History - The Tangara (Sydney Trains)

- The Tangaras (also known as the T set) are a type of train operated by Sydney Trains, as well as NSW TrainLink for intercity services on the South Coast Line. This video details their history since they entered service in 1988.
My 4 year old Grandson loves the various videos about Sydney trains. He will sit and watch for ages. I like the music, much better than listening to Wiggles etc. Every time we catch a train, he shares some little “gems of wisdom” he has picked up watching the trains on your site. Thank you for making one little boy very happy.
Thank you for that really heartening comment. I'm glad I've been able to give him something to be cheerful about. God Bless!

Deb Mawson aww, that’s a heartwarming story
Great music from the era of the introduction of the Tangara. They were certainly very different from what we were used to.
I still remember catching the train to school back in 1988.
The 8:00am train was a old Red Ratler with no heating or AC and where you could hang out the doors, followed by the 8:05 Tangara that was like a space shuttle in comparison...what a contrast!
Haha, I bet!
Really appreciated the fresh air of a red rattler. Especially during hot summer days.
Still at school in 1988!!!! I agree that the Tangara was ahead of the red rattlers - in their day they had been ahead of the wooden carriages still around when I was at school and for some years after. But the Tangara was a move back from the C class, with air-conditioning and comfortable, reversible seats
@@graemedurie9094
Yep I was in 5th grade in 88.
That makes me....
My god, I'm middle aged!
Ooops, that should have been K class
From a commuter's perspective, the Tangara had 2 major failings, both deliberate. The first was the fixed seating, so that half of those in the carriage (except the platform level vestibule areas) faced backwards with no hope of changing it. The other was the material from which the windows were built. This rapidly lost transparency and became clouded. It is next to impossible to see out save at night. Then there was the less serious ones of a poor loudspeaker system and the complete lack of signs.
Otherwise, thanks for another excellent video.
DoubleDee thanks! Thats true, those windows can get really annoying
@@sydneyrailbuff That's because they're double glazed. If you threw a rock at the windows, the outside one would break, but the inner one would keep all the passengers safe. The Tangaras are the only one to feature this in Sydney.
@@griffinrails Useful! Still most people don't know that and personally I'd prefer windows that you can properly see through
I think most do change around now
@@Danielle-xs5cz A lot of train commuters in Sydney prefer seats that can be flipped. That's why Waratahs are popular with them.
Tangara’s design is timeless. They still look new next to Waratahs.
What About The Screen? Tangaras Don’t Have Screens
I agree but the seats are not movable
@@morriscruz8689 Some Tangara sets do have movable seat but not all of them. I think it was mainly on the Ex-G sets that had them
@@myatzawko9656Yeah I think they do have destination boards but they don't use them. That makes the Tangaras the only trains in the Sydney Trains Fleet to not use destination boards even though they have them equipped.
I agree with the other comments that the Tangaras have aged quite well. The wedge/slab front looks a little dated perhaps, but ok. Actually when you think of it, the Millennium and Waratah trains look about the same, with more modern "faces", but they've lost the Tangara's groovy upper deck wrap around HUGE windows, love 'em!
I remember going to see and walking through the dummy Tangara carriage at the Royal Easter Show in 1988 (or 1987?) ahead of their introduction into service. At the time it may as well have been the space shutte it seemed so futuristic. For a little kid, it was always a thrill to see one coming at the station and then riding them for the first time!
I really preferred the original grey livery of the Tangaras when they were first introduced. The all grey / glass Tangaras made them look so futuristic. The yellow front and doors makes them look a bit silly, not that I don't understand why they do it.
I definitely see where you're coming from! Nothing beats that metallic look
UnexplosiveRailfan Not to mention those pin stripes. I also liked how back in the day there was a glass panel over the “Tangara” signage. Pretty sure they took them all off.
Old Aussie Ads I’m certain that the reason why they gained that yellow paint job was for visibility reasons, as yellow is a colour that’s brighter and easier to see.
@@nicholetheotter1957 Agreed.
Yeah 100% they looked so much better before all that yellow was adopted.
Double the trains in Sydney Cityrail because Cityrail nostalgia
Tangaras seriously need to have functional and visible destination boards on the ends of each set. They also require electronic screens inside each carriage on both decks, as well as at ends of each carriage to inform passengers of the stations the train will stop at, as well as the next and current stations.
Gene Zou Sydney Trains have plans to install new features like that on the Tangara fleet. There are two sets (T106, T72) that have been undergoing these upgrades to have new information screens and digital voice announcements on the inside, much like the M, H, A and B sets. They also have plans to upgrade the destination indicators on the front as well, as the current ones haven't really been used for years due to dim lighting. CCTV cameras will also be installed, much like those other trains have. The project has just been taking much longer than it was first intended to be. I did see T106 and T72 when passing the UGL Unipart aka Maintrain at Auburn, and they had "train under test" signs, yet I'm not sure what's going on.
