Recorded this at age 19! Blues playing prodigy... love this song
Yeah, this song was a classic in its own time. He also helps other young blues stars get started. In the mid-00s, I met a then 18 year old who was invited to a show we helped with (he had dated my boss's daughter) who had already played for KWS and BB King by then.
"There's something about the electric guitar that nourishes me." Well said.
That's a Strat for you
"it gives more than it takes", she has a way with words
Well said Lex!!
In my 62 years on this Earth, One thing is clear, I have heard the greatest music in the history of music throughout my life.
With you buddy. 61 myself.
63 years old we had the best music ever it's great to see young people like Brad and lex getting into it
i'm 65 and you are sooo right!!
Gotcha both by 5&6 years, hell when it's good, no matter the genre ! If you can't bob yer head to it or tap yer toe, it may not be good ANY TYPE OF MUSIC ( except polkas ) depends on the wedding I guess ! And depending on the mood the louder the better, Buddy Guy, Hank Williams, Grand Funk, it doesn't matter !!!
Just jumped on the 60 boat myself.
No trucks, guns, or cheatin hearts mentioned. It’s rock. Blues Rock. And its all good.
A complete lack of Dog issues is also a tell-tale sign.
When Kenny was like 8 or 9 years old, Stevie Ray Vaughan lifted him on stage, sat him on an amp and let him watch him play guitar. Changed his whole life.
awww, isn't that cute... sounds like some BS story to pump up KWS fans.
Lol, what was he doing at 8 or 9 before the change ?
His father was a radio executive for the station that was sponsoring the SRV concert. Its true he watched sitting on a speaker
@@wtritt5818 Yes but the comment said he was 8 or 9 and it changed his life, changed it from what ?
@@65cj55 dude, what is your problem?
Love this album...this song rocked when it hit and still does to this day!
IMO this is the best blues/rock song ever made.
He's talking about things that make no difference. Tears on a river, whisper on a scream. . . .things that are lost.
This, he's saying it's pointless. There is nothing he can do that will change it. It's like blue on black. Worthless.
@@ArcDevErik exactly, it makes no impact.
Brad, you are one of the coolest, most thoughtful reactors out there. And Lex, you FEEL the music unlike most! Y'all are fun to watch.
Glad to hear Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Blues NOT country. He's talking about things that don't make difference.
Lex's reaction totally sums up my feelings on this song. First time I heard it, I was SOLD.
You should try Jonny Lang "Lie to Me". I think you'll dig it.
I was about to say the same
Jonny Lang, Joe Bonamassa, Government Mule, Samantha Fish, Eric Gales, so many 'newer' blues acts that are killing it right now and barely get recognized.
The entire album set a new bar and I believe he may have only been 14 when it was recorded.
@@Kid-8888 I think you're right, I remember him being just a teenager.
Agree about Lie to me !
And for full on blues...Robert Cray. Amazing guitar and vocals.
Blues, Rock. One of my favorites.
Gary Clark Jr. is another real Blues man! Songs Like Bright Lights and Numb are great starts!
I still haven’t figured out why more people haven’t discovered Gary Clark Jr. His music is awesome.
Yes!
If you liked this tune, you will love Kenny Wayne Shepherd's first big song "Deja Voodoo" from his debut album "Ledbetter Heights." It was the first of his tunes I'd ever heard, and it reminded me a lot of Stevie Ray Vaughan's style. I immediately bought the album and I still love it. Most folks thought he sounded a lot like SRV as well - so much so that a couple of years after Stevie died, Double Trouble drummer Chris Layton and bassist Tommy Shannon toured with Kenny, performing live together. Fun Fact, Kenny Wayne Sheppard recorded the album Ledbetter Heights when he was 17...
There is a cover of this song done by FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH..BRANTLEY GILBERT...FT KENNY WAYNE SHEPHARD AND BRIAN MAY.....IT IS AN AWESOME COVER
Noah Hunt has a wonderful, soulful voice. Very underrated as a vocalist.
