    Outstanding video, don’t get the boneheads who complain about too much talking, you are a great communicator. Was looking for an alternative way to flush mount the fixtures other than was was provided in the instructions. Drill new mounting holes! Again, well done!

    Don't know if you are aware, but on the wall behind you to your left, I noticed there are several of those yellow capped screw drivers that are misaligned vertically. Originally, I'm sure they were aligned by laser, but somehow a few are leaning slightly, making them out of alignment with the other tools. Now the rest of your tools look perfectly aligned as we might expect. ;-) . LOL I just couldn't resist, I enjoyed this and all of your videos. I bought a couple of those lights from COSTCO for my garage work area, and they work great. I am 80 years old and the wife was so nervous while I was installing, but wondered if we could install LED throughout the house. Yup sure can, and those LED lights I installed down the 40 foot hallway, looks like 747 landing lights. Thanks for sharing all your great videos.....Ken the old grumpy guy from Marina CA

    Bought 8 of these a long time ago...like 2 years ago. Finally decided to install them now in my garage...getting into woodworking.
    Anyway, I am curious how to ganged them all together, did your have a female plug on the opposite side, so they could be ran in series? Thanks

      @@phlydude Yeah, I LOVE them. They still work great, I have them ALL on every time I'm in the shop, and the only thing I'd change is to maybe add just a few more. I love the light out there, but sometimes I do need to break out a flashlight to see something up close. But overall, couldn't be happier.

    you can only pair those rf switchers to the other remotes you bought if you put them on the same channel (bit they might come like that of lucky). Also you can pair those switchers in very useful ways! make an all-on-off button then use the other 4 as quadrants, they can learn more than one button, it's very useful. hold the button and plug them in to forget all pairs, hold the button for a few seconds after they are in to goto pair mode. pair each with a quadrant button, then go back into pairing mode and also pair the all-on-off button, done!

      Yeah, I haven't played around with them much yet, but I will certainly make a custom controller someday...

    Great vid! I put up a bunch of T8's in mine a few years back. I've been looking to swap them out for T5's, but after seeing how cheap you got the LED's, I think I'll be doing something similar to your setup. Thanks!!!
    I'm not sure I'd care to be able to control all 8 banks separately, but splitting them up into 2 sections, definitely.....which in that case, I think I'd just run another wire and switch to the wall where your master switch is now. Heck....while you're at it, you could add a third or simply separate out the mud room switch.

    Thank you Robert, I'm building a 36'X24' wood shop, have been given so many different ideas about number of units. Your video has convinced me that 20 is the right amount. The remote control, are they dim-able, and how does that work with the lights? Thanks in advance, I really appreciate the video.

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  5 років тому

      They're not dimmable, but the remote works well. When I'm just going out to grab something, let the dogs out, or not actually work on anything, the lightswitch turns on the backup lights, which is fine. If I want to work, I turn them all on with the remote. I haven't had any issues yet. The only reason I don't just have them all on when I hit the switch is they pull around 800 watts, so it would be a waste of power otherwise.

  • @Harry264EWF

    nice video. you mentioned when the switch goes off the lights stay off indefinitely, is that due to the remote sensor resetting or the fixture itself? i ask because i am thinking about just swapping my light receptacles out for power receptacles in my garage and chaining two lights together. i figure if i use the pull string to turn them all on once, i should be able to use the switch on the wall to turn them on and off for the remainder. is that correct?

    interesting setup, i'm building a house and vlogging it on my channel. our garage is very similar! I saw these at costco and almost pulled the trigger but i have a box of phillips T5 High Output bulbs collecting dust so i'll prob end up using them. they are 4600 lumens per bulb! i'm going to use 8 of them in the single garage bay which will have a 14' ceiling and a 2-post car lift. for the other side i'm just going to use 2700k 6" recessed cans to keep the garage warm. it will be complete in about 5 more months :)

      None. I've had them for over a year now (1.5 years?) and no issues and all of them work fine. I use them quite a bit too. I'm in the garage pretty much every weekend for at least 4-6 hours a day, so they get a lot of use.

    Anchors in drywall instead of just using the studs were a poor choice. Also, using the remote control units were an over-complication that actually adds time instead instead of saving it, as compared to a simple flip switch. Thank you for the video though. :)

    Very cool project. Do you have a model number for the lights you put in and what was the wattage, lumen, and Kelvin range of your fixtures? And were you happy with the lights color range when they were done? Was the light to harsh or to warm? Job well done!

    Great job and such a massive difference!
    I will probably be doing something like this towards the end of 2017, I'm very curious if you are happy with the amount of light you got or would you have settled for less/gone for more knowing the results?
    I might've missed it in the video but do you have a rough estimate of how much wattage you're pulling when all lights are on in the shop?

