double bogey. *sigh*
I have been playing the Callaway XR driver for the past 4 years. Whenever a new driver has come out over the past 3 years, I take my XR to the store and hit it against the newest one with usually the same shaft. Invariably there is little if any difference in carry yardage. I do believe that the sweet spots have grown a bit in the newer drivers, so miss hits are not as punishing.
@@dark1382 I agree with you buddy.. but their are shaft and club fitters they don't do course vlogs and only do indoor testing totally.. its toyally different out doors especially in UK where it's always cold an wet 😫🌨
For your stats, PGA tour average drive wasnt 317 in 2019, the average of the longest hitter on tour was 317. The average of the top 188 on Tour in 2019 is 295 yards. In 2006 tour average was 289, cant find 2004 numbers. Longest ever tour average was Hank Kuehne as far as I can see, with 321 yards, in the early 2000s
Really loving these collaborations lately, Mark Crossfield and James Robinson on one video?!? Dreams really do come true! Best drivers in recent time for me: 2016 M2, Cobra Fly-Z, Cobra BioCell, Callaway XR Sub Zero, Mizuno ST190G, Ping G410 Plus
1988 I bought my first full set of clubs. Spalding Tour Edition. Eventually swapped them out for Mizuno JPX900 hot metal in 2018. Still to date the Spalding produced my longest drives. The fact that I was a hell of a lot younger and flexible might play a part, but I loved the driver.
I used a Ping G30 since 2014 right when I started playing golf and only recently changed this last year because I cracked the face. I switched to a Ping g400 Max and there are still days I miss my G30. Ping is the best golf company in my opinion
I love the collabs with James. I started following him this year and love his channel. I've been following you for several years and have learned so much from you...thank you. Your teaching, vlogs, and reviews are without peer.
Love these tech type vlogs. Good to see some more stuff with James as well. The Ping is definitely showing its class. Would be interesting to see one of these with a single brand over the years.
Love this vid, I purchased a ping g5 new a few months after it came out, changed it 4 years ago after buying a titleist (number 1 driver in golf) 910 D2, love it, been to my local golf shop chain branded who offer win a new driver when you outhit you’re old tired thing with the latest gear, I hit straighter and longer every time with the D2, wouldn’t change it for the world
I currently use a Callaway Big Bertha 816 Alpha DBD which works very well. It has a center of gravity nearer the face which I always hit better than the back weighted drivers. Apparently that is because is swings more like an iron with the forward cog.
Been hitting a 2012 Ping Anser for years. Just can't beat the look or the feel. Did have an Aldila Proto 60 Stiff in it but put Hzrdus Smoke 5.5 in it last year. My feeling is the shaft is the most important aspect of newer drivers and at 66 years old I needed to back off just a tad. Seemed to work, I'm getting about 235-240 out of it. My playing partners are all in there early 50s and can't hit any of their newer model drivers past my Anser.
I was fitted with the Ping G30 several years ago and was thinking of updating. After seeing this video I think I will hang onto it a while longer. Incidentally, a while back I went for a fitting for a new driver. Tried Ping G400 and Titleist D17. Neither gave any performance advantages so stuck with the G30. Great video by the way.
The 2016 was my favorite I've had to date, but I ended up with a dent in the face of it at one point. TM replaced it with a 2017 model and it never did feel as good.
My favorite driver would probably be the 2012 Callaway Razr Fit Tour Authentic. Which I paid $499 back then. I still have it in the closet. Every year I get fit and a new driver. I like new clubs! 😆
I dont change drivers much. I started out with a Srixon W-506, moved to the Cobra F speed (because I liked there DWS hybrids and that was the matching driver). Played the Cobra for a long time, then I wanted an adjustable club so I moved into a Cleveland Custom 588 (It is a very forgiving club). I just changed to a Taylormade R15 (14 degree) I got it from a friend. Trying a tip I got from Mr Crossfield about lofting up if your swing speed is 100mph. I must say that works, it's more accurate and I haven't lost any distance. I do deliver the driver slightly down so more loft is good.
