No wonder out of state clients want to send you cars, In-shop rebuilds are unheard of here. That level of knowledge and work, backed by good parts availability? wOw Jonny.... Legendary :-)
There's no way I'll do an in-shop rebuild on a modern engine; I'll get a reman with a good warranty first. You need to send the block & head(s) to a machine shop to get checked out, and heaven help you if you pay for the disassembly only to find out that the cylinder walls are trashed
@@williamegler8771 Also goes for similar priced German models... parts are just always more expensive, just look at the prices for a Golf or a Mini compared to equivalent models from Japan... parts are usually twice the price AND German cars are harder to work on so more hours.
It's really great to see that as well as the diagnosis skills Jonny has the ability to strip down and rebuild engines in shop, a lot of shops just want to be parts exchangers and only fit complete engines rather than carry out a full rebuild themselves. Excellent work from you Jonny, great skill set, well done Ninja.
It’s cool that you will rebuild motors. Not too many shops do that any more, even specialty shops. For that matter, there are very few engine machine shops that are worth more than a warm bucket of spit any more, for more particular engines. DAMHIKT.
That's got to be a fun job, get a job from someone else, we took it apart and it still don't work. So here in no particular order are all the parts, hopefully everything is still there.
That was a pleasure to watch. I’m no mechanic by any stretch, just a diy guy with some jack stands and some cardboard to lay on. I’m certain that I would have had more than a few bolts clips etc. leftover after that job. Wish I had access to a mechanic like Johnny, seems like a nice guy to do business with.
I like how you usually say what size and what type of fastener it is when you’re removing a bolt or screw or whatever. Also always enjoy learning about new and unique tools you use. I like adding tools to my collection.
Another great video. Can I ask why you removed the front of the car to pull the engine vs. using your powertrain table and lower as an assembly? What criteria do you evaluate when deciding between dropping the assembly out the bottom vs. splitting and taking out the top. I ask because i am waffling on getting a lift table for my shop. Thanks Mike
German cars are great 👍 However The owners of said german cars, are the whole reason they have such expensive bills... Lack of proper maintenance, euro cars can take alot of abuse. German cars cannot take alot of neglect. Lack of owner intelligence mt friends... It boils down to that and nothing else
BMW Mercedes infinity Audi money pits stay away from them unless you fix cars yourself or you have money to throw away and you don't care but the worst vehicle is the jaguar i don't care what anyone else says
The car ninja is a great mecanic, for the blower motor sometimes you only need to put penetrating oil on the shaft to avoid replacing the entire unit, i have a video on my channel that explains how to diagnose and replace / repair the blower motor if anyone is interested.
true - but those engines had a problem with oil return holes for the oil srape ring being too small from facorty those would collect oil crud and lock up - what causes the piston ring to no longer function propperly and result in the really high oil consumption VW revised the engine after the problem became apperant - but it will happen to any early model engine sooner or later the longlife oil change intervals additionally hasten the process
Very good businessman.... BMW's break down all the time and cost a lot to fix... as long stupid ppl keeping buying German Car Ninja will always CASH OUT...
yes - trim the ends when you fit the ring into the cylinder bore you need to have a certain gap (for expansion under heat), when the ring is on the upper side of the tolerance the gap my be to small and you would have exorbitant wear and could ruin the cylinder bore by digging into it - so you widen the gap to bring it into spec when fitted in the cylinder
People should not buy German cars if they can’t afford new and always assume something we’ll go wrong. I own two Mercedes and are wonderful cars just have to maintain them to a tee

I see some older BMW's in the background, it's cool that you guys work on those. Seems like a lot of Euro shops in my area outright refuse to touch anything before the year 2000.
It's not BMW specific, A lot of shops won't work on anything that doesn't have at least an OBD-II diagnostic port. Parts availability can be a major issue. I want to see more about that late E21/early E30 I saw up on the lift
My 2014 Tiguan has 210000 miles: three times intake de carb. Steering rack failure. Other than that, normal maintenance. Be sure to maintain oil levels. Weekly check, is what I do, since it is driven a lot as you can see.
It's not that they can't rebuild the motors... it's that after the price for the new parts and then the labor of doing the whole rebuild, you'd be better off just buying another motor out of a wrecked car and calling it a day. Most folks don't want a car for 20 years and 300,000 miles, just get them further down the road and they'll dump it later.
There’s a reason I stay away from Audi. My 97 BMW has been ultra reliable and pulls like a freight rain. It consumes some oil but it’s like 1 qt per 1,000 miles or $5. Been running great for 27 years!!

Along with being a guru, Car Ninja seems to have one if the best attitudes I've ever seen. There's hope for humanity!!
German cars are so nice to drive until you get the repair bill.
Expensive cars have expensive parts maintenance and repair costs.
Can't drive a BMW or a Mercedes on a Hyundai Kia budget.
For the cost of high end German cars, the reliability should be much better, you shouldn’t have the repairs in the first place.

Very few people would replace pistons, you are a master for doing it. Most shops would r&r a long block.

Jonni. TODAY were going to rebuild the engine.

Sad that a 2015 Audi needed this work. Wonder what the mileage is on that car?
true - but those engines had a problem with oil return holes for the oil srape ring being too small from facorty

251,379 according to another comment. There was a short glimpse of the odometer. I saw it was 250+K but didn't pause to get the exact mileage.
@mathewfullerton8577 wrong. That 250k mile was a white BMW, not the audi.

How do you resize a ring?

yes - trim the ends
when you fit the ring into the cylinder bore you need to have a certain gap (for expansion under heat),
when the ring is on the upper side of the tolerance the gap my be to small and you would have exorbitant wear and could ruin the cylinder bore by digging into it
- so you widen the gap to bring it into spec when fitted in the cylinder
