  • In this mini series of 'How To Teach Kids Tennis'... video 2 of 5 is on the forehand.
    Aimed at parents and coaches, I show you some of the ways that I like to progress junior players through from beginner to hitting with a good forehand action. Although the progressions are aimed at 8 and under players, they are also suitable for older players that are new to the sport.

    Great work Ashley. Just an observation mate, you mentioned the semi western / eastern forehand grip but then all progressions except the last one you demonstrated in the chopper grip? Any reason? I do very similar progressions then adjust the grip around the 4th / 5th progression. I guess, even as a coach you feel it’s easier to get success with the chopper grip when doing bounce taps etc but then on the full motion, it’s easier to use semi western...? A common discussion amongst coaches is whether to start young ones straight away with quite a spiny grip... Nonetheless, keep up the good work. Brilliant coaching delivery and excellent source of content for coaches to refresh themselves of the coaching basics.

      Thanks Peter, you’re right!
      I don’t generally specify a grip initially with the little ones, until they’re able to track the ball effectively and rally. Whatever they’re comfortable with (within reason😅).
      I like to do lots of games based exercises to develop the physical competencies and sending and receiving skills so that when we do start to introduce spin, they’re ready, and robust enough for the grip to feel comfortable.
      I may have been cheating with the conti grip on the low bouncing red balls on the grass 🤣🌱🎾

      @@TheTennisMentor Yes me too. And I like the fact that you specify those things and the importance of receiving & sending skills and the motor skills. We could discuss these finer details forever but with these videos, podcasts and webinars, it’s good that we are all closer to all being on the same page from a teaching aspect, for the future athletes in GB tennis at every level.

      @@TheTennisMentor I see this is from a year ago but I was revisiting and I noticed the same thing. Thanks for cleaifying. And it is also true right that the 'mirror pose' is only possible from a semi western grip right? So if im teaching the kids the earlier progressions from a chopper (or as I do a slight eastern grip) than you can't tell them to do the mirror pose right? Or so you use that pose to make that transition to the 'advanced' grip?
      Thanks!

  • @tigrankurdiyan2809
    @tigrankurdiyan2809 3 роки тому +1

    Would you advocate teaching children spin or flat shots? Landsdorp thinks if you teach them spin you set them up for failure in the future. I must say I once saw a first round match between Smashnova and another girl. Smashnova’s shots were super spin and nothing but. The other girl hammered her down on that rising ball. Smashnova lost to love or 1 and 1. But then there’s Serena who has spin on her shots.

    • @TheTennisMentor
      @TheTennisMentor  3 роки тому +2

      An interesting topic. I try to give the players that I work with all of the tools that they need to develop their own game style. I think it’s really important for kids to learn spin and to understand how the ball interacts with the strings and with the court surface. Some kids will grow up to be big, flat hitters, using spin less often... others with more spin and height over the net. In my opinion, the more tools you have in your game, the better!

      Thanks, I've got a kids coach in my club who's hell bent on Oscar Wegner's real tennis system. By his own admission he cannot hit flat to save his life. Very focused on technique development in young kids. In my simplistic understanding, you just feed balls and ask them to swing at them and their body will find a way to do it efficiently anyways. I decided to employ him for two sessions a week with my 6 year old daughter. He'll teach her spin and on other two days I will teach her flat and then one more group session on Saturdays (hopefully they'll teach her slice there, the most efficient and underrated shot in tennis). Mate, it's a shame you're not London based, judging by your videos you are as close to an ideal kids tennis coach as it gets- I would have loved you to coach my daughter.
      I should add that I was taught spin and spin only having been raised on clay courts. Whatever had no spin was not considered a shot. It plagues me now big time. Even if I try and blast at the ball like there's no tomorrow it still comes out weaker that some thin teenager's flat, short swing forehand. Unbelievable and all because of darned spin.

    Shouldn't the followthrough reflect the situation? Like a short putt in golf wouldn't have a long, exaggerated followthrough?

    • @TheTennisMentor
      @TheTennisMentor  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, you’re right. The follow through is really a ‘deceleration’ of the racket after the ball has been struck. Therefore, isn’t needed in the first progressions where players are focussing on getting the ball over the net and in the court as the swing is short. However, when looking to progress and to add depth or speed to a shot, that is when the player would need a bigger swing and therefore the follow through becomes longer. (The external cue of ‘big nose finish’ can help kids to lengthen their swing). In hindsight, I should have moved my position back to the baseline in this clip to demonstrate the need for a bigger swing!

    • @poida007
      @poida007 3 роки тому +1

      @@TheTennisMentor Well said. Yes, technique should reflect tactical intent and situation. The big nose 👃 can be a helpful guideline for some players that decelerate the racket too early, but if they don't, then it's likely not necessary if they have enough racket head speed and relax with proper breathing. Thanks for the follow-up.
      How do you teach acceleration and racket head speed?

    • @TheTennisMentor
      @TheTennisMentor  3 роки тому +1

      👍👍 A little drill I use for racket head speed (occasionally) is hitting balls with a towel instead of a racket. It requires more acceleration, encouraging better use of legs and hips to initiate the swing.
      How about you?

    • @poida007
      @poida007 3 роки тому +1

      @@TheTennisMentor Yes, that's good, I've tried that as wel asl pulling racket out hand from coach holding it back with some resistance.
      Maybe make a video on these exercises. The guys from Top Tennis Training have something along those lines but not hitting ball with towel.

    These type of children’s lessons are such bull crap! Try that with a 6-7 year old that HAS NEVER played tennis before, huh!!?? Of course, you, the coach, doing those drills that you just demonstrated, make it look so easy. However, those actions are incredibly difficult for little peewees. I’ll only watch your channel, from now on, subscribe and like, if you actually go and get a 6-7 year old who’s a ranked beginner, and make him/her do those drills. It HAS to be a total beginner though, not like other online teachers, who recruit these phenoms and make them act like they’re beginners🤣😂

    this is really good for 2 to 4 years old but not good idea footstep if you are going to rally... side step is bad... i rather teach kids to walk or run to the ball and stop and hit through the ball rather than side side side and turn and hit because it just so bad for footwork