Think I may go for the Taylormade M2 in the coming year. I've been looking to upgrade and seeing that it's certainly better than my VRS from 2012 but is still pretty much cutting edge compared to the 2018/2019 models seems like a solid value. I definitely felt like 2005-2011 was a big jump in tech, followed by 2012-2016, and now the current era where it will be very hard to make changes to golf tech in regards to the legal limits allowed by the governing bodies of golf.
Only just changed my driver after 10 years. The new one is a marginal gain in carry, but lower spin (hopefully for summer run out). As you say in the video, if it looks nicer on your eye, you generally feel more confident with the club your holding. Great honest video without the manufacturers hype.
Just replaced my TISI TEC by ping ( bought new in 98 I believe) with the Taylor Made M5 . All I can say is wow!!!!! Also replaced my ping I3's with taylormade p 790's . Life is good. Great vid.
My first ever woods were Petron Impala 2 and 4 woods in 1978. My latest (and probably last) are TaylorMade M2 HL driver, Ping G 5 wood (adjusted to 4 wood) and Ping G 3 hybrid). There have been many in between! The latest are easily the best, but the only one to have been custom fit.
I have had all of the new drivers over the past couple of years and I keep going back to my 910d2 and I just picked up a mint 2016 m2 But my favorite of all time is the FT-3 tour I have cracked several in my days
Hi guys, just started watching this video. Straight off my head, great idea. It is great to be able to put some perspective on old and new clubs. It gives the people some information to decide for themselves.
SoCal Golf Then TaylorMade would get pissed as you would see they stole the M1 design from the Biocell . I still game the Amp Pro from time to time, best sounding driver ever IMHO.....
I went from Cleveland HiBore that just kept working to a Supertri that did not work. Going to end of year discounted G400 the shop was trying to get out to fit in the G410. Fit for me and much better driving.
I started with a 3 iron, didn’t get a wood for about two years and they were a Dunlop Maxfli Persimmon driver and Dunlop Blue Flash 4 wood. I’m now rocking a Cobra F7 and a couple of hybrids, no fairway woods.
Mine is a TITLIEST 983K love your channel and have fell back in love with golf thanks to all your guys new content and some other inspiration. Keep up the good work . Id also like to see some history lessons of golf as in names of great players stories of old players that dont get the recanition that they should!
Haven’t really seen a huge change in distance from all the drivers I have gamed, but improvements in Changeability have shown more consistency in distance. Don’t loose as much with the miss hits as I did years ago. My r11 quad was still the longest distance driver I ever played, but when it went wrong boy did it go wrong. I don’t see that as much with my current m3 and I was playing more golf and striking the ball much better back then. Love the videos lads.
I recently picked up a Honma 737 455 and was a little worried it might be shorter being a couple if years older, but it isn't and it looks like you've proved distance over the last 10 years hasn't really changed. Glad I didn't spend a fortune for the newest version!!
I'm still gaming the ping g driver stiff Alta shaft with grey golfpride med grip from 2016. I've tried newer ones but I keep coming back to it. It just works
Great video again, good to see you and James doing some interesting stuff together. Gotta love how James really nailed the first few drives, full power, using the ground to "jump" through the shot, whereas Mark plays his standard pat ball and only ends up 4 yards behind. Delivery is everything :)
Changed From a Callaway XRPro 9 to a Tour Edge Exotics 9.5 this year. 30% more fairways, no difference in distance. Felt forgiving at demo day, hasn’t disappointed since. Scooped up for $110 as a barely hit demo.
I am really loving these collaborations and the content that it's producing between you two guys. I really hope you continue to do this into the future it's fantastic
My first set of irons were some beat up Petron impala’s, my dad bought me them from a boot sale! Never even knew they were a known brand until you just mentioned your first driver!
My 910D3 is actually slightly longer than my TS3 but it’s a bit beaten up and not as forgiving on my trusty “toe slap” miss hence the upgrade. Top video Mark and James 👍
Earlier this year I just switched from a 2005 Adams 430Q to a Callaway 816 Alpha DBD Driver with the same shaft. I had trouble drawing the Adams even with the weight in the heel. It was fade biased. The Callaway is easier to hit straight and therefore to control. The Callaway is a little bit longer, but that could be because of the superior control.
