Thanks so much, love this. My nanna is trapped in a nursing home with cream walls everywhere and what saddens me most is that depression has been diagnosed. With 8 weeks to Christmas, and I am cutting 5 inch strips and squares and tomorrow afternoon this quilt top will be made. If I could hug you I would because I feel the tears in my eyes knowing my quilt might be the thing that inspires her to have faith in her new home.
12:14 Pm. This is a fun quilt I enjoy all the videos you do. I'm disabled and don't get out very much so I sew baby quilts and donate them. In the last 4 years my grand girls have come and all they want to do is sew which makes me happy when you consider all the peer pressure there is in this world today for teens to do. Keep doing what you are doing. I'm carrying on a family tradition I would sew under wear and clothes with my grandma my dad went to Canadian school and they needed to learn to crochet, darn and knit he taught us those things in the winter when he was laid off
This was the first video I watched when trying to learn how to quilt. I can definitively say that Missouri Star Quilt Co has not only taught me how to quilt and inspired me but also made me more confidant as a quilter and less intimidated by different designs. When I come across pattern I'm unfamiliar with I check to see if you've made a video about it before I even read the pattern. The sky is the limit! Or I feel that way because of videos like this. I became hooked on Missouri Star after this video and have made two jelly roll quilts now then I went over to the website and discovered your daily deals much to my husband's dismay lol You guys are great, thank you for everything that you do!
You are such an inspiration, Jenny! I haven't quilted since my Mom died 13 years ago (she is the one who taught me to sew!)...and now that I have a newborn son, I felt like I needed to quilt again. You are awesome, and I love watching your videos! Thank you so much!
I love this quilt. It is so easy and it's such a surprise when it's done because you never know how it will look til it's done. I made one with a jelly roll from MSQC and my granddaughter and I made one by cutting strips out of my stash. It came out so bright and cheery. With all her favorite colors.
I surely enjoy your tutorials. I am 67 and a beginner quilter. Very relaxing hobby. The kids love my quilts even with the mistakes within them, I think that makes them interesting.
This is my favorite tutorial! I love that it goes together so fast but that it also uses the extra little blocks to catch the eye throughout the quilt. This is one of many tutorials that lets me put together a quilt top in just a few hours!
This is currently my favorite MSQC video! I love how easily and quickly this quilt goes together, perfect for when I need a quilt for a last minute gift!
I have a great Jelly Roll Race variation idea! After sewing a regular Jelly Roll Race flimsy, cut it into bias strips as wide as your original strips were. The Continuous Bias Method which many quilters use for their binding strips is really appropriate here! Now you make a new Jelly Roll Race (bias edition) from those new bias strips. The colors and shapes are just scintillating! This quilt is so great for those of us who prefer angles to squares, and smaller pieces better than large swaths of color.
I really enjoy your tutorials. They are easy to follow. I wish I had sent you this sooner. Back in 2012 my quilt group had a jelly roll race, and one of the quilters didn't like her fabrics, so she cut 2 1/2" squares and added them to each strip. It changed her fabrics and changed the jelly roll race. I wish I had sent this to you then. It's amazing how quilters think and create, and you do it so well.
When I learned to sew, pressing seams open as soon as they’re sewed was driven into our minds! Sew and not stop every 45 seconds to press a seam open? Brilliant!
Loved this one too, Jenny! A hint for your viewers: Yes, you do end up with a huge pile of strips to the side of your chair with any Jelly Roll Race. Trying to keep them on the table as you go makes it too easy to sew things together in ways that will just need to be ripped out. Solution? Keep an empty laundry basket beside you to catch your roll as you sew. I clip the end to the side of the basket once I'm a couple of strips along to make it easier to find when I'm ready to start the next round. Additional Benefits? If you have to stop for any reason, you can get up quickly without tangling your feet, PLUS you have a way to set your work aside, safe from kids & dogs, if not cats. ;-) Another JRR version? It may have been said already, and it does take a little more cutting/sewing, but try cutting your strips in half width-wise before joining them. You get more variety & a scrappier looking quilt. It's also easier to really MAKE it a scrappier quilt by swapping around jelly roll half-strips! As Jenny has said before, fabric designers tend to stay in the same colorways. Swap around different half-strips from different Kate Spain collections, or within any of your favorite designers' collections. Talk to your quilting guild and other quilter friends; before you know it you'll have LOTS of half-strips for LOTS of JRR quilts. To cut them, don't bother unfolding them, just grab one and cut off the little pressed fold. As you cut, put each half of the cut strip(s) down in a seperate pile so you're more or less in the original order (getting a few mixed up & out of precise order is no big deal. Just consider it a design variation & keep going!) You can cut the selvages at the same time. NOTE: if you cut several strips at a time remember that you still need to separate each cut strip. A Benefit from halving your strips is that you don't waste that 18" at the start: you have twice as many diagonal joins or 2.5" squares, so their ALL OVER! And a Benefit from halving them as I suggested is that you don't have to worry about pressing out those annoying folds. So grab a Jelly Roll or two & get Racing!
