  • Today's trail review takes us to the West Desert of Utah, inside the Great Basin area of the long departed Lake Bonneville.
In the shadow of the southern half of the House Range, near Notch Peak, is Hell'n Moriah Canyon. A somewhat easy 20 mile route down into a sheer canyon valley, which makes this side-trail worthwhile.
The trail is 20 miles long and offers good scenery, but in the spring time growth can make the trail hard to see (despite how easy it looks from drone footage). This is a stock 4wd friendly route, 4-lo for speed control and good tires are a requirement in the West Desert.
We took the LX470 and had a Toyota Tundra Platinum with us and did fairly well (except for the 30-point turns!)

One of my favorite areas in Utah. The best part of Notch Peak other than the huge cliff face, is the really old bristlecone pine stand just below the summit.
Amasa Valley to the north is also a fun trip with some pleasant Aspen stands and higher altitude camping.

There are some cool gems tucked away in those great basin mountain ranges.
