      Fantastic news Kieran, however I must warn you it’s addictive. Hopefully you might post pictures of your progress. My health and safety advice is keep both hands behind the cutting edge when using sharp objects, if the chisel slips😢 Take care

      Thank you David, much appreciated. Do subscribe (or maybe you have, hard for me to tell with UA-cam!) to follow this violin as it progresses. Cheers, Graham.

    Nice video Graham, i though it a very good idea using a beer can to make templates. I was using a compass to mark various diameter circles and then connecting them up with a flexible straight edge. I will be following your method in future, a much quicker process, thanks for demonstrating it.

      Yes, if you tend to have a similar starting point for all your scrolls (as I do) it saves hours!!

      That's kind of you to say. I try to have as much freedom as possible in the making so that each violin is different. If I'd used a load of jigs these two scrolls would have been the same, and that's not my intention. I think it's that individuality that buyers seek, owners cherish and as you say, it brings me joy!!

    Graham, it is a pleasure to watch you work. I was wondering if you would venture a guess of some particulars about how you would build a Appalachian Dulcimer. What would you do different from traditional builds. I understand that this is not your field of expertise so feel free to have a large draft first if that suits.
    Your insights are fascinating.

    So what's the hardest wood natively found in England? Would that make legit fingerboard material?
    I've been looking at the same for USA, and some woods here can get quite hard. Black Ironwood, a relative of the olive tree, gets to a janka of 3660.

      Hi, English boxwood seems the obvious choice and has been used many times. It's a wonderful wood. Janka 2850 ish. Hard enough.

    Hi Graham, I have a quick query! My Italian violin scroll's a little too big! is this normal, I saw the average length or height of the scroll is 108cm. Mine is 108.9 nearly 109cm. When I compare it to my friend's violin scroll it seems to be like a viola scroll because it is bigger but of course when I compare it the viola it is smaller. Are there makers who intentionally do this? thanks in advance

      @grahamvincentviolins  9 місяців тому

      Realised I’d missed this question…. I think people get tied up by standard figures. Do you like the size of your scroll? That’s the only thing that matters.
