Alright, what people need to understand about these "lost levels" is this, (Will be further updated in response to others. And yes lots of research went into finding all of this) All this gameplay is from sonic 2 , long version, a fan rom hack from 2004. *wood zone: sonic 2 (1992) was going to have time travel, later used in sonic cd (1993). so wood zone was the past version of casino night, NOT metropolis like many people think. only the first 10 seconds are "real" in the beta, everything else, fan made. so we never actually get to play wood zone, except for the 10 seconds of it in the beta, again the artwork is real, but it was never finished. this is the one zone, that was never completed. *genocide city: this basically became metropolis zone act 3. game play wise, it was reused for act 3. background theme wise, look at the machine level, from sonic spin ball (1993) that is what genocide zone would have looked like. the artist confirmed it himself. ALL OF THIS GENOCIDE CITY THAT U SEE, IS FAN MADE. so it got divided, metropolis act 3 is the game play, the machine level in spin ball, is the artwork for it. We don't really know why sega changed it. maybe the name genocide city made sega cut the name out , and turn it into metropolis act 3 instead. It was also called cyber city at one point. *Hidden palace: later completed in the sonic 2 mobile version (2013) you can also play the original incomplete version if u like which is also in the sonic 2 beta. most of this is fan made in this video, but it looks identical to what it would have been like. the point of this level was for sonic to go super sonic, upon going super sonic, the music would switch from mystic cave act 2, to this track 10 song. all this was of course cut. and only parts of it remained in the beta. sonic simply goes super sonic after collecting all 7 emeralds with no explanation given in the game. *dust hill: only existed in one magazine ad for the game. a mock up drawing if anything. from what i can tell, there never was a dust hill level to actually play. sonic mania (2017) made the level real for the first time, mirage saloon. They were planning to bring this level back initially in sonic cd, desert dazzle, but that was scrapped. *death egg: never existed. this is just fan made. We play in death egg zone in sonic and knuckles (1994) anyway so. sonic 2, just has the 2 bosses back to back, no death egg zone. People just assume because there are no rings in the final level, that maybe a zone was cut. There is no proof sega cut any level here. that is the full story behind these.
it's kinda cool that someone restored chemical plant zone . For anyone unaware, chemical plant was supposed to be death egg zone, which is why act two has some really bullshit sections.
I remember playing through Chemical Plant Zone as a kid thinking "this feels like it should be way later in the game", especially the flipping platforms just before the boss that almost always caught me off guard.
Genocide City Zone was supposed to be a single act, and was replaced with an extra Act for Metropolis City (which is why it's the only zone with 3 acts).
Wrong, in the 2013 re-release Hidden Palace Zone is "hidden" in a pit and it has one act and a boss. But since in the original it wasn't complete, they decided to give Metropolis Zone one more act.
As a kid listing to the Hidden Palace theme music in the sound test screen, it made my imagination run wild. We never knew where it was from in the game, since you never see a level where it's played. My friend Josh taught me about the level select screen and the debug code. I had so much fun with this game. Still one of the best ever made. Sonic 3 & Knuckles and it's epic story is my favorite game of all time I think.
@@Gacha_Nazrinofficial but for the proto palace you need to play those in sound test in order 01,09,09,02,01,01,02,04 and you should hear a ring chime Then after this play 03,03,03,0B,10,10,10,04 And you should hear another ring chime Then go to hidden palace and you will play the the original proto palace and not that one in the pit

Ok the Hidden Palace zone I played was way longer, had a different boss battle and used the music played in Dust Hill... Eggman played a big trombone that summoned spiked bombs that you had to dodge and avoid the explosions. Then he'd play again and a giant spiked bomb would fall, which you needed to bring under his vehicle in order to knock his vehicle down with the jet of water the explosion would make. Then you could hit him once or twice. If you tried to hit him any other time he'd dodge you by flying up. I actually found that to be the hardest boss battle in Sonic 2 because you really needed to pay attention to timing.
Boss of deleted zones Wood=Aquatic ruin Genocide city=Chemical plant Hidden palace=Mystic cave Dust hill=Emerald hill Bosses in deleted zones were similar of that levels but it was little difficult
Hidden palace zone looks pretty beautiful for the time. It perfectly simulates a 3D depth. A lot of effort gone into that zone by the artists, Truly a shame that all the effort was smashed into dust.
