  • I went in the 90hr time limit. 90hrs is a looong time so this video is pretty long too!
    ride my charge grater fixed 48:18 with 28c tyres giving a 71" gear.
    Massive thanks to Audax Club Bristol for organising the travel and accommodation and for generally being great.

    Some great moments in this wonderful footage which really captures the spirit of the event and the trials and tribulations that go with it. Some nice touches like the bread and rapidly depleting jam jar; the scene with you and 3-wheeled Aidan on the road; the final reflections that subtly answer the questions we all wonder. It was great to meet up at various points throughout the ride and I briefly joined the ACB train on the road out of Dreux (I'm the guy on the Flying Gate). Hats of for making it around on a fixed with a dodgy BB! And thanks for the bread tip - a pain de campagne occupied the top of my bar bag throughout the ride.

Sorted, the bike is now in harmonious synchronicity with the rest of my existence. Bottom bracket noises so often have more to do with a pedal or chainset disturbance, its a total head fuck.

    Excellent video as usual. Would you consider taking a thermarest mat and a bag if doing it again?? kip anywhere ?

    • @adamwatkins
      @adamwatkins  5 років тому

      I guess a very light weight bag would be ok but I think a mat is too much to carry, unless I have a real problem sleeping in a sports hall I'm really just going to minimise the amount of crap I take on the bike. Having a nice easy fast ride is preferable for me

      I did take a small cable lock, with the two pins to unlock it, this particular ride there were no issues about security really

    Was there any one from North Korea?
    Congratulations on a fantastic achievement riding fixed and with a knackered bottom bracket.
    Can you sleep anywhere not necessarily where every one else is so you can get a good kip in peace and quiet? All you'd need is a bivvy and a mat plus a bag which presumably you already had?
    Also are panniers banned?
    Well done again.

    • @adamwatkins
      @adamwatkins  5 років тому +1

      Hi Alex, didn't see a North Korea rider, but someone said they were represented. Carrying sleeping gear isn't recommended by the organisers, well at least they said not to pack a tent. There are a number of 'controls' with at least some gym mats to sleep on a a hall or something. You are right, with a bivvy and a mat i'm sure you could sleep OK in a field.
      I think i kept waking up due to being cold and then the snoring kept me awake. Next time I need my insulated jacket and i'd sleep much better and could comfortably through the night. Temps down to 8C were unusually cold this year I would say.
      Panniers are allowed and I saw many riders using them - I would be concerned at the aero drag at least 1 to 2kph disadvantage. I think a small handlebar bag and a big seatpost bag would be perfect.

    • @alexmorgan3435
      @alexmorgan3435 5 років тому

      @@adamwatkins Thanks very much for replying. Re the panniers. I'm not suggesting a full touring set up just a thought to help carry a little more to make the experience more enjoyable in terms of staying warm and perhaps wild camping along the route. Of course extra weight and drag would be issues but the route is quite flat. As you suggest a full bike packing set up might suffice. Still use the feed stations if need be and of course get the stamp at controls. Of corse to be accepted for this "race" you'd still have to ride your qualifying distances. Would a RTW ride count? You can get insulated down trousers as well jackets which are very light and pack down small. I think Patagonia do them.
      Still fantastic effort you made to do this especially on a diet of white bread and jam!
      I've thought about titanium bikes and a Van Nicholas, but a bit expensive for me at the moment.
      Oh and I asked about NK as you said on quite a few occasions every nation was represented at the event.

  • @MulksBikes
    @MulksBikes 3 роки тому

    Good video - I've watched this a few times. Would you think a 75 gear inches ratio would have been more appropriate for the route and the hills?

    • @adamwatkins
      @adamwatkins  3 роки тому +1

      75 would be great I think, need to be a strong ish rider but the downhills would be much less painful with 75

    • @MulksBikes
      @MulksBikes 3 роки тому

      @@adamwatkins do you think that recommendation would be different for single speed instead of fixed?

    • @adamwatkins
      @adamwatkins  3 роки тому +1

      I wouldn't fancy pushing a big ss gear because you don't get help with the pedalling dead spot

  • @leeomurchu1213

    That looks a true test of endurance. hoe come so many were on single speed bikes? Looking at the elevation it's not to high but looks to be constantly up and down. Well done 💪

    • @adamwatkins
      @adamwatkins  3 роки тому

      Thanks yes lots of people said it was lumpy , some hills but nothing steep so fixed wheel is fine. I find the fixed drivetrain better for endurance, no option to freewheel and the added momentum helps
