Please do a build video on exactly how you did your 3" 1W HDZ 💪
5" freestyle has been and always will be outlaw at heart. Rip on!!
Certainly
@@Tensentities WTF does this mean.
I absolutely love how 3 & 3.5” micros fly these days. They are so good! I do however, feel that it is time for a VTX that focuses on durability above all else. Maybe the new Race V3 is the one? 🤷♂️
I've only flown 3in for years. If I hit somebody flying at the park it's not going to injury them.
Only for video would I fly 4in or 5in.
A bunch of my friends, from the UK especially, fly Recursion Labs, and the ever popular TT frames and keep it “sub250”… the “sub250” are generally under 350 grams AUW. 😜
No one gets their quad weighed, except one time in Japan that I heard about a quad that was over their sub100gram limit.
He wasn’t hassled beyond getting a warning and didn’t have any repercussions. But he was flying around tons of people in a large city’s downtown, during rush hour, for WAY too long. I know he was pushing his luck diving building after building and flying low over thousands of people in the crosswalks and sidewalks. I don’t think any of the people actually cared or were bothered, the police just happened to run into him. And apparently they had a scale in their vehicle. But even so, nothing.
Very few pilots are anal about 249.9g
As long as it’s not a 7”+ with a 1000 gram Li-Ion it’s at least passable for sub250… Though on that note one of my friends (not too far from me) gets away with his “sub250😜” 7” here on the West Coast, constantly, flying in the cities and the Parks, he technically shouldn’t be. I think his quad was 600 grams dry… no one ever cared beyond giving the usual “be careful and respectful” speech or ever weighed it. He does get kicked out 50% of the time, but usually just moves a little and continues. He gets hassled at least twice a week, and nothing has ever come of it, and I know he pushes things WAY more than they should be pushed. But he is personable, so the rangers, security and police he has already talked with, know and don’t bother him. Establishing relationships in the areas you frequent is a very good thing.
A lot of people do lower prop size for the noise, as do I when I fly in super sensitive areas, but I also bring out the 5.5tri, and more commonly, 6” bi-blade setups, they are not too loud, it’s a different, more chill, noise. Not too dissimilar to the 3-4” size.
I’m flying a decent amount of 4.6” recently, just helping out with prop development. I personally much prefer it to the 5” size for freestyle. I fly 5” for racing only.
Racing is loud, that’s just the way it is. High throttle and a bunch of people at once.
But I have never done it in a super densely populated place, when I set up in a public park or something, I just stop when people and dogs are close.
On that note, women with dogs are the most likely to come up to me and want to talk forever about how interesting it is.
If they have kids I usually give them advice for getting their kids and schools into it. I have had nearly hour long, first time, conversations with random women that just want to talk to me.
I don’t mind, and actually love, spreading FPV, or kicking it with cool people. Plus I get to organically make more friends, have met some really, really cool girls this way.
TL;DR
Don’t be nervous or look like you don’t belong. Be chill, but show your values and boundaries with people that want to bother or limit you, and you’ll be good. No one cares about weight or regulations, just try not to be a dick.
Can't wait to check this new 1W out! Any review units laying around?
I can see the 5” replaced by 3.5 for close & safe, and 7” for exploring the country spaces.
Right, or even a wing or something for longer range stuff. I don't know - we'll see
I love my 3.5" 6S quad, it absolutely rips (O3, 250g AUW). But its not a replacement for 5", the fling and flight time and resistance to wind and stability are not the same. I'm keeping both!
What frame? Can you post specs on your sub250 03 3.5"?
@@markmiranda2881 my 3.5" build is: AOS 3.5 EVO, DJI O3, Flywoo Goku GN745 AIO, T-Motor P1604 2850KV, HM ELRS RX. Usually flying with Tattu 550mAh 6S, Avan Scimitar 3528 props.
Honestly, my opinion only, is that these rules will eventually apply to all weight categories despite being under 250gr. In politics, which is what I feel this is really about. It starts out small, and ends with all.
