Another way is with hot glue. Simply drag the nozzle up and down as the hot glue sets to create a rough bark texture. I've also used spackling/patching plaster applied by hand which is smoother than hot glue. You can also use an old rolled up catalog or magazine for the main trunk. Using all the methods in one scene ought to give it a pretty realistic variety.

Try using hot glue to “draw” on the texture. It’ll dry much faster and give lots of depth.

For Mod Podge, you can actually get two fluid ounce bottles of Mod Podge (matte and glossy) from the Dollar Tree for $1 each. Yes, I know not every town has a Dollar Tree with the same stock, but I've visited three in my area, and they've had them. I figured I'd share that info for those who may have a Dollar Tree in their area.

@@ROCCOTHEGREAT There's no such thing as normal, buddy. Besides, everyone has their own thing when it comes to materials to use. Back before I got into attempting dioramas, I used to build car models in my teens. I would use Duplicator automotive paint for the bodies instead of regular modeling paint (went on smooth and had 10-minute dry time).
