This came out in 1986 at the height of Mike’s career as a 3D experience at the Epcot Center at Disney World. It was an attraction at the park for a little over a decade then it was taken down and replaced by a newer attraction. They brought it back for a few years as a tribute to MJ after he died. I don’t think it ever aired on Disney Channel tho. This film’s premiere was treated like a world event when it came out tho. No one else had their own Disney World attraction. MJ, George Lucas, who created Star Wars, and Francis Coppola worked on this project. The effects were considered the absolute cutting edge in technology at the time. Fun fact: while filming that whip combat scene Mike got hit in the face with one of the whips. He wasn’t severely hurt but he almost was.

Aez Fadi that's actually not true (at least not in the US). It was not taken out after the allegations. It ran for many years in Disneyworld after those allegations.

Yes, the 3D effect was amazing back then. Michael was beyond his time and the best at everything.

They can only show one side of the stereoscopic image, like putting on the 3D glasses and then covering one eye.
It would be really nice if Disney Imagineering could clean up the film and do an official 3D home video release. I'm not sure how complicated the conversion process would be though…

At the time, EO was the biggest short film ever ($23.7 mil).
There is an documentary hosted by Whoopi Goldberg on the making of it.
After Michael's passing and an 'fan-demand' internet petition to bring EO back to Disney's theme parks, the studio boss put the re-release into motion.
It came back for 5 years, summer 2010-fall 2015.
The movie and the documentary should be on Disney plus.
Since Lucasfilm Ltd is part of the Disney company now.

I live in California & saw it at Disneyland back in '86-87. It was a 3D theater. There's also a behind the scenes & making of Captain EO they would show while u were in line because the lines were long back then to watch it. By the time it was 1990 the lines weren't as long but by the time MJ had his 1993 accusations they took it down & replaced it w/ "Hunny I shrunk the Kids" 3D movie. And when MJ passed in 2009, they brought it back for a few years.
I think EPCOT in Orlando might've kept _EO_ longer than Disneyland, or maybe I was just really lucky to catch it on my first trip down there.

Shavonn & Monroe I saw this at Disney world when I was a kid. It was amazing. The reason the effects look like that is because the whole movie was in 3D. It was great with all the characters, spaceships, lasers and Michael jumping at you out of the screen. Also they had 4D live effects in the theatre with lasers and lights and smoke and your chair moving, etc. It was at Disney world from 1986 - 1998. And then they brought it back a year after his death from 2010 - 2015.
I got to watch it at Walt Disney World in 1988 on our Sr trip. Man it was an unforgettable experience. Was well worth waiting over 2hrs in line for.
I remember as Avery young girl 6 yrs old going to Disneyland numerous and Everytime I had to see captain E.O.
When people came out of this 3D every one wanted to change there lives and the world. He was the man back then I remember.
I promised myself that one day I would own this and before the internet got big I found it, so I kept my promise.
Michael would only do this with George Lucas as the director.
When I first saw Captain Eo in 1986,I was 17 years old.The 80's were my best time.

When it was announced that EO would be leaving the Disney parks, the film was shown one last time (in a 2x loop) on MTV in the early 90s. I set my VCR to record, then when the technology was available, I transferred that tape to DVD.

It was only available to us in the 90s in two theaters in the 2 Disneylands on earth. The best 3d show... fire. As kids we yelled at hooter, screamed we love you MJ, and freaked out at the witches nails and aliens look. Sick.

When it played in Disneyland, the theatre for this was located under Space Mountain, near the Starcade video game arcade.
It was so cool seeing it in 3D! It felt like you were a part of it when watching in the theater at Disneyland!

Yeah, I'm late, but I know it aired on Disney at least once. It was good number of years after the on-site attraction, though.
I can't remember if it coincided with an album release, but I remember being surprised that they were showing it, because they weren't trying to air it in 3D.
Granted, 3D stuff on TV wasn't really a thing back then; a few one-off productions would bump up sales of those little cardboard glasses every once in a while, but it was about as far from a common occurrence as you could get before you could actually say "no, that NEVER happens." LOL
I saw this twice at Disneyland it was in 3D good child hood memories. Also a appearance by Liz Taylor who was the queen 👸!
I saw this back in 1997 or 98 in EuroDisney on the last day before it was removed. We went there especially and spent the whole day watching it - I think we managed something like 17 viewings in that day💕 Michael ... in 3D ... mmmmmmmmmmm🤤🥰💕
I saw it in California Disney in 2010 as they brought it back for - I believe - a limited time after ‘what happened’ the year before.

i was in high school when this came out back in '86, it was a 3day opening event & the park stayed open all 3 nights, & i went by myself with just enough to get in Disneyland & no money 4 a room, so a lot of us slept on the monorail; i had the t-shirt & stole the 3D glasses..IT WAS GREAT! 😁

(She is played by Angelica houston) it was soo much fun to see in 3d with the 3d glasses on at disney epcot. I got to see it 4 times while there. It was sooo neat and fun. Also read the credits alot of famous people made this short film
THis film was shown at Disney them parks worldwide from 1986-1993 and was revived in 2010 until about 2012 after MJ's untimely passing. It was presented in 4D which is why the camera angles were a bit weird.

Seeing there was very concert like and smoke effect came from the screens and the seats shook, and it was 3D.
It was pretty bitchin for its day. SOOPER expensive to produce.
