The real benefit of Ukraine going into Russia is that the EU countries see that they can win with their support. This should help keep a strong defense posture once the current war is over.

Not exactly winning, and EU countries probably do not have enough war materials and equipment to propel Ukraine to victory. If however, Ukraine can keep up or repeat this type of maneuver warfare, they could win with additional US support.

There is no "real" benefit. There is a LARGE number of MAJOR benefits, and which one eventually turns out to have been the most impoirtant depends on the further course of the war. (They didn't just "go into Russia", but did so at a very specific point, which provided some more subtle but still powerful advantages. Such as the ability to have Putin cut off the gas supply to his allies in EU/NATO just as winter comes, by trashing the metering station at Sudzha in an attempt to "liberate" it.)

Think of this: in the year 2000 a young Russian girl gave birth to her first child, one of the first of the millennium, born to an unwritten but hopeful future for Russia with a young democracy sprouting its wings. That same year Putin became president. Fast forward 24 years and that Russian woman has lost her baby fighting in Putin's war. As have so many others. Her child died as did democracy and hope for Russia. Putin has been a murderer most of his life. He's now created a generation of murderers and grieving mothers and fathers. Russia deserves better than a corrupt KGB dictator.

Trump for all his flaws was right for wanting NATO nations to fully adhere to the defense spending policy. Most were complacent.
Now, Ukraine “loses”, I fully expect them to take their own defense more serious but I also expect Russia to no longer be a threat militarily. Ukraine has already put a huge dent in their capabilities. Kyiv isn’t even a realistic option anymore. Easter and southern Ukraine, even if they manage to keep them, can they actually rebuild them?

However when numbers are released then yes, the US is the biggest contributor because they are published by country BUT the US is one country, the EU are several. Also where US support is mainly military aid, the EU provides a lot more humanitarian and direct financial aid.

I wish someone would ask Ben Hodges how he explains people like Jeffrey Sachs and John Mearsheimer who never have anything positive to say about Ukraine's fighting efforts. Based on their arguments Britain had no hope of survival in 1939-1940, because Germany had seemingly overwhelming military power. Nor would they, apparently, have believed the American colonies could have defeated Great Britain, the world's greatest power in 1777.

Slava Ukraini! Ben Hodges always is a win. But: What is also of interest, is, that Oblasts Kursk and Belgorod are the agrocultural hubs of Russia. And in Kursk alone, 50% of the steel in Russia is processed. I wonder, why nobody mentioned this, so far. It could be also one of the reasons, why Ukraine went in there.

Thank you for your honest analysis that the West has not helped Ukraine to win. The West has given Ukraine just enough to stay in the fight...enough to prolong the fight. Many of us were asking this question two years ago, and it is still relevant today: how many more Ukrainians, military and civilian, have to die and/or be displaced and/or endure crippling hardship before we help them to win this war? It seems the only people helped by prolonged conflicts are the ones involved in the manufacture or trafficking of weapons and ammunition.

We shall see by the end of the month how Ukraine fares in the Kursk region. Meanwhile US airlines have been cancelling flights to Asia and India (2 most populous regions in the world), Intel laid off 15,000 workers, US over $36Trillion in debt, US Navy can't safeguard the Red Sea, US Army has not won a war since WWII though Russia did most of the heavy lifting there. So not exactly a bed of roses in America is it Gen Hodges?