I am still using a TaylorMade r7, which I have been using for the last 11 years. Finally looking to upgrade and hence why I'm watching this video. Finding it difficult to hit the new age drivers as they have changed so much over the last 10 years.
I changed this week! From G400SFT to Epic Flash. Had my first game with it today. Too much hard work with the Ping Tour 65g S shaft after swapping out the Alta CB 55g S. My favourite previous driver was the 915D2 having had the 913 and 917 either side of it
When I was fitted in 2016 the choice for me was Callaway x16 pro or Cobra King LTD. Both gave me the same numbers. I chose the Cobra mainly because I had no misses left, which was my dreaded miss at the time.
Great vid guys and great to see a informative collaboration.....Just a bit gutted you left the Covert out as I personally loved the Tour version of that club.
I got fit for a Callaway Double Black Diamond 3 years ago or so. Last month I won a new Callaway Epic Flash with fitting. The fitter was the same pro on both occasions. He couldn’t get me hitting further or straighter with the Epic Flash..... he is a mate so we said we would wait until I needed a new one .....
Great to see you guys together reviewing clubs - more of the same please - not played a driver for a number of years but had such a good experience with the Titleist fitter for my T300 irons am going to book a session for a driver fitting - either TS2 or TS3 - can't wait and we'll see what I'm recommended!!
Good video guys!! Really liked this one to show how much marketing is put into products. Test test test the product and see if it works for you. Thanks guys.
By the way the model before m2 was the aeroburber, and the jetspeed previous to that one, both of which I had before the m2, and to their credited were all fantastic drivers! My evolution went RBZ, Jetspeed, Aeroburner, M2, Done. Since then nothing has best my 2016 m2, it's still in the bag to this day.
Been struggling with my driver all year, my pro put a bag full of old clubs for a tenner each out the other day and I picked out a callaway steel head 3 driver (2002) and haven’t missed a fairway since!!
Bought a Taylor Made SLDR when it came out a few years back now, based on Mark's recommendation, and still loving it. Even if I could get a few more yards with a newer driver it's not something I would consider since I have a lot of confidence with the SLDR.
For distance.......Great Big Bertha......old school....8*.......it was a beast that won me many a Long Drive Contest............but for overall play.......Ping I-25......9*......and it's still in my bag !!!
last year spent £200 on a TM M4 and very happy with it, parting with a Callaway V Series which i sold for £50, I could not justify rinsing £400+ on a driver which realistically doesn't perform any better for me - same with irons, picked up a set of AP2 712s off ebay for £150 and they are spot on.
Seem to remember seeing CH3 using that Callaway driver at Firestone back in the day. Sticks out in my mind because he was crushing it in a practice round. Was Lefty using it as well?
Interesting stuff. 👏 what happens if you compare results starting from club head speed? Then look at ball speed, carry/total distance, spin, launch etc. That would mean you see which club converts the club speed best and gets better launch and distance?🤔👍
Great big Bertha II was a great driver in its day, you've tested the + model which has the illegal faster face so what does that tell us? Longer shafts better than a hotter face?
I use the Callaway X460 driver from 2006. It was my Dads driver he handed it down to me. I’m looking around at newer second hand drivers, but I’m not sure there is enough improvement for me to warrant the change, and due to the fact I’m still in my teens there are more important things for me to save for at the moment.
I play the TaylorMade M2. I love it but I've never been fitted and would love to get fitted someday. I recently just had my first golf lesson at 38 years old really wish I would have got a lesson a long time ago. Hoping to maybe have another lesson and get fitted before this coming golf season.
Enjoyed the comparisons, great video Mark and James. My best driver is my current one, Callaway Rouge, not surprising because it was the only one I was fitted for.