I'm also a 2a guy in California, and have watched restrictions on AR's go from a small bullet button conversion, to being forced to modify the entire rifle and pay more to do so.
I don't want to be negative, but history of restrictions never becomes loser, only gets tighter with the stroke of a pen, and no votes. This is only the gateway IMO. Keep flying what you love while you can.
Unfortunately, yes. However - there are a lot of legitimate toy drones in sub-250g class. Enough frivolous citations and court cases and the law will be tossed or not enforced. I do think that 5in drones are significantly more dangerous than sub 250g 3in drones. At the end of the day, reasonable safety is where I hope we land up
i find my self flying the grinderino alot more then 5" these days, however even if you are sub 250 according to the faa you need a part 107 and remote id to upload videos to youtube and social media.
Yeah, for me it's more about being able to fly safely in more places and explore tighter gaps. The rules are already too difficult to adhere to fully already and its just getting harder
Even when flown indoor?
@@winder6 nah the faa has no jurisdiction indoors, you can charge all the money you want and fly however you want indoors.
@@RyanQuellet fully agree, plus the noise isnt as aggressive as a 5"
@BOTGRINDER Thanks I thought as much.
Is there an estimate when the new vtx will come out?
3in sub250 on a 450 bat is getting me similar flight times as 5in builds.
My F3 is my favorite quad right now.
Hell yeah - I'm building a backup F3 next. Love them.
All I want right now is a 1 watt vtx in 3.5”
I have always liked micro racing, but I feel like there are a few key issues with it. Some that can be fixed, and others that cannot. One of the issues that can be fixed, is I see so many clubs that don't seem to have any sense of scale for micro racing. They build tracks that are sized for 5" racing, but then throw 2-3" quads on it and just massacre batteries. You want a micro to "feel like a 5in", you have to scale the track down accordingly so the relative speed against the track is the same. (Like our barnstormer series, its hard to tell what size quad it is because its matched to the environment). The other two big issues, that unfortunately can't overly be fixed, is wind and grass. I can honestly race up to about 15-20mph winds without really changing my line much with a 5". Around 15mph is pretty unruly for a micro. Doable, but you are getting tossed all over the place. Same with grass, a 5" can turtle out of quite a bit. Even after freshly mowed grass, a small divot in the ground can make a 3" unable to turtle.
Yeah, turtle out of grass and wind are physics issues that don't scale down to micro in a good way. I have found that the micro apex 3in has tall motors and I can turtle out of tall grass decently. Really - something 300g-350g in 3-3.5in size is really ideal to handle wind and grass
@@RyanQuelletRyan, any plans to add Rapid Fire style lost model finding capability to HDZ goggles? I live on a hay farm where avg grass height is 24” and RF always allowed me to find downed quads really fast. Although I do worry about vtx heat compared to analog, i.e, will they power off without airflow?
@@modquad18 The recent vtx's power off automatically if overheated. You can find a lost quad with hdzero by removing all antennas, then put a patch antenna on one jack. then sweep left to right until the signal improves. I've done this a couple times with good success
@@RyanQuellet Yeah, but if you are pushing 300-350g, then it defeats the purpose as its back in FAA land. Our Bladed Fury property has been approved as a FRIA, so we aren't overly worried about our race facility either way, but do still try to integrate in some micro racing when we can. (Obviously we do it all winter in the barn!)
@@RyanQuellet Thanks, that's a really good idea!
How do you get an HDzero Freestyle into an Apex Micro 3"?
I wonder how 😉
@@RyanQuellet Tease! 😁 What's the stack height?
Magic!
He's got a preproduction unit for the Freestyle v2. Still no details given but it seems to be a 20x20 board still at 1W power. No pics shown, all is speculation.
Nothing to do with remote ID bit I’ve been flying a 3.5” at race days and my times are on par with my 5” quads. Lots of fun
Been flying whoops up to 3 1/2 inch quads with HD Zero only. My only 5 inch quad left is my 3D analog. .[although that may change soon to HDzero] Been using Whooplite bundles and the race v2 vtx on the 3 inch. Scratching my head and would like to see what a big honkin Free style vtx looks like on a 3 inch quad. I have wished for a race vtx size that put out more than 200 mw somewhere in between the freestyle.