I was gonna say... KWS is good, but his vocalist has a marvelous voice, might be too refined for Kenny's gutty playing style.
Noah is a friend of mine. Really great guy.
I have them in concert probably 8 times. They sound just as good live.
@@jgox2 look for videos of Noah Hunt with Scotty Bratcher. I sell merch for Scotty. He and Noah play a lot together and have a side band called The 420 Allstars
Rodney Owens…. Okay, I will check them out. Thank you.
Brad, this is music, it doesn't really need to be classified into a type.
That's a lesson that has yet escaped Brad. Hopefully, he'll get it eventually. It'll be tough for him since he focuses on categories and lyrics but misses the "feel".
@@473mec yeah music is meant to be enjoyed not analyzed. Especially music you're hearing for the first time.
Classifications exist independent of the music.
EXACTLY! I started enjoying music in the early 70's .So I was raised on great music. We had AM radio back then.So it was all played , either Soft or Hard Rock! We didn't have FM, until late 70's.But Country Music was Real Country back then. People didn't put music in a genre for many years to come. Most times we didn't even know the lyrics.Ive sang songs for over 20 years, the wrong words. But hey it sounded good to me.lol But yeah, he needs to listen more with out his eyes. The message is very clear. All these things he talks about in the song, mean nothing in the long run.Like Blue on Black. They redid this a few years ago for first responders, it has Five finger death punch, Brian May, Brantly Gilbert, it is alot heavier , but still really good.
@@loriedwards4953 I'm a musician myself and I used to be hung up on genres and types, but now I just enjoy music.
So glad you two found Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Absolutely amazing guitarist!
I grew up in the same town in Louisiana as KWS and had mutual friends, it wasn’t uncommon to show up at parties and he’d be playing. His dad was a radio DJ and ended up buying the radio station. I got to see him open for Jeff Healey and BB King at a blues festival in 1994. I believe he opened for the Eagles around that time as a teenager. He is a phenomenal guitar player heavily inspired by SRV.
I remember him and his mom being on the Shreveport TV stations when he was a teenager. He was and is amazing!!!
Yep, born & raised in S'port City, LA and listened to his Dad on KEEL AM radio, WAY back in the day! Home town boy done very well indeed!! (Go Cowboys! Beat Gators! and the rest of 'em too.)
@@rloyd Who Dat! What’s the word? Beat Byrd! CSHS c/o 95
@@RyanHeafner Small world on these interwebs! What are the odds you went to CSHS and I had that chant stuck in my head?
Great song.
Great vocals and great guitar.
Great childhood friendship.
Noah Hunt (vocalists)and KWS (guitarist)
Noah's vocals and KWS's strat make it a magical experience to groove in.
At 19!!
I took my oldest son to see him twice at a local club. He got to meet Kenny and hang out on the tour bus with him. He also signed my boy's Gibson, alongside BB King's signature. I got hugs from the whole band after one of the shows, they found out it was my birthday and hugged me one by one, and bought me beer. Great night. 🥰💜💚💛✌️
That is beautiful. Real caring people.
Blues.
Kenny's father's a well-known blues radio dj from Shreveport, LA.
Look for the album, '10 Days Out'.. He tours across the South, finishing in a concert with old, established blues artists, playing along the way. Guests meeting up with him include BB King, Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown, Pinetop Perkins and others that played with Muddy Waters. My favorite is one he did with Bryan Lee. The song was, 'Tina Marie'.. if you want to hear some ROCKIN', this is it.
7:00 "Good music is good music, no matter the genre." Totally agree.