I am so glad you did the jellyroll again. I am doing one right now and put bright colored squares in a black to light gray strips. I realized what I did wrong when I sewed the strips all together. Thanks for all of your help.
I really enjoyed this tutorial as it gave me the knowledge and confidence to make my first, jelly roll quilt. Just love Jenny's teaching technique, it's fun learning. Jelly Rolls are one of my favourite ways to quit. I have even used the technique to make shoulder bags Thanks Jenny and Missouri Star Quilt Company for giving me the confidence to work outside my comfort zone.
I have learned SO much watching your wonderful tutorials, I can watch you for hours! Jenny, you are a HOOT, you make quilting FUN!! Can't wait to get back to my sewing machine!
Love it! I pieced a queen-sized quilt using the same method. The strips were various black and white prints and the squares were hot pink in varying widths.
my favorite video is on making a rag quilt....I am new to quilting at age 70..... And I think I can do the rag quilt! I love this website....my next try will be the jelly roll!
I have used this technique quite a few times, and it always comes out great! My favorite one that I made was using a black and white jelly roll, and my squares were batik solids in hot pink, lime green, orange, purple, turquoise and yellow. The little squares are just a pop of color throughout the whole quilt.
Jenny, you're so cute! I saw this version at a quilt store where I live but had no idea how they made it! I'm so happy to see you being able to sew without having to stand up! I love seeing you sew with your machine so perfectly embedded in your cabinet! You make it look like a breaze! Love the fabric roll you picked out with the adorable umbrellas on the border!
I am new to quilting so this is the first video I've watched. I'm so excited because you make it all look so easy! I am no longer overwhelmed as to where to start. So Thank you!!
I like seeing that the jelly roll quilts are now being changed up. I haven't wanted to finish mine because I feel like it needs something else. It is inspiring me to be creative with mine now.
Love you Jenny! Thank you for sharing your knowledge, skills, tips & tricks, & wonderful self with us. My brain soaks up your beautiful projects - & begs for more! Thank you & your super Family & Team Family for all of your support. Let the fun continue❣️9/17/2022
Made my first JR Race quilt a few days ago. I cut my (most of) strips in half for a little different effect. I loved doing it and will for sure try this one!
I made a baby quilt this way a few weeks ago. Used colorful 2.5 inch blocks in between each strip. Turned out beautifully! Love this tutorial. Thanks, Jenny.
I made this with a camper fabric...there are some directional prints. So, some of the strips are upside down. It was still cute. This was my first jelly roll race. I'm a newer quilter, so I'm learning little lessons with each project. I love, love, love the tutorials! Thank you for helping me be more courageous in trying new blocks! 😃
I love att the tutorials but Jelly Roll 3 is hilarious with the extra set of arms. You have to have fun when you sew! I have a jelly roll coming soon and will be using it to make thus quilt. Thank you Jenny for bringing humor into my day!
I did 3 quilts with the 1st jelly roll race & loved how quick it was, so when I saw this I had to try it. Difference is I picked out 5 solid colors that were in the jelly roll & stacked them (1.2.3.4.5) to the side and added one at a time. I had no idea where the colors would show up on the quilt. Wow was I surprised at the end. When I opened it up at the end I had 4 different color groupings and one side that had that one color all along the side. I think this is a great pattern & will use it again.
I just love your tutorials. I was totally absorbed in the jelly roll race 1, and this one is just as good. You are an amazingly good teacher. So much fun to watch you.
i love this! i have made several jr race quilts with the block look, instead of slant seam. MSQC made them extra special by doing the machine quilting for me. that little square adds so much interest. love this fabric, too - great job again MSQC team! (i use that 18" strip by cutting in smaller strips and placing them randomly.)
Loved the blooper on this one too. You make me laugh. I need that. Love your tutorials. I'm a new quilter and going through all the videos to see what I think I can do. Problem, your such a good teacher, I don't think I will have any problem doing any of them. Now to sort out the money to purchase all these projects. lol
Jenny, love your quilt designs! Did the Jelly Roll Race and it turned out wonderful. This new one I will start later this week. Thanks again for a fun and informative video.
I purchased the Serna Jelly Roll to make a quilt like the one in the first tutorial, but I like this one even better. Def will do this ....can't wait ...thanks!!!!!
I have a batik jelly roll I was saving to make a rope purse, but I'm using your customer's idea of black squares instead! I have a friend getting married soon who would probably love it and it goes together so quickly!
I sewed the squares onto each jelly roll strip first, then went to sew the strips together in one continues strip. More prep time but the second sewing goes much faster I thought.