I personally prefer the smaller/lighter models for all the reasons you mentioned. Being able to fit all my gear in a bag the size of a large lunchbox (including soldering equip) is nirvana.
I agree 🙂
3+ inches FTW
I love 3.5" as well as 5" but to get that 3.5" to fly like I want, it has to be in the 350-450g range. Obviously well above 250g. Otherwise they just don't have that fling and feel more like a racing quad.
Would love something smaller/lighter than the 1W Freestyle - but more durable than the Race V3
I started flying 5 inchers. Lately I'v been flying toothpicks and 3 inches almost exclusively just because they fit my backyard better. Also to me it makes no sense that the regulators are looking at grams instead of mW. A clogged RF space is potentially much more dangerous than a few toys flying at tree level. Lots of uninformed decisions by the rulers.
Its okay to say there are too many fpv pilots for now. 5” will never die.
I would agree
Many good points, personally I hope 5 inch sticks around. I imagine many die hards will keep with it. It'll help push tech for the smaller drones to get closer to 5 inch performance (This talk about a 1w HDZero vtx in a 3-3.5 inch for example 😎). For the newer crowd just joining up however, maybe sub 250 will start becoming the prefered choice. I started last year on tiny whoops, and I still love them (Especially with HDZero now!). 2 New HD Systems really hit the market and I went HDZero and couldn't be happier, I'm sure DJI and WS are also great systems too (Love seeing 03 micros lately). I have a few 5 inch drones I've never flown yet. In Canada I just need to register and Pass my Basic, we don't have remote ID, yet... So I'm looking at keeping everything new sub 250. Personally I also like smaller size (depending on the arena), you find smaller gaps and spots to explore. Thanks for the video and brain food for thought. Cheers!
I’m in Vancouver, no one cares about licences or any paperwork. Everything that’s not a delivery or large camera drone is “sub250” here. If it’s self built they are considered toys.
No officer has ever pushed any issues on me, scolded me heavily, or even wrote any paperwork.
On movie sets you, MAY, get asked “everything legal?”
They don’t care, they just want you to have liability insurance just in case you do some major damage or cause a huge fire or something.
::Read my long book like comment on this video if you want my overall experience.
I'm finding new spots and gaps everyday with 3in freestyle. It's safer than 5in too, so I fly in more places
@@RyanQuelletthe Reynolds numbers for 3" make them better imo
Send one of those puppies to kebab so he can redo the 3 inch toothpick with a canopy for 90fps camera please
Interesting guy. I have no idea how to contact him. Hdzero does seem like a perfect system for toothpicks
ua-cam.com/video/pC1j_oR7X7I/v-deo.htmlsi=BG1jcvmOfM2G6p9P
Need 25x25 mounting and yeah, 3 - 3 1/2" can totally be viable.
@@Tensentities Does it have 30x30?
Tiny Trainer is fun. They are a bit fiddly to build, and a good 5 in is even more fun, but Tiny Trainer still rocks. I get tired of the rule-follower cliche. It's a loaded term. No one says that about the distinction between those who don't fly in airport airspace, or don't fly high above cities. In reality, some of those who weren't rule followers before RID got big fines, or were told they can't fly anymore.
I dunno what the rest of the hobby will do, but *I* am going sub-250g for exactly the remote ID reasons -- it's no less fun (for me) thank 5-inch, easier to fly within the confines of my property, and draws less attention.
I wish MultiGP would introduce and foster a 250g class -- would be cool to see what little micro-beast race quads evolve from that, and be easier to practice/participate without breaking rules.
This would really help push smaller drones to the "Feels like a 5 inch" more so, I second this!
