At topaz mountain you can pay about $600 to have them blast fresh rock at a private claim and be able to take anything you find in it. But you can honestly just walk the runoff beds coming down the mountain and find gorgeous sun-bleached topaz crystals.

About the bananas. Every time someone brings up Potassium, i reminds me of the time when I was at Reed, and a bunch of atomophobs convinced the student body to ban all radioactive materials from all student accessible areas.
The Dean put myself and a few other students in charge of presenting a counter argument to their claims. My strategy was what I called the “Ben Franklin” approach.
I let them have there way, then rigorously enforced the rule the rules, without mercy or exception.
I had the class members who pressed this rule bagged up and taken away by the cities hazmat team. When they protested, i listed off every radioactive element in their body, that they would die without.
Benjamin Franklin sad “The true test of a laws merit, is it rigorous and impartial enforcement. Especially upon those who enacted it.”

Another mineral found there is Utahite
Utahite is an extremely rare secondary copper zinc tellurate mineral found as a product of oxidation. Its chemical formula is Cu₅Zn₃(Te⁶⁺O₄)₄(OH)₈•7H₂O. It was first described in 1997 for an occurrence in the Centennial Eureka mine, one mile southeast of Eureka, Tintic District, Juab County, Utah, US

i find it funny that they didn't like the name bixbite for being easy to confuse with bixbyite but then they let utahite slide when a synonym for variscite is utahLITE. not confusing at all
they did a pretty bad job naming this mineral btw, but at least it's not eurekadumpite, that one hurts to say

@@braintwo3398 i live in romania and our country has many tellurate and telluride minerals... all rare but they're often black/silvery microcrystals that are very aesthetically unappealing (at least to me) it's more the tellurates that look better but it's often bc they have copper and that makes them blue or green. agaite for example is a really deep blue green color but again, it's the copper

So I'm shocked to watch this video and not have you mentioned dugway geobeds where people can just go out there and search for very interesting geodes that can fluoresce and more important the septarian dragon eggs that can be found in utah. These dragon eggs are by far some of the coolest gems you can find.

That last fact about Topaz being Utah's state gemstone reminded me of my current state, whos gemstone is Black Coral. And while olovine, peridot, and obsidian can be found here there really isnt any dedicated gem excavations. Pearl's and dead coral are just easier to find and or synthesize. And people are more interested in the beaches anyways.

I earned both of my degrees in geology in Utah. On different field trips, I visited both the Topaz Mountain and the red beryl mine. Unfortunately, at the time of my trip to the red beryl mine, the owners were in negotiations to sell it. So, we were not allowed to actually go in. The owners of the mine used to let students from my school go in on occasion and collect samples. Anything under a certain size that they found they were allowed to keep. Over that size and they had to turn it in to the mine owner who would then pay the a finder's fee for the crystal.
I did manage to collect quite a few topaz crystals on my visit to Topaz Mountain. Unfortunately, I don't know what became of those samples. 😞

if you ever do an episode on Texas then PLEASE bring a specimen of chambersite. it's one of my favorite minerals, but getting ahold of one might be hard. they are very rare and very hard to obtain too - you have to go as deep as 70 ft below the surface to get a chance of obtaining a single crystal!

I'm not sure if I buy the whole 1 ton of ore Rhyolite to find a single carat Gem. That sounds great on paper, but it has no accounting for geological processes or luck. Maybe just a better way of stating this is that the Red Beryl production zone is buried under the ground, as opposed to the mine on Mt. Antero Colorado where the stones are at the tippy top of the mountain and just waiting for people to come brush the surface off to find them. This sounds far more difficult as you would have to dig through a dickload of Rhyolite to find them. Btw, Rhyolite has hardness 6 on the mohs scale, which makes it technically more scratch resistant than Steel. However, Steel has a much more tight molecular bond, so it is still possible to penetrate, but requires much more force, XD no wonder there aren't any Red Beryls, nobody wants to pay millions of dollars to mine them.
