hello friends!! a few of you have already commented this, but I did want to clear up my misused of the word "crochet" in this video: the motion I was doing was actually "hand knitting" - as you can tell, I'm still a noob at all this but thank you everyone for correcting me!! 🙈💗
I am addicted to yarn. I love to crochet. I have over $800 stash. When I want to make something and no money I go to my storage. I have about 18 containers with yarn. I've been collecting for 9 years. Plus I have a huge box of hooks and knitting needles. I'm older and don't go many places so it's really a sanity saver.
As a very experienced knitter, I give you high fives for your ingenuity, problem solving and creativity! If you can figure out how to make a garment having never knitted in your life and just using your hands, you would pick up knitting with needles with no problems! Great job!
@sarahpan DO NOT WASH IT!!! I'm sorry to bring you the bad news when you did such a good job, but you didn't use yarn, you used roving, thats the stuff that gets turned into yarn. Unfortunately this cardigan isn't going to hold together for a long time and it's going to pick up a lot of stuff. Importantly if you wash it you will felt it, it will turn into a solid, stiff piece and will also shrink a little. Maybe think of this as a practice run if you really love it or as a photography piece if you don't want to remake it. Keep it inside a protective bag when storing.
I literally just watched knitters explain how wasteful using rover is with this trend. You get to use it a few times? dirt particles easily stick to it, it's easily gonna break apart, and when you wash it, it's gonna get really stiff. So yeah, according to her, PRICEY is the word because after spending all that money, it's gonna go straight to the trash.
Hi Sarah, you did a really good description of the process, and I hope the viewers who are also new to yarn crafting took note of all the things you learnt along the way. Making things from yarn can be very pleasurable and you dived right in, and hopefully if you do any more you will use the experience gained from this piece eg, use yarn as opposed to roving, measure yourself to get a better idea of what size you need to make, have an idea of the way the pieces fit round you, and use a yarn type that you find comfortable on your skin, and something that you find pleasurable to work with long enough to complete a piece. The stitches you made were very even which is part of the charm of a well made piece, and you have a good eye for colour (liked the way the sweater toned with your hair!) The need to have something immediately is something crafters have to overcome as the key to making something yourself is delayed gratification (!) but the payoff is you will end up with something unique to you and the satisfaction of having made it yourself. Well done for completing your item, not something everyone achieves first time out, hope you will now feel confident enough to tackle other projects. Making stuff is good for the soul, enjoy!
Hi! Just FYI you need to be very careful with this sweater. The yarn you are using is basically roving (unspun yarn). Hand wash in cold water. Don't wring it out. Lay flat to dry. If you snag on something be very careful. Don't pull. You'll break the yarn. You did a good job. Just be careful with this sweater. If you are it will last a long time.
Stuff to know about roving/unspun yarn/the material Sarah used to knit this: -it is hella weak, it’ll break apart super easily -washing it can break your washer -it gets MAD dirty -even gentle animals can tear it up -it gets ruined in the washer/dryer anyways
hiya! just a smol tip: what ur making is more similar to knitting than crochet. knitting will produce those v shaped stitches that you see, whereas crochet stitches are more like knots. nevertheless, the sweater looks great!
ahh thank you for the tip! I definitely conflated the two when I was learning how to do all this so I might've incorrectly coined the term "crochet" here and there - i'll definitely be more conscious in future videos 😅 and I really appreciate the heads up!
You can crochet those v stitches texture! Although it produces a thicker fabric. Crochet in general creates a thicker fabric than knit (and I think crochet is more versatile and easier to pattern)
I doubt the yarn will hold up over time, theres and yours, because the yarn doesnt have any structure, yarn like that, which is basically just the hair itself, will break down and fall apart. Those chunky knit blankets and sweaters end up being way to expensive to make with not much pay off. At least they are cute tho!!
Exactly what i was thinking when I saw that the yarn wasnt spun... I can only imagine how this will look after a month. Throwing it in the wash and dryer will only felt it and shrink it
I would be extremely surprised if this didn’t pill all over after the first wear. I hate that Pinterest and others are telling people who don’t know better to use this giant yarn to make things. It’s so expensive. :(
@@dazedandcontent7079 the name of this type of thick yarn is classed as 'super chunky' (silly, but it is the official name). If you look up super-chunky yarn on eBay/Amazon/yarn shops then you should be able to find this type of yarn to use. If it looks like two strands of yarn twisting around each other, then this is a more sturdier yarn to use for your project - hope this helps!
Absolutely in love with the results ! I am a compulsive crocheter (I literally crochet with no goal and undo my pieces to reuse the yarn) I guess I'll try to make a chunky cardigan like this when I'll have saved money to buy these chunky yarn (expensive compared to what I earn but still so satisfying !!)
Omg you did such a good job, it was so hard to hear your mom was so harsh about how you did it, which made you feel like you had to redo it. Ugh I just wanna give you a hug. You did an incredible job and it made me want to try to knit a big sweater like this cause idk why but crocheting scares me lol
Just a warning to beginners: If you are ever thinking of hand knitting(knitting with your hands instead of using needles) I recommend not doing that because the ending of the product might look well but it won't hold up. It could be a couple uses and it'll fall apart.
This video is so relaxing to watch (especially when ur procrastinating bc uni is stressful af) loved the editing! It actually turned out so cute, it reminds me of icecream 🍦 That juggling attempt in the intro was adorable haha
You did so well. I love knitting and have not tried garment yet. I am working on doing baby garments first cause it is great practice. Anyway if you redo it measure yourself or at least with this box style construction measure from shoulder to shoulder and add about 2-4 inches depending on how oversize you want it. That way when you do front panels you have room for the neck opening. The colors are cute and looks so cute on you. You did awesome and don't be discouraged.☺
I liked the sweater very much and while your video plays I have been working for 7 hours redoing a blanket sweater. I made it way to big now I'm almost finished. Whew. My eyes are burning. Anyway redo your sweater till it's perfect you won't regret it.
Thats so cute 🥺 i'm not sure what kind of yarn you used, but I watched a video where someone knitted a little square with roving wool like those huge blankets you see on Pinterest, and within a week on their couch, the entire square fluffed apart, and got a bunch of stuff stuck in it, and after they washes and dried it, it got all hard and gross, so be careful with your sweater if the yarn pulls apart easily!
In-store yarn stocks have definitely been a struggle since the pandemic started!! I started crocheting a couple years ago and you can bet I've been doing a lot more since I'm home all the damn time!
How does this hold up so far? The "yarn" doesn't seem like it has much structure. In those cases knitted or crochet pieces will end up like trash quite fast. I hope, in this case it does hold up after so many hours of work put in.

Can you post an update soon how the sweater is after a month?? Also what fibre material is your yarn? Is it a blend? I dont know what yarn they usually use to make those sweaters but I dont think you should do this using animal fibers (maybe a blend is fine; but to be safe dont do it). Use cotton, acrylic, or whatevers. Just not wools!!! Your sweater will be nasty and felted in a weak. Also I dont recommend using yarn that loose with natural fibres. Natural fibres are naturally short; so without plying, your yarn will pill and break FAST. I guess the only way you can do this is with synthetic materials (which can still feel soft!).
ooh wow this is so cool! it looks like knitting but seems easier. lol my hands sweat like crazy with i do those fuzzy furry stitching things. the color coordination that u picked is so pretty. this video is indeed saving u money for the cardigan and earning u some ad sense hhahaa. i love it. so cool to see cool refreshing content