Sounds good
Honestly wish I could fit the 1W VTX onto my Crux35 frame, but it'd stick out quite a bit. That being said, I've been making do just fine with 200mW so far... Would love to be able to bump up to 1W though so I can get better range and penetration than I already have now, would give me an additional level of security, though I am already pushing 200mW further than I used to be able to with analog, that additional resolution makes a huge difference.
I think it will fit soon. 200mW does perform better than analog at 200mW
@@RyanQuellet Agreed, it does feel like it. I've been holding off hope for a version 2 of the 1w transmitter so here's hoping. I want hdzero everything so the more the better =D
You want a discus then lol I think the 1 watt will fit I made the holes to mount it on the baseplate just haven't designed a camera mount yet that is protected well
I do love the 3.5 inch flight feel. Closely resembles 5 inch when the power to weight ratio is spot on. That being said there is nothing like the screaming power, sound, and feel of a 5 inch so i dont think it will die completely but I do think we will see more pilots with 3.5 inch in there fleet.
Well put
It could only be the future if an HDZero 1W woukd fit in a 3" 🤔
Oh, shoot? How did I manage to put a 1W in this little 3in then? :-) ;-)
I’m having problems fitting the OG 1W into a frame with a 30x30 stack, in 5” much less 3
I fly a holybro kopis racer 3 with hdzero (race v2 for the 20x20 size and its awesome) I also own a apex 5 inch and I have not flew the 5 inch in near a year with laws and restrictions your right with the way its going sub 250g is where the focus should be at and not 1 person has had a issue with me flying anywhere with the sub 250g drones I am based in UK so no remote I'd in place as of yet.
I love my 3.5, even more if I had more range. Still prefer my 5. I'm not trying to get stuck in a tree. I want that weight. Still looking for that pre-order on the new freestyle lol. Definitely opening up more build options
I have already moved to 3" for freestyle mostly. Using a Walksnail VTX though😢.When is the new 1 watt VTX coming??? Also I'm curious, what is the weight on your micro apex with that 1 watt VTX you have been teasing us with? I don't think my 3" quads are actually under 250 grams, but it wasn't actually my goal when building them, so its possible I could have gotten there with effort I'm sure.
This apex is 300g (I have other 3in under 250g). It's easier to fly I'm more places and 1W on it is great
Following. How did you fit a 30.5mm HDZ into the Apex 20mm frame? Please do a video do I can also build a 3" 1watt HDZ 👌😝
Yes! Please show us how to put a 1watt VTX in the micro apex. I'm anxiously waiting for this. 🤭🙏😉
5” Will surely turn into a small margin… Probably only professionals will stick to it. Sub250 3.5” will be the next king. HDzero has to come up with smaller form factors and lighter weight for ease of use. VTX sizes, power output and weight similar to analog is the only way HDzero and really dominate the market. Also HDzero has to improve the hardware quality, presently the hardware quality is very mediocre in comparison to nan o analog vtx’s like eachine nano vtx and tbs unify pro32 nano 1.1, these give amazing performance + higher power + very small form factor and negligible weight and they never fail ever. Slightly higher weight is acceptable for better hardware quality and power output.
How the heck are you keeping a Micro Apex frame under 250g with an action cam, HDZero Freestyle VTX, and 6S pack? I run analog, no action cam, and 4S packs and I still hit 280g!
It's 300g 😂. I'm playing around with some sub 250g 1w builds too - just not shown in this video. All of the other benefits still hold true at 300g - just not remoteID
@@RyanQuellet Ah, I get you. Been actually considering ditching that frame or maybe getting 4 inch arms for it. Just too heavy and I want better than 2.5 minutes of flight. I built one for my bro (Micro Alien) that was meant to be a light learner quad and it flies better than mine but goes way longer. Got a lot to learn myself it seems.
Hmm 🤔 …I’m in So California with the heavy rains. Just saw my Amazon driver drenched delivering my package.
If many are replaced with drones, I’m suspecting there will be a ton of delays during winter months with few drivers able to take on the workload.
