I really appreciate you guys making these beginner videos. Can’t wait to get my first tank
Thank you Ryan and Bulk Reef Supply for all the info you give us. You are my 1st choice to look for reefing information. Awesome job!
Great quick video. No doubt there is nothing better that outstanding husbandry. One of the best tools I've invested in is "The Flipper" glass cleaner. For a well established tank I can say Vibrant has been an amazing little edition to the arsenal. Used properly and for it's intentions Vibrant is a must have...
got a flipper was a real pain in the @ flipping it , Until I seen you flip it over using the corner of the glass...its these little tips that help reefers ..thanks BRS
Ryan is the reef hero we need
Looking fit and trim bro! Nice video.
Good job Ryan BTW you were great in Fast times at Ridgemont High.
Once a week. I aim powerheads to swirl glass. Works awesome. Old school
you mean - extend the time between cleanings?
Of course not! All hobbyists want to REDUCE the amount of time between cleanings. We love cleaning glass, don't you?? xD
Ever check that green algae film? Look at it closely. Tangs and blennies love it. When scraping they also go crazy swooping in to pick up pieces. So it’s a good and bad scenario.
Great video! Any suggestions for cleaning a bowfront?
Unfortunately I’ve had two flippers and both scratch on the blade side. I’ve found using a credit/gift card is my go to for cleaning without scratching
And what about getting those silicone seals? Gunk climbs up under them. Dont want to disturb those seals....
If you're seeing build up under the silicone seals, that would indicate that the seam is starting to peal back. Not good! For cleaning the silicone, I like to use an ultra soft brush, or even better, one of these pads: www.bulkreefsupply.com/6-pack-sparkly-sponge-cleaning-pads-hydra-aquatics.html
Would Microbacter 7 be the same as the start product?
Are there any fish or bacteria that would have a negative effect on the purple alge for the rocks? I love the purple and would hate for the bacteria to effect that.
You may notice products like Vibrant to have a negative impact on Coralline algae growth, but a vast majority of bacterial supplements will not be an issue. Fish are also not a threat to Coralline in any meaningful way.
I get too many scratches from the flipper :'( Can you recommend an alternative that is just as effective?
Not cheap, but the Algae Free brand of magnet cleaners are one of our absolute favorites around here.

I have been dosing mb7 and vibrant everyday because I thought I still had dinos but yesterday I watch inappropriate reefer video and he was all excited saying he rid his dino problem and all that was left was the walls to clean from the bacterial bloom caused by the treatment! The close up of his wall looked just like mine. Greenish/red film randomly with some fuzzy white with random bubbles! Well a bell went off in my head and I turned all my whites on and blues off. My sand bed is sugar white and my rocks have a fuzzyness to them. I got to thinking maybe I got rid of the dinos and am experiencing a bacterial bloom from the dosing also added 2 low watt uvs in my sump! I am not sure what to do or what is going on! I have been experiencing coral deaths and since my walls and wavemaker looked so bad I thought I still had dinos. What could this be? I am thinking of discontinuing dosing except maybe here and there, cleaning walls and water change and see what happens. Maybe the coral deaths were from tuning down lights or something else or can bacterial blooms cause them to die?
I get a purple dusty algae film on my glass every single day, it takes just few hours to reappear after scraping, any ideas how to get rid of this? Thanks
One thing that I've had good luck with is dosing live phytoplankton. Not only does live phyto help feed the corals in the tank naturally, but most blends are able to reproduce in a reef environment, so they act as great mini scavengers. Other reefers have had good luck adding a UV sterilizer to their setup.
What wavemaker is that at 0:38? Seems very low profile and not Ecotech.
It's actually an MP10 with one of the aftermarket Niche3D wet side upgrades 🙂

Would the bacteria reproduce in fresh water so you can keep them in your fresh water ATO?
Not without adding a food source. That's undesirable on a variety of fronts :)
Oh no, food! ☹️
what about the outside of the glass?
A spray bottle with the Tunze Care Panes or RODI water, plus one of these cloths are my favorite ways to keep the outside of the tank glass looking clean

3:20 - as his hands get wet....
haha 😜
Well he said ARMS 🤷🏻♀️
The later? I think you meant the latter? Oh you silly Minnesotans. LOL
You say tomato, I say tomato...ok, maybe you're right ... 😂
If one has to buy all this stuff, just to save on synthetic salt, then am better off changing 25% water every week 😑😑😑
Oh boi am I ready to spend 60$ on a razorblade and a magnet instead of a decent nano light for around the same price
Definitely not a requirement by any means. For some smaller tanks, the $25 Flipper Nano is an excellent choice though 🙂