I play the M2 you’ve got there for all the reasons you’ve said, even when others smirked. It’s the same as tennis rackets, the big change was quite some time ago 🎾👍🏻
Hi Mark and James, interesting vlog. I play with a Ping G20 tinkered with a few others looking for extra yardage. But my trusty G20 finds the fairway more often than not, so would rather lose the search for extra yards as a compromise. Rather drive 200yds down the fairway than 200+ from the rough.
What’s the best driver of all time?
Taylor Made XR05 CTI
SLDR kind of started the whole low spin high launch thing. The first of the launch monitor beaters
*sigh*
Titleist 905 R
Callaway Epic sub zero for me I`ve never tried a PING yet though

gaming the Titleist 915 D3, want the TS3 or TS4, simple adjustability and a good shaft, confidence inspiring. Awesome collaboration you two.

Got the clevland launcher HB last year love it 10.5 stiff I know no fit but works really well for me shaft is light but really stable very loud!!

Also Nike Covert? Mark also gamed that one.
Yes! The SLDR - the low spin bomber!
I ended up going for a fitting back in March with no particular brand bias and left with a PING G410 plus.
Taylor Made 2007 Burner (first series)
Got a golf fitting the other day brought my 2007 burner first series and went as far as the Callaway maverick
I currently use a Callaway Big Bertha 816 Alpha DBD which works very well. It has a center of gravity nearer the face which I always hit better than the back weighted drivers. Apparently that is because is swings more like an iron with the forward cog.
Best driver I haver used through the ages is a taylormade burner superfast.
I play the burner SF 2.0, 3-wood and it'll go nearly as far as my driver. Makes me think my driver was a ripoff.
It's shaft is almost as long as a driver, so not surprised lol
Still rocking the ol Ping g20 and can still hit it 300 consistently. It still feels amazing.
Lets go back in time with ball tech as well, because imo that’s where the real distance has been gained

You and james do the best collaborations. Great stuff.
An unlikely duo, the new rick and peter
Good video guys!! Really liked this one to show how much marketing is put into products. Test test test the product and see if it works for you. Thanks guys.
By the way the model before m2 was the aeroburber, and the jetspeed previous to that one, both of which I had before the m2, and to their credited were all fantastic drivers! My evolution went RBZ, Jetspeed, Aeroburner, M2, Done. Since then nothing has best my 2016 m2, it's still in the bag to this day.
I love my Titleist 917, but right now i love my Ping G 410
Been struggling with my driver all year, my pro put a bag full of old clubs for a tenner each out the other day and I picked out a callaway steel head 3 driver (2002) and haven’t missed a fairway since!!
Love that!
Did the ball change much in that year range? And someone's going have an eye out with a tee peg.
Bought a Taylor Made SLDR when it came out a few years back now, based on Mark's recommendation, and still loving it. Even if I could get a few more yards with a newer driver it's not something I would consider since I have a lot of confidence with the SLDR.
I'm in the market for a new driver, I was thinking about giving the G425 a look when it comes out... this video was really validating.
For distance.......Great Big Bertha......old school....8*.......it was a beast that won me many a Long Drive Contest............but for overall play.......Ping I-25......9*......and it's still in my bag !!!
Great collaboration guys. Very enjoyable.
Whenever you talk distance I think you need to consider percentage of fairways hit as well?
I have just changed from callaway xr and gone back to a titleist d2 910 and i just love it😁great content 👍
last year spent £200 on a TM M4 and very happy with it, parting with a Callaway V Series which i sold for £50, I could not justify rinsing £400+ on a driver which realistically doesn't perform any better for me - same with irons, picked up a set of AP2 712s off ebay for £150 and they are spot on.
Seem to remember seeing CH3 using that Callaway driver at Firestone back in the day. Sticks out in my mind because he was crushing it in a practice round. Was Lefty using it as well?
Best UA-cam golf video I’ve seen in a long time. I’m off to buy a Ping G30!
Very interesting video. Good job guys
My Top 3 of all time...
#1 PING G400
#2 PING G30
#3 Callaway Razr Extreme
G400 Max is awesome long but forgiving.