I don't see how this'd be a problem. I mean, trains aren't taxis; each train goes through a number of stops in a sequential order, each day, every day. If you know which stop you want, and which stop comes before it, then you should be able to figure it out just by looking out the window at each station. It's not hard.
this is very well made, the song really suits and all the footage brings back so many memories
My dad help make the tangara steel panels on these trains
Jeremiah's Transport Photography Impressive!
Did he make the new lightweight doors?
I know this sounds a bit silly but
Eh
Dethuponian Productions No only the steel panels
Steel panels, as in the infamous ones on the old doors?
Christopher Menon No the steel panels for the steel frame (him and his friend build them and his friend has a steel company)
The original Tangaras had the most uncomfortable seats ever put into a Sydney train.
Great video! Definitely keen to see one on the V sets and suburban silver sets as well...:)
I remember when the Tangaras were introduced. Was catching them to the city and they certainly made everything else look old in comparison. Also remember that while the wrapover windows looked cool, they most definitely weren't in summer and people would avoid the sunny side of the train or go downstairs. Also, the incessant squeaking of the inter-carriage connections was really annoying (until someone found a fix).
I know what you mean about the squeaking but I really miss it. It was a part of my teen years when I started catching trains by myself.
wavecentral Ah yes, I do feel that while the windows are cool and are a design that is unique to T sets, it's not so fun when there's glare about. Whenever I notice obvious sun glare, I usually tend to go to the bottom deck just to avoid the glare. And also, those Tangara guard announcements are not the most audible, especially when you have like almost everything else using digitally enhanced voices.
Cool insight on the Tangara! I love how epic the advertisement makes it look. ❤
Can see a whole lot of "bucket" comments I certainly agree with. Another argument for Tangara was the saving in cost because of the "fixed" seating. We recently copped a Tangara, my wife in her power chair, (that was ok) BUT myself with a walker and the dumb Strathfield staffer put us in one of the driver's sections that had NO SEATING! I was required to ride to Hornsby on my walker which is NOT SAFE AND NOT ALLOWED!
Today 20/10/2021 has a derailment at Wollongong and Kemble Grnge Rceourse
Tangara Set 20 was the first Tangara in service
Fantastic History!
Wonderful work there Sydney rail buff And great pick of song much prefer 80s and 70s and 60s music than the new stuff
this is my fave train and apart of my childhood
How many T sets were there?
I love city rail and Sydney trains I thought it doesn’t snow in Australia but in the Blue Mountains it does
That is correct!
I love the opening of this video & the choice of music, it’s beautiful, absolutely amazing mate. My love for Tangaras as no boundaries, I grew up on these young ladies. ❤️❤️❤️
I Love The oscar Sets And Tangara sets
They are nice
Same
Fun Fact: Tangara were the first slamming doors set
How come when the Tangara Trains will complete in 2019?
Their technology upgrade to be in line with modern trains
Tangara train are best train ever better than v set.
DeltaGamer64 One Tangara set (T106) is undergoing an major upgrade to test out new features that will help bring up to the same standard as the newer trains such as Millennium M sets, Oscar H sets, and both A and B Waratah sets. Upgrading the existing Tangara fleet will also help the T4 Eastern Suburbs/Illawarra line which currently isn’t capable of running the Waratah A and B sets. That’s why you see Waratahs everywhere except for the T4 line. If T106’s project ends up being successful, they will then start rapidly rolling out the new features on the rest of the Tangara fleet (like what happened with the new M set styled doors after T96 successfully trialled them in 2014).
the tangara's shake violently when going over spur lines.
What are spur lines?
@@treypohe4593 idek just assumed they were bumps on rails. Or like the gap at the part where trains change rails
Jonathan Ng oh ok.
Had no idea these trains were so old, as the refurbishment definitely fades the 80s aesthetic.
Do they still have old tangaras running on sydney lines? There's a double decker style train that runs late sometimes (I'm from past kiama so excuse the lack of train-line names) that definitely has that 80s aesthetic, and looks similar to the pre-refurb tangaras from what I can make out.
Yeah there all over the cronulla line now
To me they looked like they came out in 1996
I remember being an excited 16 year old when the Tangaras first rolled out. They looked so futuristic at the time, and I loved the extended upper deck windows, and the most exciting thing was air conditioning, perfect for those long summer trips into the city on the, now, T8 line, then called the East Hills line.
the Tangaras are my favourite trains in the fleet
They tried them in Victoria... did not work out well.. we scrapped ours...
That's briefly mentioned in this video
@@sydneyrailbuff Thats WTFV to me then!
@@hypercomms2001 Haha!
those were more similar to the G sets that would come very soon.
But why would you have 3D shapes, *WHEN YOU CAN HAVE 4D*