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  7 років тому +1

      Thanks! I highly recommend doing better lighting in any shop environment. There is no such thing as too much light... I would not have settled for less. The recommendation for a workshop is 100 lumens per square foot. I'm at 840 square feet, and I have 74000 lumens (not including the previous bulbs, which I might still use in addition to the new lights). This puts me just below 100 lumens per square foot. It does not at all feel too bright. I'm also missing two lights right now (they were damaged and I'm waiting on replacements). I'd say try and stick as close to 100 lumens as possible. I feel like the light is just right. I was able to pick out a splinter yesterday without using a lamp, and I was in the corner of the shop, away from any lights.
      As for how much power I'm using, each light is 42W, so in theory I'm using over 800 watts to light the garage. Thankfully, the lights are on their own circuit, so I don't have to worry about them cutting into the available power I have for tools.

    I have used those remotes for several years and find they are junk if they continually inserted and removed (Christmas lighting). 3 units for approx. $40.00 Cdn. by Woods at our local hardware store. The internals are all plastic and don’t stand up to casual insertion and removal. You should be fine if you install and leave. The cost wouldn’t be an issue for those well heeled individuals with laser equipment and measuring tools. A string would work for me. NO insult intended, just my view on the issue.

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  4 роки тому

      "well heeled individuals". that's the first time I've heard of that. does it mean "well off"? They have been working 100% fine for me, but you're right, I never really remove them.

    Wow, the transition at 13:03 is dramatic! I don't know how much is attributable to the lens change & exposure settings, but it clearly shows the net improvement your videos will get (and I didn't think they were bad to begin with). Colors are better too. Big success! You might get tired of those RF units pretty quickly though. :-)

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  7 років тому

      Yeah, it's pretty dramatic, there's nothing subtle about it in person. I like the RF units! Once I make something to control them, I think they'll be just fine ;-)

    When I was looking for LED lighting, I wanted "daylight" LEDs. The Lights Of America 4ft LED sets at Sams/Wal-mart/etc are 5000k and 4200 lumens. They are a little more expensive than these and they do not have diffusers, so you see E-V-E-R-Y S-I-N-G-L-E INTENSE LED. +bcbloc02 posted a solution of using the Krylon Sea Ice transparent paint to diffuse his. I picked up some Rustoleum frosted glass paint and it diffuses them enough, but you can still see individual dots, it just doesn't dazzle your eyes. Here's a link to the Amazon listing for the lights I'm talking about: www.amazon.com/America-Shoplight-Aluminum-housing-included/dp/B00UTX4HJS

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  7 років тому

      I looked at every available lighting solution before I ended up with the costco ones. The LOA lights seem good but a lot of people had reliability issues with them, and they're much more expensive. I actually like the color temperature I have. The brain is very good at compensating for color temperature, as long as it has a high CRI (color rating index). Almost all of the color you see from my videos is post-processing. It's pretty natural in real life, but I adjust everything in editing to give it the look I want. So, I could make them look very cold and blue, or really warm :-) It's all done in post.

    • @RobertCowanDIY

      Eh, it really depends, I haven't read the warranty. Generally speaking with things like this, if it works initially, it should stay working. I know there are exceptions... I've had these lights installed for about 2 years now, and they are all doing just fine. I use them about 20 hours a week on average (sometimes much more).

    What anchors did you use? Did you use the anchors so that you didn't have to mount it on a stud?

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  7 років тому

      I used some similar to these: www.amazon.com/Qualihome-Plastic-Drilling-Drywall-Anchors/dp/B016APV7SM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1498420897&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=drywall+anchors&psc=1 They're easy to install and if you get the ones that split out the back, they can hold quite a bit. I think mine were rated at 75 pounds. I just got them at Home Depot. Tried some from WalMart and they just broke.

    I'm not saying there's something wrong intentionally , but there's a vast difference in your old lighting at the beginning of video and your old lighting near the end . Forward video to 14 mins. and pause . While video is paused on 14 mins. , hold your mouse on pause bar at about 7 mins. and 40 secs. and then move mouse onto picture . Notice that in beginning , shirt is gray but at 14 mins. , shirt looks black . Also compare difference in hammer shadows in the two time frames . A huge difference . I wonder why ? Laying all this aside , your shop is lit up wonderfully . Great video with thumbs up-------------------------------------------------------------------------------Ernest E. Johnson

      A LOT of that has to do with the camera settings and the color grading I do in post-processing. I corrected for a lot of it before I did the before/after test. Different aperture, pulling up the shadows, etc. But yes, it's wonderfully lit now!