1:53 When this came out it played on all of the country, rock, and pop stations. Think that’s what makes it such a great song, it crosses and combines the best of a few different music genres.
contemporary Country has electric guitars, sometimes overdriven, even distorted. Kenny Wayne is a blues player. Whenever I listen to your reactions , it reminds of all the great and diverse music there was from the years 90 to about 2005.Alternative and Grunge, Metal, Nu Metal...sooo much great stuff...maybe it has to do more with my age at the time....20 to 35..those were the days...good times
Days of The New, song- Shelf in the Room. Same era, similar sound, huge hit. Kid recorded it at 16,17. Kentucky boy
Kenny Wayne Shephard hails from Louisiana. Guitar virtuoso, made his first album at like 15 or 16. . Southern rock blues. It's good to see you younger folks enjoying music that really speaks. Keep listening keep broadening your horizons. Check out some Robin Trower, Daydream. You'll like it
Thanks Brad for your comment about the electric guitar growing on you! Many ppl I know think it's hard to stand listening to, which I do not understand at all lol, but at least it can become a great sound when you keep letting it in and then get it!
Kenny is a amazing, so much talent, he’s played with the likes of B.B. King and Eric Clapton incredible at such a young age. Hey Brad don’t feel bad I’m not allowed to sing Happy Birthday lol 😂
And Noahs vocals are perfect for Kennys style.
I think many of us were kinda hoping he could pick up the torch from SRV, but ...
The fact that this was on main stream rock stations really says something about how much "rock" stations have changed since the 90s.
When this came out it got airplay on the rock stations. Blues rock had a bit of a popularity surge at that time as a counterpoint to grunge.
This is blues Rock baby. And I think that lexy's line " There's something about the electric guitar the nourishes me. It gives more than it takes" is so on point. Hell, god damn insightful. You nailed it with that statement and I'm gonna steal that phrase
I loved this song the first time I heard it on the radio. Kenny does it with Five Finger Death Punch, Brantley Gilbert, Brian May as one of the most beautiful tributes to our first responders: ua-cam.com/video/p8NQUbLQGio/v-deo.html
A MUST WATCH Video very Tear-jerking! 💜🇺🇲😭
Kenny Wayne Shepherd makes some of the best blues music out there.
My favorite KWS song is “Was”. But “Blue on Black” is right up there.
It’s Blues, Kenny was a child prodigy, he’s Blues thru and thru.👌🏼😎🎸
Kenny makes Blues. He's fantastic. You should hear his other stuff. Love how Lexi gets all into it. Seems like she likes music more than Brad.
Kenny is the guitarist, another guy does the singing.
Hey guys what's up! Greetings from South Florida! I've seen Kenny Wayne Shepherd twice, and in my opinion he's one of the best living guitar players of today. He is just a monster live! You guys rock! God bless you! Peace!
I remember when this first came out. Every one was surprised at his age and his natural talent. He's always been fantastic. Glad y'all found Kenny.
Kickin ass. Excellent drunk jam. Country has electric peddle steel guitar, which is awesome.
This whole album is fantastic, there is even a phenomenal cover of Hendrix I don’t live today👍
this song never struck me as telling a specific story so much as just conveying a general feeling, and the feeling this song conveys is a general lament for being too small to change the things that are wrong with the world.
I saw KWS at the Electric Factory. He had Stevie Ray Vaughn's band Double Trouble on bass and drums. What a show! He finished with Voodoo Chile SRV style. It was as close to seeing SRV as I'll ever get
Saw Kenny Wayne just before the pandemic at Bedford Bluesfest. He's finally beginning to find his voice and sing on some of his tracks.
Kenny Wayne Shepherd is an absolute guitar prodigy, had a re record deal at 16 and re recorded this song at 19, he is AMAZING live too, I had the pleasure of see him in concert in the late 80's...
Doing concerts at 13/14? That's impressive
There's a cool detail in the lyrics that I've never seen any reactor notice: the last phrase of the choruses before "blue on black" alternates between the incorrect form of the negative 3rd person ("don't bring you back") and the correct form of the negative 3rd person ("doesn't bring you back"). I don't know if it was a conscious decision or not but whatever the reason, it gives a certain "unpredictability" to the chorus. 🙂
I love this song. Kenny Wayne was a prodigy back in the day. Never quite got the commercial success a lot thought he'd become.
