I hate hate HATE white trim, its in nearly every single house I've been viewing and reminds me of apartments. It just feels so default at this point. Beautiful natural wood or these cool new accent colors are amazing!
Picking out colors is very stressful, but you help to minimize it. I appreciate your giving us permission to look outside the box. It’s not enough to pick out a color you love, but if you know you can mix and match hues it does help to reduce the anxiety. Thanks James! Note: I have a East facing mstr. Bdrm which is very well lit, and the on suite has very cool gray tones tones. My dilemma was how to combine the cool bthrm hues with my warmer Berber carpet and cherry wood bedrm set! It’s been very stressful. I thought to use Decorators White on walls and Chalk White on ceiling with perhaps Silver Mist and Witching Hour on trims. The idea that I can combine both cool and warm tones I think I can pull it off. I want a fresh light feeling, although most of my house leans warmer tones. This bdrm is at the end of a muted yellowish hallway, and some of it can be seen from the interior living space. Any guidance would be appreciated!!!😥😐
Hi there Carolyn, thanks for the comment! Have a look at Plaster of Paris. Because of its many tints, it can really help tie everything together. ua-cam.com/video/B2z4VnWg60k/v-deo.html
@@thepaintpeople Thank you so much James!! I don’t want to be a bother, but would you paint the ceiling and trim the same or in different sheen? , or use Super White, or Decorators White? Just to note: Our molding and closet doors are outdated and not attractive. Thank you Again!!!!❤️
Big fan of a dark trim color that provides structure for the room, rest for the eye, enhances the big picture, all without the harshness of black. For me, an all white room just … floats away like cotton candy looks like it would. Like going under on the gurney in the OR.
Excellent guidelines. Though at times you appeared to hedge and appear to endorse dark trim colors for only special cases. Hope you will visit this topic several more times particularly talking about the Benjamin Moore Williamsburg colors and how they are used in colonial homes.
Finnie Gray is a color very similar to that used in the Carter’s Grove mansion near Colonial Williamsburg. We have used this color on trim in a very colonial decor for years paired with a warm white wall color to good effect. Philadelphia Cream is another color often shown on trim in colonial homes. Hope you can show us other dark trim and off white wall color combinations.
I have an open plan house and would like to paint one room dark blue, including the trim. How do you paint one room's trim dark when it flows through the rest of the house.
Thanks for all the info, my fav color is Evergreen fog, and could you please tell me what color (light) to be a good ascent color for opposite walls. I selected Evergreen fog with repose gray and my floor color is Maple oak and cabinets are Gray stain.
Evergreen Fog is great and goes well with earthy neutrals, creams, browns, and oranges. For something lighter, have a look at Shoji White to bring in some warmth or Neutral Ground.
I chose trim that has a 5.9 lrv and a main paint that is 55.7 lrv is that too much. I chose Deepest River and Irish moor both valspar. D.R. is a black base and I.M. is a gray base. My flooring is grayish with a hint of brown. Any recommendations or is that too big a difference I'm terrible at picking out colors 😕
@@thepaintpeople absolutely, for me living in the Caribbean I love colour, used right of course(but then “right”),is all relative, lol and I love how rich the dark coloured trim looks,as you say all personal taste,I look forward to more helpful videos
I just painted my kitchen cabinets muted sage by behr and I have old fashion tounge and groove wainscoting but I cannot figure out what color to paint it. My walls are warm white and I just feel stuck on the trim and wainscoting
Painting it the same color as the walls is cool if you want something contemporary, but you could also consider painting it a couple shades lighter or darker than your wall color if you want more contrast but don't want to introduce any other colors to your palette. If you're feeling bolder, look around your place and see if there are other colors from your decor you want to pick up on, lots of colors pair well with warm white. Have fun!
I found you when I was repainting my house and still listen to it for the soothing voice it’s so reassuring… then I just found your royal fragrance when I googled musc ravageur…which is one of my favorite topics of UA-cam !! Jackpot!! It’s the same person, right?!

I love darker trim colors on house exteriors as well. It can look very elegant.
"A chessboard level of contrast"
Best description ever!
And hilarious!
Let's just say my cheese game is fire lol!

Great metaphors! It is ultimately how you feel in the room right? Go with what makes you feel good!
Your haircut and beard trim are truly on point! I love wrought iron! Gentleman’s Gray or Hague Blue would be great trim colors IMHO.
Aw, thank you! You all keep me on my toes!
Colonial style houses make great use of dark colored or dramatic colored trim.
Thanks bro, very helpful. Funny you mentioned Ben Moores's Chantilly Lace. I'm going over Chantilly with Ben Moore's Soot.

Thanks for this Tom!
yes! this is hard to find.
Thank you so much for these awesome tips! This video is super dope. Can't wait to use this advice to pick out my own trim color :D
Awesome, let us know how it turns out!

Dark looks so beautiful
I’ve always gone for darker trim colors. Why? I have four dogs. Duh.
I'm seriously considering a darker gray trim in my bathroom! Paint the vanity the same color too.
I love green trim.

Thanks much! Everybody else has either off white or wood grain trim...but then I'm not everybody else 😁
Exactly! ;) Be YOU!

hey james, how about if i paint my walls low sheen eggshell naval, and go with high gloss naval on trim? so tone on tone?
I love tone on tone. And I love the boldness of high gloss. Sexy!
What do you think about ultra high gloss black trim and a dark matte or eggshell wall color?

Lovesies.. definitely thought about it and now gonna think about it again hmmm 🤔😏
We love a good think!
Can extra white be used as a trim for agreeable gray and naval ?
Yes absolutely. SW actually pairs extra white and agreeable gray. And extra white goes great with blues. Have fun!
Thank you 😊
Do you think it’s a good idea to choose a trim based on the style and era in which your home was built?
I would say it’s definitely worth considering!
It’s all personal taste. Some people prefer to stick to the original style, and some people prefer something more eclectic.

Needs more visual examples of the points you are emphasizing.
Thanks for the feedback!
I agree
Yep, less chatting… lol
I painted my walls tony taupe, what would be a good trim color. I was leaning towards black
Have you looked at SW Iron Ore?
No I haven't. Would I paint the doors the same color?
I'm dying to paint all the trim in foyer.
Dooooo it!
Beautiful

Hey thanks Jerry! I appreciate that!
But what if we *don’t* have nice trim carpentry!?
Lead with your strengths lol!
Does your trim have to match your doors???
When are we going to get another collab with Nick Lewis!?
Noted! :)
I have agreeable Gray in the whole house light gray wood floors what color trim would you do for dark trim?