But I’m sure Amazon has thought of that. lol😂
If it’s about safety and not politics, drones should not be flying in rain, snow, nor extremely high temperatures. Surely the FAA is concerned about our safety
haha, yes - it's all about "safety". FAA is just appealing to whoever gives them the most money. DoD is also very anti-drone and requires tracking absolutely everything
@@RyanQuellet Couldn’t agree more! 😂 Amazon bought and paid! lol jk…but not really
Agree 100%. But easier for me to say bc micros are personally kinda my wheelhouse. Will probably be hard for ppl that are about the 5” life to say it.
Seems like you’re mostly talking freestyle. You expect any change in racing?
Racing will probably transition to things like the tiny trainer also. Everything takes time of course, but I think it is very likely to happen in the next few years. I'm talking about the majority of people here, there will always be people that fly 5in and above
I fly 3'' because they fit everywhere and because I'm a shitty pilot 😂. I mount always 1404 motors, could you suggest something better?
Hdzero just needs to work on a smaller, lighter 1 watt. More options then.
Maybe they are 😉
Squeeeee@@RyanQuellet
If the 1 watt vtx didn’t weigh as much as a planet it wouldn’t be so bad 😂😂😂
Ignoring RID is no different then you running 1W...
One is ignoring FCC, the other is ignoring FAA. FAA is one you really, really don't want to mess with
I prefer running track over freestyle. I don't see the FAA or law enforcement going to a track to enforce the spoken requirement. Maybe karen. But we dont get Karens at Baylands where r/c reign supreme.
tegRIDy
I would agree with you. I used to fly 5" freestyle quads almost exclusively, but it's just too hard to fly wherever I want without having a Karen come over and tell me I can't fly here. Or even more annoying, call the cops. I get really bad panic attacks in those situations, so I've pretty much switched to flying tinywhoops or when I want more umph, I love my pyrodrone UL5. Ya, it's a 5" but it's sub250 and really quiet.
Right, I'm a lot more comfortable flying 3in these days. Quieter, safer, etc
if I had the money... I would pay some company to make an FC with an integrated HDZERO board and if trappy let me... i would make the same but with crossfire/tracer included. I've said it since I first tried HDZERO with the first whoop vtx... 3" is the future but then I tried 2.5" :)
It's not an economical problem, but a technical one: heat dissipation.
@@miquelmarti6537 yeah, I don't think a 'smaller' 1W VTX is a good idea for all that heat that needs dissipation. But for my special FC mentioned above :)... it can easily be a 200mW vtx. It still generates a lot of heat but not 1W heat.
@@tonomoto a 200mW digital vtx probably generates as much heat as a 800mW analog vtx, so I wouldn't expect to see any of these integrated inside AIO's in the near future. Of course it would be great, but we are far from it.
@@miquelmarti6537yeah, i don't have the money... we are very far from it ;)
YEP...SOUNDS POSITIVE TO ME ...STOP WORRYING OVER RID , SUB 250 LESS STRESS....
Makes no sense at all and just demonstrates an HDZero bias. 1Watt now goes 'further' in the 3.5" realm? No it goes the same as on a 5" - and it's still too big and heavy. Yes I understand your point but not everyone sees FPV thru an HDZero prism (which represents a tiny part of the market). It doesn't seem sensible to carry the weight of a HDZero 1 watt vtx on a 3.5". 5" will be sticking around - the market will adjust to it. People want it...and same with 3.5"...
Maybe I've got something you don't know about yet 😉
I think I may have seen it...which is great news and I hope it helps widen the market for HDZero... @@RyanQuellet
I think you have something but we know about.. just can't see it... you holding out man you holding out@@RyanQuellet
Very interesting info. New smaller 1W HDZERO VTX in near (I hope) future? It's so exciting thought. Anyway 3 inch or 3,5 inch isn't the same quad like 5 inch. Bigger props, bigger motors, bigger accelaration, bigger smile on face, bigger "distance eater".
hm I've actually found my crux35 gives a greater feeling of speed than my 5" weird but true. but yeah they are different machines fly different but you'd feel at home on either@@4motors969
