Yessssssss can’t wait 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

FYI: Using a focus whip, is not for acceleration it's to get away from the camera. Especially when operating hand held or the camera is moving. A speed crank on the other hand, is for faster pulls. ✌️
Worth noting that smallrig has optional alternative gear sizes to deal with lenses that have either really small or really long focus throw. I think thats pretty important.
Just ordered a 65tooth 3200 smallrig gear for this same reason. I have 2 of the Meike lenses coming in that he uses and never dealt with a long focus throw like that so I’m hoping that bigger gear will help
@AaronBrown-rr6yu I’m now using the focus motor from DJI with my RS3 Pro and when I’m on a hand rig I’m using the PDMovie Air 3 Smart that comes with LiDAR auto focus and manual focus
This and the new mini matte box would complete my new rig, outside of a cine lens. This is a great combo!
Stay tuned for the mattebox next week
@@chrisbrockhurst I definitely will!
The focus throw lock is very cool]
Really useful feature
Fantastic video man, thank you so much. Super casual but very informative. Didn't even know about the A B and how it worked, and was so frustrated not knowing how to use that ring for non cinema right lenses.
Bravo SmallRig, genius little design! Also, CUTs because their Tees are awesome, k see ya next week, byeeeeee
I thought the Whips were meant to reduce vibration during focusing.
I totally need this. Delivery time was five weeks when I last checked!
Really neat solution by SmallRig to make it so you don't need rails. Might I suggest a deeper DOF on the front shots because basically only your face is in focus so the things on the table get out of focus. Keep it up my dude!
Thanks for sharing this. Noted
Was just coming to say the same thing; no hate just friendly advice
Super handy piece of kit! I need a follow focus for my vintage Russian lenses that I like to shoot with for short film stuff
Vintage Russian glass is great. Helios 44-2!!
Looks great. I always pull focus with right hand tough.
OMG! Great product info! A t-shirt commercial? Love it!
Looking forward to hearing more about the matte box. Would be nice to know if you can turn a variable ND in it!
Stay tuned, coming next week
I know a few testers and they were able to turn VND’s in it, I can’t confirm on the sizes of filters though. The tray they made for the filters is a much better design than tilta’s mini box as well.
I have the Tilta Mini, it's not great, ever since I got it I've had problems with its smoothness, drives me nuts. This looks similar but hopefully smoother, I like that you can lift the marker stop out of the way. A whip is okay, but for a one man band a small crank works a lot better.
This is super smooth, no issues so far
Excellent video, thank you Chris
Smallrig does it again.
They definitely know how to make quality gear cheap
Screws work themselves out over time, you won't even notice losing them. Smallrig charges you $5 per screw and $10 shipping. Should be covered by manufacturers warranty.
A bit disappointed we didn't get any footage of you using it but overall great stuff man.
actually a shame I didnt have this a few weeks prior for the manual focus lens video, would have been perfect
@@chrisbrockhurst Absolutely! But maybe you could do a video specifically on follow focus and tips and settings for manual video shooters.
Great review chris i am planning to invest on cine lenses for my fullframe and this video is a huge help.
Did you notice any added resistance on the meike? I have the tilta now, and it is designed for photo lenses and so it’s super damp. It actually makes my focus pulling slower on cinema lenses. I was curious if you noticed any thing like this with the small rig
i mounted mine and it works great.
Dope!!! Looking forward to this.
🤙🏻
@@chrisbrockhurst nice little teaser. I know that next video is that mini Matte box. But can I get a head start on it. Is it from smallRig? Bc I recently bought their matte box and well doesn’t work well with my NDs. So if that is a SR brand that works with round NDs I would definitely send this back and pick that up.
Love your reviews! On your matte box review, can you test to see if you can get an 82mm round filter (Peter McKinnon's) on the end? I know they don't give a filter adapter but thinking you should be able to adapt it with step up rings? Anyway, I'm very curious about that. I preordered just in case so hopefully you can review before it ships!
You should defiantly check out my video coming next week 👌🏻
@@chrisbrockhurst was it a yes or a no?
great review. very helpful pal thanks!
Thank you. Great presentation.
Very nicely explained, how about winner between tilta vs smallrig - follow focus . 🤔
Grats Chris, thanks to you Smallrig are out of stock! Grrrrrr.
haha uh oh
Does this work with bigger lenses, like the 70-200?
A Comparison to the Tilta 99.00 follow focus, which looks pretty solid, might be nice..I bought the mini matte box (tilta) also and it is quite nice but filters over 77mm do NOT work. Maybe the smallrigcopy is better?
I don’t have the title one unfortunately so don’t have a way to compare
I want to see a war between Smallrig and Tilta!
Simply perfect
Great video Chris thanks. I have an original black magic camera and I love the way the video looks. It has little or no autofocus do you find this a problem when doing video jobs with the 4K. Thanks Glenn
so you basically need a cage for this Follow Focus system?
Super great video. Very informative. May we pause for a moment and admire the custom lens cap for the Sigma Art! Where did you get that! = )
That’s a polar pro PMVND!
@@chrisbrockhurst Ahhh. Haha. It is the cap for the polar pro! =) Looks pretty slick. Got me rethinking my B+W.
What lens is attached to the camera? Nice video by the way!!