Wow they have has a big facelift
When i visited Sydney, I rode on a Tangara and I thought it was the newest fleet in Sydney....
Haha! They were certainly ahead of their time
I forgot everything about trains because I stopped watching this channel for like a year
Those curved upper deck windows make it feel bright and spacious on the upper deck. I still prefer it to the newer units. It's a shame they couldn't make them work in Melbourne.
There are very similar windows on some of the DB inter-city trains - great for going through mountain and other scenic rail routes. They seem to be made of a much better material than the Tangara plastic, and don't discolour.
Melbourne never wanted to be perceived to be copying Sydney. So they never really tried to fix the problems.
M sets?
I'll do it some time. I am planning to the entire Sydney fleet done. This includes the Red Rattlers, which I have done, and the intercity V sets.
He's now done it
Sorry for being a bit late
The Tangaras were actually once gonna be called M sets due to the L sets at the time already being called T sets
I love trains 🤩
Same.
Make a history of Central station
when will a v set history come?
I'm planning on doing it soon
Didnt you already do one?
This is the story of how a2 was retired so it was on The Epping to Chatswood rail link while it was closed to make the Metro and crashed into the tunnel Borer

What's the maximum speed of the tragara?
Maybe that’s how g7 crashed into a brick wall
It went over the speed limit on the curve
And the driver had a heart attack and the guard fell into a micro sleep
@@dangleoof6944 no im pretty sure it was because of a faulty dead mans switch
Most likely 115 K/MH
They should’ve made more tangara’s over Waratahs
You missed the incident involving the scrapping of g7
I decided it wasn't relevant enough, it's just a brief history of the train type after all
That's a G set. This is a video on T Sets
Transperth 4567 Ah yes, the 2003 crash at Waterfall.
griffin rails However, the G sets were later retooled into suburban T sets after the introduction of the new outer-suburban H set (Oscars). The former G set Tangaras were all renumbered in the process, and had the toilets removed, though the luggage racks and reversible seating stayed intact.
Unixplosiverailfan you know you you did trains in Tasmania can you do trains in Western Australia 🇦🇺
the wilsons I did know
Uh
Thanks for this informative video.
Is there a website where the history and features of all the different models are compiled? I’m a fan of Sydney trains and watching all the Sydney train channels on UA-cam can be quite confusing when differentiating between the different sets.
Thanks for your comment.

The SRA Tangara was NEVER the G Set, I was on the testing of the original Tangara and it was ALWAYS the "T" set..
There were plans to call them M sets though very early on in designing due to the L sets being called T sets back then before the Tangaras
Also the G sets were made in 1994, of course they would not be from the SRA
love it
Hey sydrailfan I got a s set model train and it moves!
What Train Is First
There has been tales tangaras will be withdrawn from service in 2020
Tangaras are likely to last for another 10 years (at the absolute bare minimum) because they're relatively modern and they wouldn't upgrade the tangaras for an extra year of service.
The Wilson's they are being upgraded and finished by 2019/2020
Sydney Trains info vids Actually, there are planned upgrades to make them more in line with the newer sets, such as CCTV cameras, new controls and new indicator boards being installed. One set is currently undergoing an upgrade to test the new features before they get approved for the rest to be fitted with, in order to ensure the Tangara’s longevity.
Why didnt you mention they used to run on sector 2 (T2,T3,T8)
Good question; most set types move all over the network during their time in service, so I didn't think it was worthwhile.
Tango 👑
The interior of these seems quite old and dirty. Especially the windows which are always blurry and white. They don't have display screens either. I also don't like the seats because you can't move them.
Look, i know I'm being picky here but I feel like these trains are behind in the infrastructure world.
The EX G-sets, or as I like to call them T1-sets are the Tangaras you need to look for.
Sadly, they are only on the Illawarra.
But they have flip seats!
They're sort of like the Illawarras Suburban Oscar :)
Dethuponian Productions ahhh i see
Most of the T sets i go on seem fine and they’re also adding display screens(apparently)
Llama Recreated Gaming I really hope so because it doesn't seem like it at all
