I actually like when people do 8.3 and stuff, because lets be real, if something isn't completely trash, people tend to never go under 7. So you'll see people putting series as 8s or 9s, when they vary heavily in quality, even in that person's mind. The decimal points give more precise feelings.
My pet peeve would be how critical people become about collections that aren't their own. The best example in recent times would be those Reddit post people were shitting on because they don't have x, y, or z series. This only seems to happen in the manga community and not in the BookTok/BookTube community, granted I'm not saying that it doesn't happen but personally I haven't seen it before.
You don’t have Berserk in your collection?! Then it’s not really a manga collection at all! For real, everyone has different taste and there’s no right way to collect. Let people read the series they wanna read!
The main reason I don't collect manga from popular series such Naruto and One Piece is that they are so long. I don't have the self-space to collect One Piece.
Totally agree on that one expensive issue of a collection. For example, I really want to buy 'Magical Girl Apocalypse', but the price of Vol 4 is preventing me from buying the rest.
OOP MANGA, WHY IS UBEL BLATT OOP ARRGHHHH (Vols 4, 9, 10 T___T) but yes, shared a lot of these pet peeves, any collector space has a population of people that are snobbish and think they're better than others, we're all just collecting books at the end of the day it ain't that serious hahaha also I AGREE WITH THE BOX SET TAKE like to me, that's the point of having a box, to store them haha
The way i rate things is like this Everything is on a scale of 1-10, but i use quarter decimals. Like 8.25, 8.5, 8.75, 9, etc. It is literally just how im feeling. It just makes it easier to compare them to me
I feel personally attacked about the box sets point lmfao. Also I hold the complete opposite opinion, I find it a disgusting aesthetic to be displaying these large boxes on bookshelves, or if used as storage, a waste in potential to have them alongside your other series. Great video 🤣🤣🤣
I only took Tokyo ghoul out of the box cause at the time RE boxset wasnt available for a good price that was above retail. But yeah I keep em in the box usually but not you have me thinking
I recently started relating with pet peeve #1 cuz I started collecting Toriko, I've ordered all the in-print volumes tho some are out of stock yet still in print so but once I get all of those there's still 4 volumes that are horribly expensive and I legit just decided I'm gonna read those chunks of chapters online cuz it's just not worth it for me
bagging manga is pretty weird but its like a culture thing imo. In mexico everyone bags their manga because the publishers sell it that way, and then people decided that's the way it is and keep it up
Sadly when I started collecting manga in my country, I didn't realise some manga it's hard to find (includes those not popular one). It's impossible for me to find vol. 11 of The Heroic Legends of Arslan here and it's not even a very old manga. The only way to find it it's in US bookstores (sometimes when watch manga shopping, I saw the volume in the store). So sad, and vol. 11 is my favourite cover as well.
Same here, I live in Ireland & I can only get mainstream volumes that I buy from online bookshops in the UK. Even buying one book from the US gets expensive, because the shipping will be expensive, then it’ll have customs charges.
My Hikaru no go set had quite a few volumes with that laminated cover. Successfully restored everyone of them. Was gonna film the process but figured nobody would care. *It is tedious but worth it*
I would say my biggest pet peeves is price for certain volumes. I understand is a vol been oop for more than 20yrs, but if it less than 7 yrs i don't think it should be over $300. Another one is bandwagon, i don't like the idea of collecting based on "everyone has it, so i guess i should" mind set. I don't mind collecting a series that is popular, but i want to get because I'm interested.
I have been collecting a rare/expensive series and I saw a copy of one of the volumes for cover price in “good” condition. I got it and it was not only an ex library copy (I don’t care that much, it just wasn’t advertised), it was an ex library copy that they had turned into a hard cover 💀 I don’t know how to revert it and now I just have this weird jimmy rigged hard cover sticking out from the other books 😭
Him calling me out about box sets Me: pauses video right away to comment! I only buy the box set because yes, it’s cheap- and I love the spines on the shelf. I just toss the box, I never like the art on them lol sorry!! I’ll forever remember this video when tossing out a box set box haha 😂
nice vid. personally my manga pet peeves are I hate ex library covers w/ stickers or the original price stickers on em like from borders books. it looks ugly covers part of the manga which I feel ruins the overall owning experience, never had a plastic wrapped on but did have one in a thick plastic sleeve that I personally found neat. the box set argument I prefer to see em out of the box since it can be alll with our other mangas. Totally with you on the one or 2 volume being super pricey I also hate when some volumes top logos are changed in reprints or just changes midway in release.
that decimal thing funny coz i did that today 😂personally i just say it coz the number sounds better w the series in my head not coz the rating is like super duper accurate
I don't rate things. I usually just leave it at whether I like something or not. That being said, I understand why people use decimals. While some do probably put on airs, I think many only rate things for their own reference. At some point they probably run into cases where they've given out so much of one score that it fails to really indicate anything about how they felt compared to other works of the same score. Some people might start with half scores, but over time, I think people find those aren't enough OOP is annoying. I wish they'd reprint Bokurano already (It's ridiculous) and though not technically out of print, I've been sitting with a Negima collection that's missing volume 29 for ages (Not really looking to spend 100 bucks for it) One of my pet peeves, that kind of goes along with the limited space problems, is the different sizing of manga. In particular the heights of some manga being different than others, bothers me a lot when I'm trying to store/shelve things. Another is dull uninteresting spines. I've got a few series that only seem to show the name and the number and it just feels wrong.