You're an idiot. It's emerald hill 2 player, not fucking wood zone! SONIC 2 LONG VERSION HAS BRAINWASHED YOU PEOPLE! Wood zone never used this music, it used metropolis zone's music.
This is my favorite Sonic game on Megadrive. I've finished it dozens of times and I'll play it again, everything is good in this game, the music, the atmosphere, the graphics, the fun.

Sonic 2 is not a 2015 game. The level was scrapped and made into a cybernetic level in Sonic Spinball AND Metropolis' Act 3. The stage on the actual game is unused garbage, just like Wood Zone (actual sonic 2) and Hidden Palace (actual sonic 2)
For those who don't know, This is a rom hack that is called Sonic 2: Long version. You may think this is a real game but it is a rom hack that you can play as Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. The link in in the description
Ugh... why can't Sega just continue these games properly? Sonic 4 tried but didn't capture the awesomeness of the classic games. Surely it can't be that hard or time consuming to make a Genesis/Mega Drive era-style game!
Aniket Bedade I know that. But with how much technology has advanced since the classic Sonic games, it's much easier to make a retro-style game that functions and plays just as well.
they just can't man. for whatever reason Sega had the magic touch back then. the controls, the music (especially sonic 3 wow) the atmosphere and the simpleness of these original sonic games is indeed too hard for sega to duplicate. sucks. I remember back in 1995 thinking sega would just continue to make sonic games just like this ....boy was I wrong lol I was living at the very end of sonics peak. he hit the peak too soon. Sonic sucks ass ever since.
firebat128 Genocide city is actually metropolis zone act 3 the developers thought the word genocide meant robot but they found out the true meaning of it and renamed it
Producers of Sonic 2 though that "GENOCIDE" was a cool word and used it. It was changed to CYBER city and GENOCIDE City got scrapped and never got used. Oh yeah and in the Japanesse version "GENOCIDE" city was named CYBER CITY. They also changed the name DUE TO the defintion of the word "Genocide" thank meh later
@@jenniferbarangan1502 they still used *death* egg tho... _genocide_ and *death* mean pretty much the same thing except *death* is the term used when or after someone dies, and genocide is used when someone commits murder and causes *death* and makes someone die
No. In the beta, Wood Zone is very unplayable without debug, Dust Hill is actually Mystic Cave in the beta, Genocide City is completely empty in the beta, and Hidden Palace was close to finished but Sega started removing Hidden Palace at Beta 4. The beta im talking about though is the Simon Wai prototype
I love how these scrapped zones have the themes of emarld Hill zone mystic cave zone and casino night zone from the multi-player mode of sonic 2 all except for hidden palace zone and death egg zone witch is literally just chemical plant zone but in space
0:00 chapter cuz IDK what to put it 0:05 wood zone act 2 2:47 genocide zone act 2 4:31 hidden Palace zone (is a literally official zone but it includes as the beta and prototype)
Call it a hunch but I'm guessing with the fact that these levels were basically near replicas of different zones and maybe some time and space management, these were cut. Well say for Hidden Palace and Death Egg.
All of these levels are fake. Some idiot must have heard the level name and jut stole a boss re-modeled it then made a stage based off of the name.. The only one that's real is Hidden Palace because its a secret in the mobile sonic 2 but even here it uses the un-used music but to be fair this was made before Sonic 2 Mobile. Either way these were not the original designs for the level. I bet the person who made the fake Genocide City dosent even know the backstory about its name.
ThunderboltGaming You don't even have evidence that it's fake, these are all unfinished levels that SEGA never implemented, and hidden palace was remade by Christian whitehead for the mobile port.
All of these levels were real. They never got released in the final game because of time constraints, difficulty, and other such obsticals. Dust Hill Zone closely represents what it was advertised for. I am not sure if Wood Zone is close or just a concept. I never knew that Death Egg Zone Act 1 existed until now. But Genocide City on the other hand is absolutely no where near the concept art SEGA had for it originally. They are very real zones. They were concepts for the original Sonic 2 but most of these are similar versions to what they could have been. And for the other "replyers," you don't need to attack them. Just correct them and move on with your day no one needs to get in to a cyber fight with someone they don't know.
