Trimming the BAMF 2 DLG and Chasing Thermals

  • The BAMF 2 is an RC glider that rises in columns of hot air called thermals, and thermals are present even when it's cool and overcast! This is my third time out with my new Strong layup BAMF 2 DLG, and first time flying it in calm conditions. The elevator rates/expo and aileron differential still need some finetuning, but we're getting close.

    What kind of conditions do you usually fly in?

    • @SecretSqurrl

      All but dark, wet and windy. If I can get out for an hour, it makes my day. Quite happy to fly for two hours a day.

      As a sport flyer who isn't preparing for contest flying, I can afford to be a little picky. If it's between 8 am and noon, and relatively calm, I'm on it. But when the conditions deteriorate, I stop!

      Glad you enjoyed it! I think rudderless is sometimes misunderstood or has a stigma attached to it so I’ve been highlighting it a bit in my last few videos.

      @@ArmSoar I watched your build video on this model, I seem to recall you having an active rudder.....is it an option or were they rudderless at the beginning and now you encourage building with a rudder?!?!? Sorry just confused.....looking to get back into chasing thermals after a 25 yr layoff...😉

    I'm curios Tom, what's your favorite flatiron design servo placement wise? Linkage from boom to surface or wing impeded servo. I like the design of wing servos with the pushrod going through the wing to the upper part of the surface.

    Thanks Thomas. The voiceover/comments make a huge difference to these videos. Spent some time watching this one on the large TV screen.
    My speed once in the thermal is always much slower, bordering on stalling and my circles tighter.
    Does this vary thermal to thermal? Higher speed more wing lift? Wider circles more speed?

    • @ArmSoar
      @ArmSoar  3 роки тому +3

      Speed depends, I used to slow down my planes too much when in thermals. I find that flying them a bit faster makes it easier to control and less prone to outside disturbances. Circle size depends on the size of the thermal. Usually they're smaller down low and gets bigger as you go up.

    Funny how you consider a 45m launch soft, those are some of my best launches 😜
    Still loving my BAMF2, just need to fly it more often.

    Where did you find/pick-up the streamer for your transmitter? On the 35 MHz antenna it was easy to install, but on the new 2.4GHz system I have not found one yet.

    • @ArmSoar
      @ArmSoar  Рік тому

      I just 3D print a mount for the back of the radio, then slide on a fibreglass rod with a streamer attached to one end.

    Thomas, this is Kenny in Korea. I have been wondering about going rudderless myself. I think the advantages are loosing the weight of the 4th servo and control linkage and the simplification of flying? Are there some other advantages I'm missing? Are there any major disadvantages other than the obvious loss of yaw control?

    • @ArmSoar
      @ArmSoar  2 роки тому +1

      I don't think weight is much of an advantage nowadays, you might save a few grams but nothing significant. Simplification of flying is the big plus for me. Takes longer to trim out the model nicely, but once it's trimmed and you understand how to fly the rudderless model, it can be quite simple to fly well. The other advantage is less gear/linkages so it's one less thing to go wrong.
      The major disadvantage is the lack of yaw control as you said, so for very good pilots, you will lose out on some flight efficiency. You also lose some of the 'fun' of flying with a 4ch model as it's a bit dumbed down with rudderless.
      One disadvantage that I've been noticing right now is because I'm flying multiple types of models now, most of which has rudder, it sometimes messes with me when I switch between planes because the way you enter and maintain a turn on a 3ch vs a 4ch is different. Never noticed it before since I used to only fly F3K.

    Can u tell me the ailerons up and down relationship of your setup. Am i right with aileron down is 50% of aileron up?

    • @ArmSoar
      @ArmSoar  2 роки тому +1

      There is more down travel and less up travel (reverse differential). For reference, in speed mode, I have 16mm up and 25mm down.

    What is this additional thing called - for checking wind direction and speed?

    • @ArmSoar
      @ArmSoar  Рік тому +1

      It's just a piece of string on a fibreglass rod attached to the back of the radio. Endearingly called the 'wind indicator' 🤓

    What is the difference between rudder and rudderless in regards to performance and ease of use?

    • @ArmSoar
      @ArmSoar  3 роки тому

      Theoretically rudder should give higher performance, but I see a lot of people use it poorly and I bet it causes more drag for many pilots. Rudderless is harder to trim but once trimmed it’s easy to fly. Both works well, personal preference. Most prefer having a rudder.
