Tbh this is my favorite era of Lego Star Wars. This era brought in so many bold and new ideas and lead to some of the most iconic sets in all of Lego Star Wars. I have quite a few sets from this era, my favorite being the 4504 Millennium Falcon.

It was an incredible mix of the times. LEGO starting to modernize but it still had that iconic classic feeling.
Many of my favorite LEGO Star Wars sets are from this year as well.

I always thought the printing on the back of Lobot's head was pretty cool as a kid.

That was back when… well it was either super rare, or he was the first with back-side head printing. It escapes me, but it was cool regardless!

So when it comes to Lego legends, those mold's were still technically in production, if just not used in a long time. Your wording implies that the destruction of molds was something that happened back when the legends were released. This is not the case. The destruction policy from my understanding happened around 2004-2005. What was really killing them financially was the maintenance of the machines.
I recommend reading page 85 of the secret life of Lego bricks. While not in the book I say 2004-2005 because this was when Jørgen Vig Knudstorp was promoted to CEO, and he was the one that implemented the retiring of parts to cut down on maintenance. It says in the book Retiring elements occurred rarely unless for better versions.

I’ll make a note of this

Wouldn’t retaining and maintaining these molds for as long as they had, or even needing to make fresh ones in time, add onto all the costs of maintenance?

@@PenPlays Yes. That's probably how I would have phrased it. Holding on to it from my understanding cost more than destroying it. Also all the new molds of the 2000s that would also need maintenance, so that was on big money sink for them.