Not actual beta of the game. Wood Zone is barely done in the betas,Dust Hill is a mockup screenshot,Winter Hill is not real,Genocide City is Metropolis' Act 3 AND Hidden Palace wasn't finished either
people that don’t understand this is actually a rom hack because if you use the level select code in sonic 2 it doesn’t show genocide wood or dust hill even if genocide zone was in the game it wouldn’t even look like this it would be a mechanical zone according to yuji naka so this isnt real genocide zone wouldnt even use chemical plants boss hidden palace was pieced together by scrap by fans and if you’ve played sonic 2 mobile you know this is mostly accurate so only hidden palace is a zone that would be used death egg is chemical plant with no water and the backround is space
Genocide city was big drop to death in sonic beta and one thing that keeps me questioning is if rom hack genocide city was actually what it was supposed to be if it was officially complete to sonic 2. It looks official from the level design and looks like what a genocide city should look like.
genocide city got renamed later in development to a more appropiated name : Cyber City. it also became Metropolis Zone Act 3 and a Sonic Spinball stage
I absolutely love how the first act of the *FINAL* Zone in the game was moved to part of the *SECOND FRICKING ZONE*
The second zone was originally the final. For some reason.

+FLOWMOTIIION I hate wood zone so easy to fall
Jason Goldman what about genocide city zone and hidden place and the others ... isn't those are a good levels ?
THEY DONT FUCKING EXIST OUTSIDE OF CONCEPTS AND BETAS FOR FUCKS SAKE
Woof you DUDE, *JUST ******** *STOP* OK? JUST YOU ARE HATING EVERYONE JUST FOR A GAME?
Just clarifying that these are fanmade, Genocide City was a translation error and wouldn’t have looked like that
But hidden palace appears in the mobile version of Sonic 2
@@latzladanyi7369 yeah, we know
basicly, some "what would have been" levels, cool!
"all secret levels in Sonic 2"
Well they aren't secret anymore!
(Death egg zone act 1/2)
That guy who beat sonic 2: somethings wrong I can feel it...

Death plant zone
SOMEONE PLS TELL ME why did they remove these zones?
i think it was either they didn't have enough time to put them on b4 release or there wasn't enough room on the game cartridge
kakoroto no there has to be another reason… THERE MUST BE (thanks though)
Soggy Android i don't think so…SEGA said they finish ALL stages...
Soggy Android DUDE!!!!! MY PROOF IS EVERYWHERE ITS COMMON SENSE LOOK IT UP!!!
Soggy Android YOU MEAN THE IOS/ANDRIOD VERSION YEEEEEEEEEEAAAH THATS SO FAKE
I know this is fake but I like how you made wood zone actually playable!
is it just me or does genocide city not load properly when selected.
The title card shows up but the level doesn't load
Sonic 2 is not a 2015 game. The level was scrapped and made into a cybernetic level in Sonic Spinball AND Metropolis' Act 3. The stage on the actual game is unused garbage, just like Wood Zone (actual sonic 2) and Hidden Palace (actual sonic 2)
0:14 Eggman poops? #whatthe

Sonic 2 is one of my favorite sonic game of the 1990s what a throwback
I always like to play wood zone when I wake up in the morning
Does this only work on the The Genesis
These aren't secret, they are unused levels from sonic 2 beta, also most of this was fan made
For those who don't know, This is a rom hack that is called Sonic 2: Long version. You may think this is a real game but it is a rom hack that you can play as Sonic, Tails and Knuckles.
The link in in the description
3:37 Yeah... those skeletons are for Kids! +7.
Pensamiento 0 3 year old comment, but this is not at all what genocide city would of looked like. Check the top comment
Shit that's horrible 😟
Ugh... why can't Sega just continue these games properly? Sonic 4 tried but didn't capture the awesomeness of the classic games. Surely it can't be that hard or time consuming to make a Genesis/Mega Drive era-style game!
Oh making a game is not as simple as snapping your fingers and its done it requires a lot more effort
Blaze V. Yea... I completely agree. At least we'll always have the classics!
