Years ago, a fellow English teacher had pointed out to me this pronunciation of clothes that is different from KLOAZ. It led me to think that clothes might have been - etymologically speaking in its history - the plural of CLOTH. As a culture evolves, so does its language!!
Thanx super helpfull 🙂
Thanks for watching!
Thank you teacher
Thanks for watching!
Hey, Christine! May I ask what verb is better to use with the word clothes? My clothes is or my clothes are? Or it depends just on the context and both of them are right. Thank you 🙏
Hi - use "clothes are." We can say "clothing is" but never "clothes is."
@@SpeechModification thank you so much 😊
Born and raised in the US and I came here at 42 years of age to figure out if I was wrong. I say “close”. It’s hard to say it with the TH. Lord thank you.
I say "close" too, at least some of the time. I think many native speakers do, because "clothes" is just so tough to say.
hi there. is there any app or sth like that which i can use to check my pronunciation? i mean sth which record my pronunciation and then tells me how my pronuncitiaon is correct.
There are a number of apps like this, but most are pretty flawed. The best one I've found is actually using google - they have a feature now when you search the pronunciation of a word where you can click a button that says "practice" and it will give you feedback. I also suggest learning how to listen to a recording of yourself and listen for specific accent patterns, because when you can hear it yourself, you can correct it more easily. I teach you how to do that in my SMART online courses. courses.speechmodification.com/courses/6week

Hi coach,I want to ask you how to pronounce the word 'scroll',because It has 's' 'k' 'r' consonant cluster. Thank you
Good suggestion, I'll add it to the list and cover it in a future class.
Hi, I'll be covering your word tomorrow: ua-cam.com/video/7WHsPFC1cMk/v-deo.html
Hi! from Japan.Thank you as always for your help.
I am wondering about the pronunciation of "thes" in "clothes".
I have heard that when pronouncing its "thes", the tongue is pulled back from
between the upper and lower front teeth to make the "z" sound. Is that correct?
To me "clothes" and "close" sound completely different.
You are correct that "clothes" and "close" do not sound the same, but what I explain in this video is that in fluent speech, we often simply drop the TH ð in the word "clothes" and use just the /z/ instead, because the thz sound is difficult. So my advice to non-native speakers is that if it's challenging to say "clothes" with both ending sounds, you can just say "close" instead.

Thank you from Japan. I understood what you said in your lecture and in your comments . So, am I correct in my initial comment about the tongue movement in pronouncing the word "clothes" correctly?
I see, sorry to repeat what you already knew. In terms of the placement of the "thes" /ðz/ version of the pronunciation, we still need the tongue between the teeth to create the TH /ð/, and then it pulls back for the /z/ to behind the teeth. If we just did it behind the teeth it would sound like only the /z/ sound. I talk about thz word pronunciation in this video: ua-cam.com/video/gH0jruubiqw/v-deo.html and ths (same movements) in this video: ua-cam.com/video/ridIoj6yabE/v-deo.html@@NokazeKaioumaru

I have finished watching those two videos you showed.

Can I kindly request you to help me pronounce Excel and excel? Thanks

@@SpeechModification Thanks a lot

Hi Rima, I covered your word today: ua-cam.com/video/VCuy4zAPH34/v-deo.html
Its important that you pronounce the th or you're not speaking correct English. American English is often so wrong in many of its pronunciations and Clothes is a classic example of one of those words.
How about The, Thief and Thieves?
I dont know if it’s because I’m a Portuguese speaker, I can’t pronounce “th” even when I slow down.
Thanks for the sound lesson on clothes.
Some English sounds are difficult to mimic
Hi, yes, TH is challenging, and your native language definitely affects which sounds are more difficult for you. Here's a resources for understanding what Portuguese speakers may struggle with: www.speechmodification.com/store/p35/Overview_of_Accent%3A__Native_Portuguese_Speakers.html
Here's a video for "th" in general: ua-cam.com/video/UudCgpMubF0/v-deo.html
I also have a free ebook with videos about "the" and th: www.speechmodification.com/store/p85/ebook.html
I can cover thief and thieves in a future class.
Hi, I'm covering your words tomorrow: ua-cam.com/video/a1lUKrZw_lM/v-deo.html
I would like to let you know that the sound quality is not good. No matter how high I made the volume still it was hard to hear you.
Thanks for the feedback, I have corrected this issue since this video was made. Perhaps I will do a remake of this video, my apologies that it was too quiet.
