  • In 2020, my Wife and I sold our home, got new jobs and moved our family of six to the United Kingdom. As an African American father, I did not want to raise my children with only an American. perspective of the world... or with only American perspective of what it means to be Black.
Someday I will move back to America... but not today.

I’m an American and been living in the U.K. for almost two years now. The number one thing I like is Diversity especially here in South London. I lived in New York and then Atlanta for most my life and it still felt segregated in Atlanta. You had the black neighbourhoods, Spanish, and white neighbourhoods. Here in London you can see different cultures and race living in the same estate. I also met more Jamaicans here than I ever did in my life. I love the U.K. and will apply for citizenship in the next couple years.

I think what people mean when they say that it doesn’t matter is that it shouldn’t matter to anyone, and that it doesn’t matter to them. That’s a fair-enough comment. Also, not all Europeans think that they can patronise and laugh at everyone else. That’s 750,000,000 people that you’re stuffing into one pigeonhole with that comment. Which is just as bigoted as the people that you are castigating. You just notice the bad examples and ignore the rest.

A _friendly_ rivalry I'm sure you are soon to encounter.
Basically, stick a pin in a map and you're pretty much going to find something beautiful or interesting, and *our* history goes back thousands of years, not hundreds. That can kind of get addictive, too.

It's good to hear such a vote of confidence in our country, as you will have noticed on UA-cam there are other Americans who have come to the same decision. One of the reasons that we don't categorise people here on the basis of their genetic background is that most of us come from very mixed heritages, there having been immigration here for over 2000 years. (I am half Lithuanian, quarter Irish and quarter English, my wife is half Afro-Caribbean, quarter Scottish and quarter English, and that's just going back a 100 years or so! And we view ourselves as English.) If you and your family are good decent people that means that America's loss is our gain.

This will be a big adventure for you and all the family. There will be times when you all get homesick (especially the kids), but there will also be times when you really love the adventure and challenge and your new home. Welcome here :). The UK may be tiny compared to the US, but it is packed, so there are so many things to see and explore. England alone is vastly different from north to south, let alone adding Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. And of course, Europe is on our doorstep.
So, it sounds much like you came during COVID. Well, all I can say is that it is a better place outside of that. We have lost so many shops, restaurants, cafes and businesses, but hopefully these will come back.
Oh, and your kids will develop a British accent of sorts ;) Probably a mixed one. It will most likely sound American to those here, but when they go back to the US, people will notice the difference. That is a good thing of course. My accent is all over the place from all the countries I've lived in.
Anyway, I've started watching your videos and subscribed to your channel, so looking forward to more. They're wonderful.

That all changed in 2016(!), but now personal circumstances (eg, an aging parent) won’t allow it.