This is random but Lex you're killing me. Mad Season - River of Deceit. PLEASE. It's Layne Staley (Alice in Chains) with Mike McCready (Pearl Jam) and Screaming Trees on bass and drums. It's a beautiful song with lyrics just for Brad.
Absolutely!
Never got the commercial success? This song was on the radio every day multiple times a day for like 10 years.
I love that song....
@@vagabondwastrel2361 Agreed this song was but Kenny Wayne was supposed to be the next Stevie Ray and just never happened at any level was my point.
I've been asking them to do mad season for awhile. I think lex would probably like wake up or long gone day.
Trust me I've come across many, but the end of this video I realized it's the best review I've ever known of this song.
Just enjoy the smoothness of this song. Believe me when I say the more you listen to it the more you will enjoy the subtlety of the guitar sounds he produces.
This song was all over the radio & what got me into him. Its a total vibe. He didnt start out singing but does now. He was 17 when he recorded his 1st album with his original singer. Noah Hunt joined him for his 2nd album with this song. Kenny Wayne is a shredder. Check out his version of *Voodoo Child* 🤟 He also has a side project with Steven Stills called The Rides 🚘
Five Finger Death Punch have a nice cover of this tune.
It’s definitely a cross genre song. It has elements of country, rock/southern rock, and blues. But yes country can and does have electric guitar and I’m not just talking about modern country. Waylon Jennings played an electric guitar for decades.
Lex, the way you feel and describe songs is usually how I feel !!! If it makes you feel good who cares if the words add up.
Only got to see these guys play once & they opened for Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes. I didn't know they were playing that night so we missed most of their set but they played some great Hendrix stuff. Their lead player can really play!
Kenny is the guitarist here. The Genre' is called "Americana"
Written by KWS along with Mark Otis Selby and Mark's wife, Tia Sillers. Mark is a blues songwriter from Oklahoma who moved to Nashville, thus the country influence you heard Lex. Good listen! Mark also wrote "There's Your Trouble" which the Dixie Chicks made into a country hit.
Love when Lex starts feeling that music!! 🎶🔥
Kenny Wayne Shepherd is a blues artist , he does all the guitar solos & Noah Hunt does the singing for him . Noah Hunt went from singing karaoke in a bar in Cincinnati Ohio to one of the best blues / rock singers out there .
Don't be so quick to label, music only needs to move you. That's the deal❤️❤️🎵 This is beautifully written and played. Enjoy✌️❤️🎵
I remember when I heard his music for the first time. Couldn't believe how young he was. You guys need to check out Johnny Lang. The song "Lie to Me" is incredible because he was in his teens as well. They both had great songs around the same time frame if I remember correctly.
I 💯 agree, Jonny is amazing!!! I saw him when he was 16 and opened for Aerosmith. My favorite by him is darker side though.
I'm nearly 60 now, but Lex reacts to these songs from the 70s, 80s, and 90s just like I did when I was 10, 20, and 30. Love seeing her get into a song I love.
Damn I hope these two start getting into some blues!
been waiting for you guys to do this one!!
Love that you let everyone know when it's the first-time hearing. Thanks!!
Nice this sounds good. Like old school southern rock. A mix of rock, blues and country music.
Great song I would call this blues rock
KWSB ROCKS! #BluesRock
Kenny Wayne Shepherd is a Masterful Guitar player. I’ve had the privilege to see the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band on several occasions in 2000 & 2001.