Of course the answer is on google and no math needed - here is a chart, hope this helps others who like me was worried about my quilt math. Quilt size # of jelly rolls Size in inches (approx.) Crib or baby quilt 1/2 package or 20 strips 32 1/2 by 50 Lap 1 package or 40 strips 50 by 64 Twin 1 1/2 packages or 70 strips 64 by 88 Queen 3 packages or 105 strips 86 by 93 King 3 packages or 120 strips 104 by 93 all strips are the standard size of 40 inches
Thank you so much! I really enjoy watching you and love your enthusiasm! You teach me something new everytime. Keep up the great tutorials and I promise to keep watching. You are my favorite. ☺
When you are joining the strips together with the little squares, I think you could save a lot of time and thread by using "starters" in between. Love your tutorials!!
I made your jelly roll quilt before and it came out so adorable, next will be the jelly roll quilt race 2...I love your videos, and always looking forward for the next one to come out :)
That is amazing. I’m new to quilting and I think I could try this. I have a beautiful Disney jelly roll and a child to make for.....just right I think.
This is my second video from Missouri Start Quilt co... Jenny is a gem. Fun to watch and very easy to learn from. I have shared both of the Jelly Roll Race videos on our business Fb page for our clients. Thanks for the videos and keep up the good work!
OMG, challenged and raced myself today. While it took about 4 hours to connect my strips diagonally end to end , the rest of the race happened in less time than my husband watched a movie. So quick and cute. Thank you Jenny and Missouri Star!
You are just wonderful!!! The headlights part actually made me laugh out loud... And I'm at work so :3 thank you for this tutorial I am really new to quilting and don't know anyone who quilts so this helps me a lot. Thank you so much!!! ^_^
I watched the first race and was entranced, but was still having questions about the folds at the bottom and when to cut. Im new to quilting, but you really made this very, very clear! Thanks a ton for that :)
When I make a jelly roll race quilt, I use a binder clip on the first strip to tell where it is. That way I can find it fast to sew the end to the beginning.

This is what I plan to do because I will have to cut 2.5” strips from fat quarters. I’m so glad to know it will work like I want it to! Thank you
Can't wait to give this a try. Made the 1st Jelly Roll Race quilt with our guild, but love how the square addition adds an appealing "pop".
I am so glad you did the jellyroll again. I am doing one right now and put bright colored squares in a black to light gray strips. I realized what I did wrong when I sewed the strips all together. Thanks for all of your help.

Variation idea: use an all white JR and use multi color squares.
That is a great idea!
That is my plan - low volume strips & patterned, colored squares.
Love your idea. Going to try it.😊
Awesome quilt and tutorial from Jenny... So much fun!
Great idea of putting squares on the strips. Loved the outtake at the end Jenny!!!
Jenny, love your quilt designs! Did the Jelly Roll Race and it turned out wonderful. This new one I will start later this week. Thanks again for a fun and informative video.

Never thought of that. Good idea.

Cute addition to the Race 1. A good way to get a slight increase in size if needed. You're fabulous as always Jenny!
the ribbon comes in handy to roll your quilts up
Pamela P3pp3r54 Good tip!
I like the idea of the little squares. Will have to try that. :)
I love jelly roll quilts!!! Great tutorial!
You are so funny and down to earth... Love love your videos
Love this look. I have made 3 quilts this way and have plans to make a couple more.
You are just wonderful!!! The headlights part actually made me laugh out loud... And I'm at work so :3 thank you for this tutorial I am really new to quilting and don't know anyone who quilts so this helps me a lot. Thank you so much!!! ^_^
Hello Amy, Thanks so very much this is such a fun and easy quilt to make !
You are such an excellent teacher!
I watched the first race and was entranced, but was still having questions about the folds at the bottom and when to cut. Im new to quilting, but you really made this very, very clear! Thanks a ton for that :)
Made this with using half a charm (2-1/2" x 5") between each strip. Result is great!
Loved both jelly roll race videos thank you so much.
I must be the only person with no jelly roll. I'm off to get one 🤸♀️ thank you for inspiring me 🤸♀️
Love this Jenny! You're a real pip!
love the Jelly Roll Race have done 5 jelly rolls quilt this will next one thank Jenny
Thanks and Happy New Year in advance.
Thanks for sharing. Love your tutorials.
I did this very thing on my JRR quilt. Turned out great!
Awesome Jenny!!
Love this. I made a quilt like this last year. Great mind's think alike.
When I make a jelly roll race quilt, I use a binder clip on the first strip to tell where it is. That way I can find it fast to sew the end to the beginning.
I like that thought. I think I'll use a big binder clip and clip the start to the table.
I've been looking for this pattern for some time and was thrilled to get it.
Thanks! Your video really helped me with my jelly roll quilt!!
Adorei, amo seu trabalho e sua simpatia! Apesar de não falar o inglês consigo entender muito bem seus projetos. Obrigada, parabéns!
Love this tutorial....I've got 6 jelly rolls waiting in the wings!
I love this look of a quilt for the jelly roll race quilt, thanks for sharing!! Also absolutely loved the blooper you added at the end! I busted out laughing when I heard the camera man in the background. lmao
