    Fantastic! You have actually just solved the problem that came up a couple of days ago on my Jaguar. The check engine light came on and stayed on then randomly went off, been doing the same thing over the last few days. This video appeared in my suggested videos so I watched it, checked the valve on my car and it was in the open position. I moved it back and forth and as pointed out in the video, the spring was broken! This will be my little project when the extension spring arrives!

      @@crystalclearmechanicsBeen working great however, just developed a red restricted performance message. Diagnostic code is P0490-72 which is EGR circuit high. From what I can see, the vacuum doesn't seem to switch off so the valve remains open, do you think that would be a solenoid issue? After watching your EGR removal video, I'm thinking of giving that a go to give it a really good clean and will give me a chance to check as many of the pipes as I can!

      Hi, the coolant manifold is split internally into 2 sections / channels, one being direct the other being cooled, the vacuum unit only diverts the gas between the two.@@draven_7621

    Great tip - thank you. I don’t usually do any work on my XF but I thought I’d give this a go. It took a while to locate a spring (EBay) but fitting only took a few minutes. The warning light stayed on initially, but went out after a few trips.

    Very useful tip but I seem to have a different problem with the egr solenoid on my XF. The spring looks to be intact but I cannot move the actuator arm freely in and out like you do at 6:22 in your video.

    • @crystalclearmechanics
      @crystalclearmechanics  9 місяців тому

      Hi Malcolm, thank you for watching and for your feedback. The arm you mention is connected to a diaphragm ( not a solenoid ), it works on vacuum. The spring gives some resistance but it should move in and out freely. Try disconnecting the arm from the lever to see which is causing the issue.

    • @malcolmturton9779
      @malcolmturton9779 9 місяців тому +1

      @@crystalclearmechanics Thank you for very prompt reply. I have just disconnected the arm and everything seems ok. The arm moves freely and the lever with the spring on does move with a fair bit of resistance.
      I will borrow my friends scanner to check codes and see if I am looking in the right place for my intermittent engine light. Thank you again.

      @@crystalclearmechanics the small metal plate that sits above the spring and is attached to the plastic rod. my spring and plate has broken

    • @crystalclearmechanics
      @crystalclearmechanics  4 місяці тому +1

      Hi William, the plate with the ball joint that the plastic rod fits too that plate should go backwards and forwards, it should not spin around in a circle if it does spin then it has seperated where it joins the spindle at the top or it has seperated from the butterfly valve inside the manifold. On top could be spot welded, inside you would have to take the manifold or part of the manifold off to repair it. The vacuum solonoid sucks the butterfly valve in to close off the radiator side of the manifold and when it releases it opens it so the gas passes through. The vacuum valve controls your engine warning light not the butterfly valve. If you have more questions please ask@@williamdewar4662

    Thanx, got the fault code, P245a, so think this might be the problem. Will need to check and see if spring is broken ??

    • @crystalclearmechanics
      @crystalclearmechanics  Рік тому +2

      Hi thanks for watching the video, the code P245a is for the exhaust gas recirculation cooler manifold. The fault code will show for a few reasons, these being the most common. 1. The broken spring. 2. Vacuum feed or vacuum actuator fault 3. Electrical sensor ( integral too vacuum actuator ) or connection. The good news is, all the above faults are easy to access and diagnose. Remember the vacuum actuator will return back if released so best to check the spring with the ball joint seperated from the lever if it is not obvious. Thanks again for watching.

      @arnietwo11 Рік тому +1

      @@crystalclearmechanics ehhhh guys, today took a look and prised off that ball joint, and the spring didnt move !!! Perfect just as u said, spring broken ! So i made a temp spring out of a circlip i had lying about and made a bracket much like ur own. Put it all back and spring working. Only issue is u cant tell if it all works as u need the engine to kick into that situation that it opens that valve ??
      Well, we will c ? I also erased the p245a fault code. So thanx again, time will tell.
      Wish i cud send u the short vid i made !

      @@arnietwo11 Hi, glad it worked. Jaguar will only sell the 2 parts together ( part with the spring and the coolant manifold ) £400 + then you have to fit it all. If it does not cure the issue, your code will register again. Thanks again for the feedback.

      @@arnietwo11 Hi, no the code P245a is specific to the coolent manifold / vacuum unit. The vacuum unit stuck in one position ( broken return spring ) or faulty due to another cause will register that code only.

    • @crystalclearmechanics
      @crystalclearmechanics  Місяць тому +1

      Hi Ian, thank you for watching and for your feedback. The vacuum valve fitted on top of the manifold with the electrical connection ( check the electrical connection is good ) triggers the fault code if it does not open and shut correctly, it's the spring coil that snaps which is hard to see but if you're sure the spring is sound then check the vacuum valve arm is moving freely , if not then check the vacuum pipe to the vacuum valve has vacuum also disconnect the vacuum arm to the lever (spring end) and check the lever moves freely and is tensioned. The diaphragm in the vacuum valve could be faulty or the valve itself could be faulty. The lever (spring end) operates a butterfly valve inside the manifold which allows exhaust gas to go through or bypass the radiator in the manifold. .

    • @ianbuswell9633
      @ianbuswell9633 Місяць тому

      @crystalclearmechanics thank you kindly for a quick reply and details. I have disconnected the arm, and the gate returns fully.
      When the engine is switched off. Around 4 minutes later, the vacuum releases the arm and shuts again. But it looks like the arm is full in the diaphragm, i.e., in the open possession all the time. I will check the connections and wiring. Thank you kindly once again 🙏

      Hi Zack, thank you for watching. I use and cut to size brackets i had, but you can buy them from car shops / builders merchants etc. cut them to size drill holes if neccessary and to finish, shape and paint them. You can drill a small hole in the side of the plastic cam belt cover to connect the spring without a bracket if you want too.

    • @crystalclearmechanics
      @crystalclearmechanics  Рік тому +1

      @@ZackArmstrong-jb1nq Hi Zack, The EGR coolant manifold has 2 sections, a butterfly valve operates between them, one allows exhaust gas to flow through the section / half containing the coolant radiator, the other section / half is a bypass. The vacuum solenoid is designed when needed, to shut / or partly shut off the radiator side via the butterfly valve, The return spring ( that breaks ) opens up the radiator side via the butterfly valve.
