Thankful for this video and this series! I only have experience with freshwater and know dirt about salt 😭. Having these quick, simplified explanations makes everything less overwhelming.
When you make a water change or top off should the water be the same temperature as the aquarium? If so, do you keep a heater on in the bins at all times?
Warmer temps could affect salinity and potentially promote bacterial growth within your saltwater storage container. That said, storing freshwater in your garage should not be an issue.
Hi, I’m new to saltwater tank, but I have experience with discus breeding. Usually when I was making r/o water is was at 5-10 ppm, which is very low. So I was using normal (dechlorinated) water 55% and 45% r/o water and it was coming somewhere around 60-70 ppm. So the question is do I need to do something same for the saltwater tank or just use the r/o water.
We use RODI water at 0 TDS because a lot of the minerals, major elements, and trace elements are added back into the water when we mix in the salt. Once the salt is mixed, we don't pay attention to TDS, but rather, we test for specific gravity or ppt salinity.
Making RODI water is actually really simple with one of our RODI systems. The 4 stage system is probably our most popular option. Below is a great video on this particular system as well as info on how to hook it up and get started making RODI water. ua-cam.com/video/3re1-gAdAEY/v-deo.html
Wish the TM Pro Alk. was higher Sure would be cornvenient . Wouldn't it be nice to maintain perimeters through auto water changes ? Makes me consider fritz salt . Don't need to add Alk right away . What do you think ?
Since most of us do manual water changes, we usually try to pick a salt somewhat close to the parameters that we're keeping our tank at. An alkalinity of 8 is pretty common, so if you think about it, the Tropic Marin alk isn't actually THAT low :)
Most tap water will contain contaminants and other unwanted things like chlorine or chloramines. For that reason, we always recommend starting with RO or RODI water. Remember, the water in your aquarium will never be better than the water you start with 😀
The best way to approach this is with little amounts of water at a time. Try removing a 1/4 gal of tank water and replacing with a 1/4gal RODI water until you reach your target salinity. Test after each replacement so you don't go too far.
@@BRStv oh no i'm wondering about mixed saltwater and how to take it down i was assuming there was a calculator for that. i couldn't find any which means my marked 1 gallon bottle i got for such things is wasted now hehe :( but nice to know if tank salinity goes high then take some water out and replace with fresh rodi water
Every reefer does it a little differently. Some reefers like to do more frequent, but smaller water changes. Others will do less frequent, but larger water changes. Generally speaking, every other week seems to be pretty normal.
I really don't want to sound like a person that is hasty, but mixing 30L for only two hours isn't enough? I am only asking because I am filling for the first time a 200L tank, and I only have a 30L bucket, a single one, and I don't have an automatic RO/DI unit, I have to manually operate it, and I occupy a lot of living space, Europe mostly has apartments, so I will have to do this at least 6 times to fill the tank, I was wondering if I could mix the solution for one hour or two, untill it looks clear, otherwise it will take me an eternety!
Assuming that your tank doesn't have any livestock in it, you can always start mixing in your mixing container and then continue mixing in your main display with a powerhead, if needed.
I feel terrible, I was shown to mix it in the jug I'm using for water changes each time amd pouring it into the tank one time and thought that was normal, I've had my saltwater tank for almost a year and corals/fish are doing amazing I'm super confused but also hurt. am I hurting them by doing this ? I won't be doing it again I would like to know of this has been causing them harm and what kind of harm :((((!!
While your process might not be ideal, the biggest thing is making sure that the salt is fully dissolved before adding to the aquarium. If you're doing that, there probably isn't much, if any, harm done.
So I just got a tds sensor. I tested my ro at 0 tds. Out of curiosity I then mixed the same water with my salt and tested it and it read over 600. I’m new to testing tds but how is this possible?
Out of the many places (non local lfs none in my area or even close to sell rodi water and my water bill is high enough as it is every gallon of rodi water wastes 3 to 4 gallons of water) I’ve bought rodi water have I ever got a zero tds reading.
If a large volume of water we would bring this to the temperature of your tank to avoid having too large of a temp swing. If doing small water changes this is likely not enough to cause a problem. Water temperature can change salinity levels, so test the water to make sure you are within range.

The usage of terms like “pharmaceutical grade” is beyond incorrect. Not even state board of pharmacies can currently define “pharmaceutical grade” raw material. Issue in the industry that is currently at the legal level. Funny to sit back and see it in the reef world.
i feel like we are walking backwards with the latest 5-min series. I have liked BRS videos because they answer questions that other vendors wouldn't take the time and resources to do. How many videos are there on the internet regarding how-to-guide on mix salt and water? dime in a dozen i would say. instead of making videos that are prevalent and common, BRS should focus on other topics that other vendors wouldn't even dare to undertake. what's next? how to read a refractometer and why salinity is important to a reef tank? how about a side by side comparison between KH director and Trident?
I think that this series is really good for beginners. When I started reefing I was super overwhelmed watching all of these fairly complicated and long videos, and I wish I would've had these 5 minute videos to quickly get me started. Besides, they're still continuing to release BRS Investigates videos and the Dream Tank videos simultaneously.
I’ve been mixing salt for years but still like these videos. I’m always looking for diff tips to keep my tank healthy and stay up on the latest products and techniques since the hobby is always progressing I like to stay on top of it all. Besides, if I’m not interested in a certain video, I can easily chose to not watch it. :]
Thankfully for more advanced reefers like you, we still have our BRStv Investigates as well as the BRS360 videos being released going forward. No doubt, this video series is a basic crash course on how to get started for beginners and won't apply to all BRStv viewers 🙂

Is it safe to store the water in a garage? Freezing is not a problem but warmer temp is. Florida

Brute trashcans are everything
How would you clean out the brute can prior to filling with RODI water?
You clean it with RODI water
@@davidbatzos9416 use vinegar instead, if you bleach you need to rinse and test for chlorine in the water once you fill it
If it's brand new, a thorough rinse with RODI should do the trick :D
Vinegar and then wipe it down with rubbing alcohol. Gets any oils out

Your narrative is for advanced level people as many of the terminologies you have used are unfamiliar with the beginners.

TDS meters read off of conductivity, so once you add salt mix to the water, it'll be sky high. TDS readings have very little value once salt is added.

Nope, many reefers do it that way. You may just have to clean the glass a little bit after you're done mixing
