did you ever figure out what the noise was? my celica has the same exact knocking
Timing Belt? slapping maybe sounds like it coming from that side..
Had same issue was the lifter valves
You can't redline these Celicas because the oil doesn't distribute properly at redline.
True. Ended up swapping the engine but sold the car not too long ago

Find another gts keep that for parts
I think I’ll just put a new motor on this one
Gts models go for quite a bit right now haha

I think you could. The 1zz should swap into other cars with the same engine