The Blues make me feel Oh so Good 🎸✌️
Hello Brad & Lexi, hope yall are well. An amazing song. Unfortunately Kenny fell short because of alcohol. He is sober now but his career was stomped because of his addiction. He is a very gifted guitarist. The band still tours now but not at the same level. It is blues/rock music, hope yall check out his other early cd's. There are many other great songs on those cd's
Southern Rock. Kenny is from Shreveport Louisiana and that's where his roots are from. He sounds a lot like Stevie Ray Vaughn at times, but not quite as good as the master. This song is more commercial. Most of his stuff is obvious Blues to the ear. Do a live version of Kenny doing Jimi Hendrix Voodoo Child.
You got it now Brad, this IS music! Thanks for playing this one, and enjoying it!
He’s amazing. Especially live in concert.
So glad ya'll listened to this beauty!
Great song!!! Glad the guitar is growing on you Brad!+! It's an amazing instrument!!
If you like this. You should listen to another child prodigy from the same time period and style. Jonny Lang. Kenny and Jonny were both considered guitar genius's.
Smith & Myers does an amazing cover of this song along with Jenny Wayne Sheppard. It's Brent Smith of Shinedown. Give it a listen!
Always liked KWS. My favorite from him is probably “somehow somewhere someway”. But to be honest I like Jonny Lang’s style a bit better. Lang’s song “walking away” got me through a very dark time in my life! Seriously suggest checking that one out
Agreed
That's good ole music. Love yall guys, always putting good vibes😎😎❤️🔥
Amazing blues guitar, along with Stevie Ray and Johnny Lang, one of the best this song doesn't showcase his talent's all that much but it's definitely worth hearing more.
The demo of this song was given out on the Levi's Nu Grooves sampler back in the day. It also featured One Week by Barenaked Ladies....
Which you two should watch.
Just wanted to let you two know that yours is the only subscription I have ever done. Excellent work. Y'all rock! 😊
I've never listened to this artist before. I really like this. Thank you for turning the old lady on to new music.
Yes country has electric guitars. A great example of that is Keith Urban who can shred with the best of them these days. There's also Brothers Osborn. They are amazing. There are plenty more.
Great song, love the solo.
Kenny is awesome! He and Jonny Lang are two men who started playing blues about the same time. They're both great. Check out "Shame, Shame, Shame", "Aberdeen", and "Live On" by Kenny and "Lie to Me" and "Angel of Mercy" by Jonny..
This song almost gives us hope that rock is not dead in the modern era.
Always fun seeing Lex react how songs make me feel
He does an acoustic version of this song with Smith & Myers (Shinedown), different from this but still worth a listen.
Love you guys!
Brad just sits there studiously, and Lex is just movin' and a-groovin'. Real good review.
I love watching Lex react to rock and roll and blues music. She puts me in mind of a rocker from back in the day. I can totally see her setting in a room with a black light, posters on the walls, a smoke being passed around and her just rocking out. Oh, and she is gorgeous too.
Am I wrong? LOL
You 2 remind me of me. In one hand. Very thoughtful and analytical. The other. I feel it down to my soul and letting move and grove me in any funky way it does. It's great to watch.
6:20 As an electric guitarist I understand exactly what she means. There's a level of emotion in that instrument that doesn't exist in any other. Such an incredible sound!
I remembered when he got his start. I used to hear his dad,a disc jockey in Shreveport,La. Shotgun Ken Shepherd.
Watched several reactions from you guys, love your enthusiasm LEX, especially on the ones that you’re not familiar with ❤️
I got to see Kenny Wayne Shepherd with Double Trouble one time, great show. Keep rocking
Gary from Tennessee ✌️🤘
♥️♥️♥️♥️ you guys!
The name is The Kenny Wayne Shepard Band. The singer on this is Noah Hunt. Kenny is the lead guitarist. Like Mike and the Mechanics, the named performer (Mike Rutherford, also plays in Genesis) is not the lead singer.
That's so weird. About an hour ago I was listening to another song by Kenny Wayne Shepherd. I thought it was the first song by him I heard, but I totally know Blue on black!
I saw Kenny Wayne Shepherd perform this song in Macon, Georgia b4 it was released. Best concert I've ever been to.
Great reaction!
