  • Many are curious what LEGO can do for TFOLs. It's a lot more simple than it seems, and LEGO is already part of the way there.

I can't talk about Lego as a TFOL, Because all the other kids have a dopamine trip, I'm talking a dopamine vacation, if I were to mention Lego Star Wars. and I'm the type of person who gets picked on for not being a dopamine fuelled tiktok addicted "Jock", but instead being a more "Nerdy" kid who plays Nintendo, Lego and watches Star wars.

I’m 16 and grew up watching Clone Wars on Netflix, I think the midi scale sets like the Executor SSD and rumored invisible hand are perfect for my generation. They’re not too expensive compared to a lot of Star Wars sets, display very well, and don’t take up too much space. I think Speed Champions are also very good for teens for basically the same reasons.

This video spoke so much to me. I've been wanting Lego sets based on a bunch of animated Disney series (namely Kim Possible, Phineas and Ferb, Gravity Falls, Amphibia and The Owl House) or at least a Disney Channel CMF with the main protagonists from said shows, Avatar is in dire need of a comeback and I feel like Ben 10 has so much potential for a Lego theme beyond how badly it was squandered in 2010, but the problem is, according to what you said on Twitter, none of these themes besides Avatar are popular enough to justify them. I've also never been big on anime since my two biggest hurdles are they're too long and too vulgar (the latter of which seems to be the reason why Lego doesn't want to cover it) but I do feel genuine sympathy for those who are fans of it, since I know there are a lot of people who grew up with Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon.

    • @DutchThriceman

@@DutchThriceman But it is the case with a lot of the big ones. On Lego Ideas only 10 anime were allowed: Gundam, Naruto, Astro Boy, Fairy Tail, Mob Psycho 100, Saint Seiya, Madoka Magica, Speed Racer, Little Witch Academia and Yu-Gi-Oh. Everything else I tried got rejected (and that was assuming it got recognized at all).

If Lego doesn’t do anime or Japanese branded things, they’re just shooting themselves in the foot. The Pokémon mega block sets look painfully mediocre but kids and teens don’t care cause there’s an inherent collectibility factor to it. Teens love collecting stuff that represent their tastes and anime is literally designed for that

This is where I feel Bionicle should’ve stayed or at least a collectible figure concept. I gladly stayed on that brand into my teen years. Doing actual collectible figures at a reasonable price of people and characters across the board would sell like crazy (holy heck $30 for a marvel/DC action figure what are they thinking?) It’d be a great way to get teens into that space (and I just am here to see the downfall of pops)

I completely agree with this video! I’m 23 now & I would kill for some Lego licenses that I was interested in as a kid like Ben 10, Phineas & Ferb, & Gravity Falls. It’s just SUCH a miss that Lego hasn’t done anything from the 2000’s to mid 2010’s that I grew up with in my childhood. At least things are improving now with Lego Fortnite sets on the Horizon as well as some other stuff others grew up with like Animal Crossing. I would LOVE to see some Lego Ben 10 sets though because that’s what I grew up with & LOVED as a kid from 2006 to 2014. The people who came up with the show made BILLIONS in toy sales back then, so I think it would be a great idea to come back to 15 years later.

As a 17 year old teen who already loves LEGO. I’d love a teen based line. One aspect you didn’t mention is teen rated video games: the Horizon Tallneck is one of my favorite sets in a while. Affordable, very displayable and based on a game I love. Same goes for BD-1 (Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order). They both stand proudly on display in my game room.
Imagine if we got sets around Uncharted, Zelda, Insomniac’s Spider-Man, Metroid, I can go on
Maybe even adult rated games like God of War, Dark Souls/Elden Ring and maybe even more realistic stuff like Ghost of Tsushima, Assassin’s creed and stuff like that.
I get it if LEGO doesn’t want to make stuff like GTA, since that would be a bit too much for the brand. But having more fantasy based adult licenses like God of War wouldn’t be that controversial.
The leaks about Fortnite and a possible Zelda set are already a great sign. But I’d love to see them go even further. I love Mario, Sonic and (loved) Overwatch. But I know they can do better with teen based licenses.

The problem with teens (as someone who was one just over a year ago) is that what we like seems to change more heavily than with other demographics, Fortnite and Overwatch were the most popular game for a year tops and than suddenly became that icky thing we weren’t supposed to enjoy. Even Minecraft had that fate once but it has thankfully been vindicated. Liking toys also isn’t as much of a “cool” thing in that range, I think this is the bigger reason, while collector’s ones are either still thought of as toys or just way too expensive to justify buying.

Great take. I can remember i left lego when i was 14 and switched to video games (it was 1999-2000). I cannot remember if i felt it was childish, i think that video games were more appealing. I played lego with my cousin and we just started playing Heroes of Might and Magic 3 :)
Now i am old and grumpy and i am not sure if we need more 3rd party ips. Back in a day, lego designers were creative enough to propose their own themes. Now its limited to City and Friends. I think all other multi-sets themes are based on franchises. At the same time, the most successful and appreciated Icons/Adults welcome sets are lego's own creations or remakes of their clasoc sets. But the video was about teenagers, probably they do deserve some sets based on their beloved ips.

I don't know if you'll see this comment but nice video Pen, I do wish to add two points to why I think this demographic gets left out.
    1. Teens don't have money. Lego is like a Denny's restaurant, they'll serve adults but they mainly market to kids because the kids have parents who have money and may also participate.
    2. I think Lego purposely avoids making products that appeal to teens because part of the psychological aspect of "AFOLs" is the idea that they had a "dark age" and now have jumped back in. If a kid collects Lego and continues to while they're a teen, they likely won't buy as much when they're an adult (when they have actual disposable income)

I really understand your point, but let me bring some perspective here, I myself am a teenage fan of Lego, and I've personally never been brought away from buying a set just because it's advertised for kids, maybe it's because I'm mentally more of an adult, but still.
I feel as though if there's someone who's truly interested in Lego, and truly cares about it, no amount of appropriation toward a Lego product will bring them away from wanting it.
I still think a lot of your points are valid and apply to a good amount of people, I just thought I'd share my personal experience to bring in some perspective.

I feel like Lego should try to cater towards video games from the GEN Z era as well. Mario and Sonic are neat but they suffer from the same issue as Star Wars or Indiana Jones where they're too old to really relate to teenagers in that era.

  • @fulcrum2867
    @fulcrum2867 8 місяців тому

Another aspect is the lack of throwback sets for the themes us gen z grew up with. Classic themes have gotten a lot of love the past few years, but fans who grew up with stuff like power miners and Atlantis may only get a single sticker in a several hundred dollar set. If your family needs more convincing, show them the prices of Ninjago sets from 2011, compare to how much they were when LEGO released them, on websites people sell things. That should convince them.