At least now they're trying to regain it.
This is recommended to me 11 years later
Who else though wood zone was beautiful?
👇
Now I wanna plau genocide city just because of the name
animal robots genocidee :v
Mistranslation
Undersonic confirmed!
ITS TIME TO STOP
firebat128 Genocide city is actually metropolis zone act 3 the developers thought the word genocide meant robot but they found out the true meaning of it and renamed it
Death Egg (the one showcased in this video) is basically CPZ with a palette alternation, a different background, and slight level changes.
I would have liked all these levels in the game but Sega has its reasons
"Genocide city"
That seems a bit counter intuitive
Since a lot of people don't seem to get it, I'll explain. These are just prototype levels, that's why they're in the extras and not in the main game.
Not extras,FAN MADE STAGES on a FAN MADE ROMHACK
Hidden palace was official in the iOS version
Fork-Nose Films I know right! It's so cool! It doesn't have the same function but it's a nice touch!
Fork-Nose Films And android.
this game is the beta version?
no
The level design is okay, The bosses just suck, And Death egg is just chemical plant in space.
. . .
Yeah, could of had a lot more effort put into it.
You're profile pic fits In with your comment :3
Rage7800 these are unfinished beta levels from Sonic 2 that got scrapped
They were unused and unfinished
explain 3:39
You really should have clarified that these are all fanmade.
Hidden palace is real, and it is different from this one.
I played it, trust me.
hidden palace is real lol
You can play hidden palace on the mobile version of sonic 2

Dude, trust me.
Genocide city zone- basically a city being genocided, while calm music plays in the background.
''wood'' you like to enter this zone??, then just go to the option menu of this om hack ;).
When you realize "Wood Zone" is Knothole
0:00 chapter cuz IDK what to put it
0:05 wood zone act 2
2:47 genocide zone act 2
4:31 hidden Palace zone (is a literally official zone but it includes as the beta and prototype)
Secret levels? This is the Sonic 2 ROM Hack called 'Sonic 2 Long Version', nothing special...
Genocide City why no! in mobil >;(
Genocide Means Mass Killing.
+Ralts in America they were going to change it to cyber city
It is in Mobile and Genesis. It's Metropolis Zone 3.
Nathan Risdog Why the music is in the sound test >:(
Gino Arevalo Quispe I assume you mean Genocide City zones music. It's also Casino Zone's music for 2P VS.
Call it a hunch but I'm guessing with the fact that these levels were basically near replicas of different zones and maybe some time and space management, these were cut. Well say for Hidden Palace and Death Egg.
My favorite zone is wood zone
Too bad sega didn't implement it CAUSE OF US
sth2wood.mid
What is wrong with you?
ThunderboltGaming another thing well genocide background and the other sprite is real
How 'bout you?
It should be called Cyber City after all actually
Thank you so much!!!! This is just what I was looking for. I am happy to play the zones and beta levels of the game. Thank you!!!
Not actual beta of the game. Wood Zone is barely done in the betas,Dust Hill is a mockup screenshot,Winter Hill is not real,Genocide City is Metropolis' Act 3 AND Hidden Palace wasn't finished either
Interesting how the bosses here are pretty much the same as Aquatic Ruin, Mystic Cave, and Emerald Hill.
people that don’t understand this is actually a rom hack because if you use the level select code in sonic 2 it doesn’t show genocide wood or dust hill even if genocide zone was in the game it wouldn’t even look like this it would be a mechanical zone according to yuji naka so this isnt real genocide zone wouldnt even use chemical plants boss hidden palace was pieced together by scrap by fans and if you’ve played sonic 2 mobile you know this is mostly accurate so only hidden palace is a zone that would be used death egg is chemical plant with no water and the backround is space
The death egg was originally long, but was changed to into chemical plant. That's why the death egg is short.
this is a legendary video, been doing the rounds for years.
@Wanna Be a Smurt Person Trying If you cant tell this is a fan made game, then you'rev stupid as fuck.
you're*
"Genocide City Zone"?
Jeez, things quickly took a turn for the fucked up beyond all reason.
Death egg zone was a removed zone It's definitely not chemical plant zone in space