The whip is for the 1st ac
Very good quality review. But I could lose something: Is it possible to reverse the direction of rotation related to the lens? Basically, I need the lens to rotate counterclockwise when I turn the knob clockwise... ??? Thanks!
Can't decide between Smallrig one and Tilta one
Great video😀👍
Thanks Chris
thanks for watching
Great video. I have a potentially stupid question, i assume it isnt possible to use a follow focus with a zoom lens?
You can depending whether or not the focus ring moves forwards and backwards when zooming. I’m pretty certain (at least with my lens) that the focus ring stays in the same place when you zoom. You can also use this follow focus to achieve smooth zooms if you’d like. You just need to put the gear around the zoom ring. Hope this helps.
Great video! What hand grip do you have on there? Xx
Great review, straight to the point. Would this FF be mountable on the FX3 without cage?
it would, but would probably loosen over time as its only one thread mount on the left side of fx3
Won't help on a fly-by-wire lens, going to be a nightmare to pull focus on a subject anyway. Sony needs more hybrid lenses. Looks neat though.
Most lenses are fly by wire these days, nothing will help if you’re looking at it that way 🤷🏻♂️
Hey man, is there anyway that you could drop the link of that handle that you are using in the video? Thanks!
What’s the model no. of the Tilta right hand strap you’re rocking there ?
Definitely need one of those
You think I could use this for zoom instead?
Can this be used to act as a rig to zoom in and out with lens and not just focus. Say I want to get it so I can freely zoom in and out of my lens so I avoid the shake
Is this good on a gimbal? Trying to hold the gimbal & pulling focus is easy?
Hey, do you know if it can change directions? I just bought a Pentax vintage lens and it turns different direction with my other lenses.
Can I use this to zoom in /out when using Canon 70-200mm?
Any way you can still use the left mounted side handle with that?
It needs a rubber band, it never stays put, I returned one thinking it was just weak but nope they're really a POS in terms of focus wheels. 4 dollars worth of black bands make them stay.
Nice video but the question is how can you utilize that and produce a smooth shoot if you are shooting hand held
I can see what your saying, you mean because of the grip?
@@chrisbrockhurst yes..you can use it only with a tripod ? otherwise you will get super shaky footage
I mean it depends on how you hold it, with the active stabilization I don’t see it being an issue at all
I agree. I bought this follow focus recently and have exactly that problem. Holding the camera in one hand and having the follow focus sway around to the side makes you lose one point of stability. Focusing directly on the barrel is easier and sturdier since you have the palm of your hand supporting the camera too. Even in your demonstration above, you could see the camera wobbling around. IBIS is not a cure for that. This follow focus is a nice gimmick but in my case, I have to find a work-around to use efficiently. Sad.
Can you use this zoom too
Can you use this for zooming in and out?
Can you use it to zoom?
Can I use this for Zoom Control as well ?
I just order one and didn't order any
t shirts over price I think.
quality though.
Any idea if you can use the follow focus on Camvate or Zucato cages?
Chris, what gear size do you recommend for sigma 24-70? Stock one or bigger? I don’t want to roll it whole day to focus 😄
82! Not many lenses are bigger
@@chrisbrockhurst thanks 👍🏼
Hi, how to reverse the gear movement for photo lenses?
Can this be mounted to a gimble .. like ronin sc ?
Are the tee-shirts any good for cleaning lenses?
Yep
Can we attach this to ronnin sc gimbal
Hey ! Thanks for the review. Just buy one. But when i'm mooving it, it always jumps from cranks, especialy when i'm mooving fast so it's not working well. I'm using it with smallrig Focus Gear Ring.. Does this happened to you ? Thanks..
Probably an issue with the follow focus swiveling away from the lens because it has only one contact point with the rod. It's the reason why I haven't bought one but I'm considering the Fotga DP500 III. The Fotga needs two rods and will require a rod clamp baseplate but I suppose it's not too big an increase in overall weight.
What handle/wrist strap is that? Great vid btw :)
Hi Michael. It appears to be the Tilta cage that includes a hand strap. I’m guessing Chris purchased the cage that fits his specific camera body. Hope that helps!
Yep exactly. It’s the tilta hand grip, you can buy it separately and it’s $12 from BH. Fits to most smallrig cages
@@chrisbrockhurst Thanks man!
@@alvinlax Appreciate it. Ordered it just now :)
Noob question: would this be useful adjusting zoom on a zoom lens?
Yes it would be felix !
definitely would
@@melwinsam007 Thanks!
@@chrisbrockhurst Thanks!
what cinema lens is that ?? Saludos desde Spain😚
Meike 35mm FF Cine Lens.
Where did u get those lens caps? I need them so bad!
Kondoor Blue Cine caps
Discontinued :(
Can you put the follow focus on the other side if you wanted to?
you can see the base post also can be released.
Yep!
@@chrisbrockhurst thanks
I would rather use it for zoom
That works too
I dont want a cage though 😮💨
"m-kay"
Hello! I was wondering, is there a good reference website for different camera cage sizes? I received a smallrig follow focus for Christmas and didn't realize I needed a cage to use it!
I have a Sony A7II, and I can't figure out if it has a compatible exterior to use an A7S cage.
Thank you for your help :)