You need to put actual shelves on your wall, not book cases, this way you can cover every inch of your walls with books, that’s what I’m doing. You’ll have space for your box sets then. I have over 1,000 volumes now & a few more spaces left on my walls for shelves.
2:41 i have a some old library manga with that cover thingy, and its in HORRIBLE condition just because of that (after all, it was only $2) And i completely agree with that lol 😂
yeahh I'm one of these who takes the manga out of the box ahaha but I've no more space available so I'll probably end up putting them back in the boxes
So don’t bag your manga, box it, got it haha, don’t have an ugly bag on your shelf, have a large box on your shelf, if you even have a shelf that it fits on, usually you’ll have it thrown on the top of the bookcase. Yea that box set peeve is ridiculous, I’m buying the box set to easily buy all the volumes I want, usually for cheaper than to buy them in singles, I’m not buying it to leave in a box, and then every time I want to read a volume I have to lift the box down, open it and take out the volume, then lift the box back up. And having all the volumes of One Piece on my shelf in a long line looks much better than having 4 boxes up there.
I have to think that the ones furiously bagging their manga is for future future sells. The shoe collection industry is notorious for this but justly so.
I come from a tropical country. Covering paper with plastic helps slow down the browning process. Has to be good plastic though. People who live in America are just annoyed at bagging because the rate of how paper browns is slower. Thus, they never see the benefit of it over time. It's easier for Americans to notice sunfading first.
That listing you shown of Arpeggio of Blue Steel being OOP, I just bought that exact bundle on 17th for $40 on eBay 🤣 Yes like you said I have 1-19 but missing 4,6 and 10 be ause there REALLY expensive !
Whewwwwww I have box sets and singles also x2 of the series and that does not bug him lol. ( Im lazy and need to sell them but keep forgetting) Lets see using points between 8-9 etc makes sense cause not everything is a 8 you may have two 8s and having one 8.5 shows its better and closer to 9 etc. I dont use bags and never will even on a $200+ volume ever. BUT you say thats dumb to use bags but its dumb to have manga outside the box set because it can get damaged lololol. Plus buying the set cheap and displaying the awesome spines instead of a giant naruto face etc is cool sometimes. I need space and have almost 30 box sets so I cant (even though I have double of some like I said lol) My biggest pet peeve is that you dont have thunderbolt (best gundam manga in print) by the origin smh
I understand the irony of me saying protect your manga with box sets, but not with bags 😂 The difference is going out of your way, spending time and money to make your collection look ugly versus storing the books as intended. As for Thunderbolt… one day
Yea your first issue I don’t have an issue with, because I can’t get any of it, never mind that one volume. I live in Ireland and I can’t get any of those Rurouni Kenshin Vizbigs, I could only get the 3-in-1’s.
I feel like the unique rating systems spiraled out of control thanks to people like Anthony Fantano and food reviewers who use ratings like "I give this Big Mac 5 Whoppers out of 10." Some rating systems do get really out of hand. My personal pet peeve is when someone organizes their volumes from right to left like it's some sort of countdown.
How much did you pay for your lone wolf and cubs singles? I just found a full set 1-28 great condition for 330 just wondering if you think that’s a good price
Thats a pretty fair price in todays market I’d say. It’s funny cuz I honestly can’t remember how or where I got my set. The FIRST set I had (and sold) I got from HPB for 5 bucks a piece 😅
4:02 bruh, u and me both. Never said anything out loud before, but when people do this, I just think "yup, so this person's trying to look all intellectual and sophisticated with their unnecessary and meaningless decimal point." 😆
I’ve seen some people take the Akira & pandora hearts books out of the box like WTF are you doing??? The shounen boxes are more understandable especially for younger people who probably don’t have a lot.
Anti-bag elitists are my pet peeve. Literally costs 5 bucks for 100 of them, prevents shelf wear especially if you move your collection around a lot. Slows down the oxidation process, makes dusting easier. Theres a reason comic collectors all use acid free bags for prolonged storage so why would it be any different for manga? And properly sized bags dont detract from aesthetics it basically blends in.
My biggest pet peeve is people bitching about series that are available online to be in print. Companies don’t do what their buyers want they have a literal duty by law to maximize profit for stock owners and will only take decisions that to that. Be more selective with what u buy is my point.
What are YOUR manga pet peeves? Also am I tripping about the box set one or nah 😂
I take my manga out of my boxsets. I just do it cause I like to see the manga on my shelves
Same, I take everything out and put the boxes in the attic, they look much better on the shelf.
Same I put my boxes on display on top of my shelves and put the books with the library
I put the boxes in between the manga i take out of the boxes oops
Why not
I actually like when people do 8.3 and stuff, because lets be real, if something isn't completely trash, people tend to never go under 7. So you'll see people putting series as 8s or 9s, when they vary heavily in quality, even in that person's mind. The decimal points give more precise feelings.
Totally agree. The manga in my box sets are in a helluva lot better condition than the one’s on my shelf.

i feel you on the boxsets... im debating selling some manga and buying the boxsets to save space lol
I would 100% recommend, plus you get some cool artwork to display!
Totally agree on that one expensive issue of a collection. For example, I really want to buy 'Magical Girl Apocalypse', but the price of Vol 4 is preventing me from buying the rest.
We’ll get through this together 💪

In terms of spacing, i am not sure your shelf on the right is big enough but have you considered using a rise so you have two rows of manga?
