Good lord.. He is so dynamic in his attacks and layoffs. Powerful and gentle ! What a great guitarist. People often say that he is under-appreciated and under-rated.. I kinda disagree. I think quality musicians and passionate guitar players recognize his talent. He's one of the "Greats". When a Journey song shows up on my radio I shut my pickup truck's window and actually listen. Once its over I roll down the window and move on with my day. Good Stuff !
So underrated! Without a doubt one of my all time favorite players. What i always loved about his playing is it ALWAYS has feel and melody! Most guys these days just dont get it, they are all speed and no substance. Like the Olympics or something? How did guitar become a sport in where the faster you are the better????
Pc Gaming 5150 : He actually isn't underrated at all. Carlos Santana wanted him in his band long before he had a name. I've heard people like Clapton mention him about the same time. He has always been talented even as a teen. I'm an old fart so I remember the days . Take care!
One of my all time favorite guitarists. We just saw him again in Virginia Beach and I'm always amazed by the emotion he brings to his playing...Rock On Neal!!!
THIS VIDEO IS THE KIND OF THING THAT UA-cam WAS MADE FOR ! ~I love it to be able to watch the ACTUAL stars play some of their classic (if not ICONIC) instrument parts, for others to be able watch repeatedly and LEARN FROM. Its so much better than watching some "Joe Shmoe" play how he THINKS the part should go. Hitherto, the best a person could do was to go to a concert, and strain with binoculars to try to catch what you could on that one time. ALL the great players should do videos like these.
One of the masters of the guitar and a man who has lead a good clean meaningful life. I have enjoyed his playing from day dot when I first heard wheel in the sky.
Started with Santana; eventually making his way to Journey...I'm a Hendrix fan, and yes, there's definitely a Hendrix influence...cheeze, who wouldn't be, especially during that time...but Neal's his own guy, definitely underrated by armchair axes like us; an absolutely amazing master of the strings...it's cool to know that he, EVH and Steve Lukather would often trade and jam together impromptu.
Neal, I knew you were a great player but damn! It's really nice to see you playing this piece by yourself. What a great style you have. It sounds perfect. Your why that band rocks.
his chordal playing is awesome, it shows what a consummate guitarist he is, he can do everything, from the meanest licks high up on the fret to just picking an open D chord.
Will folks stop saying he’s underrated, do you know what tHat means ! Neil is probably one on the top 5 rock players of all time, he’s not underrated in any way shape or form. Period!
I think when people say he is underrated...it's because you don't hear him mentioned much. It's usually music and/or guitar aficionados who know what a great player he is. With that group of people he is definitely not underrated.
well, i was drinking, and i said is enough, but man, when I see this video i said my self, carry on dude, drink so much and feel the power of schon, MASTER
Neal really hit it out of tha park for me on this one tune, because it has probably the best rock solo I ever heard and he tone represents the pinnacle of Strat neck pickup tone. Funny, I never liked Journey growing up, but I LOVED this song and, particularly, Neal's contribution to it
I recently posted my cover of :Santana"'s "Song of the Wind", it's funny, I played this song back in '74 , and all this time I thought it was Santana playing. It made me buy all his records ( "Love Devotion and Surrender","Welcome"), and I felt I never heard that sound again, was so disappointed, all those albums. Now I know that Neil Schon played ALL of Song of the Wind, 30+ years later, I now know whose albums to buy! Not only was he a "backup" to Santana, he was never given credit for SOTW.
@pswallace saw them in concert a few years ago when def leppard was with them and he will never change one of the best guitar players of all times and he doesnt need a "hollywood star" so many people have listened to journey and might not even know who he is but they know they like it and thats all the matters..
...and that's far more priceless that being able to play a gabillion notes per second. Very insightful man. All, STOP HATING ON NEAL's Java-the-Hut-gut! It's adorable....in a kind of "Honey, look at that guys' rolls!" kind of way ...
And with any luck, one of these days we are going to find that one cameraman who will just stand still, and show us the whole individual straight-on, as opposed to always moving the bloody camera!!
I agree with you, man. Actually, it makes me sad that people feel they have to put Carlos down to exalt Neil. They are both awesome. I'll never forget when Santana III came out. Obviously Carlos thought he was great - hell, he was child prodigy, really, I am exactly his age and I remember at 16, 17 we were all blown away. Those 2 albums and what he Carlos did on that Luis Gasca album can't be beat if you ask me.
This is what I missed on the Eclipse album. This soulful and melodic playing and more importantly, solo's that were more singable. The solo's on Eclipse were more of the "see what I can do" of a head banging young guitarist. I can scat/hum the lights solo which to me makes the song memorable. These solo's may take more time to create but I have to believe that Neal still has the talent.
Neal knows that. :) I think its the live show on the DVD that came with the "Revelation" album where you see Neal, at the very end of this song, throw in those three "All Along the Watchtower" chords as a nod to Hendrix. Neal feel asleep to Hendrix albums as a boy!
Prince wrote Purple Rain inspired by a Journey ballad, and years later some of Prince's guitar phrasing seems to have made it's way into Neil's vocabulary... Talk about a full circle! (I guess the fact that they where both massively influenced by Hendrix also plays a huge part.) Music is great! ❤️
I don't care what anyone else thinks, that tone and that playing is a 10/10.
Can't agree more...
Exactly!!!! Who could dislike this?!?!?!! Who???? And Why????
Hands down my fav player. Nobody can pick like him
A 62 strat that was on about everything from that time....and its for sale
Luckily, no-one is going to disagree with that assertion.
Beautiful little solo.
Such a badass guitar player. Love him
He was playing with Santana at age 15. When most people start reaching puberty, he reached awesomeness.
So underrated! Without a doubt one of my all time favorite players.
What i always loved about his playing is it ALWAYS has feel and melody!
Most guys these days just dont get it, they are all speed and no substance.
Like the Olympics or something? How did guitar become a sport in where the faster you are the better????
Pc Gaming 5150 ii
Neal is THE BEST hands down.... Appreciate your taste for talent..
Pc Gaming 5150 He is my favorite electric guitar player too. I like you.
Pc Gaming 5150 : He actually isn't underrated at all. Carlos Santana wanted him in his band long before he had a name. I've heard people like Clapton mention him about the same time. He has always been talented even as a teen. I'm an old fart so I remember the days . Take care!
What do you mean exactly by Underrated? Enough already with the So Underrated cliché. He's one of the most recognised and respected players there is.
Heart and soul of Journey. This band can go on with many singers as it has demonstrated but take out Neal and Journey is no more.
From a legal aspect, you are correct bc he is one of the owners of the band besides Mr. Cain
@@nunyabiihz8922 more important from the music aspect. no one can play his stuff like him. no one.
@@robvoyles bullcrap. I could...
Exactly like Santana.
@@buddywilliams5650 you can play with yourself....that's about it
The guy is a wizard on the guitar. 2 thumbs up.
THE TONE! THE TONE IS AMAZING!
This is quite possibly one of the most beautiful songs ever...brilliant solo, amazing control and creativity..I aspire to one day play like that! ;)
Thanks NEAL for your beautiful guitar playing !
One of my all time favorite guitarists. We just saw him again in Virginia Beach and I'm always amazed by the emotion he brings to his playing...Rock On Neal!!!
Pure genius that lick was, and I was like 20 y.o. when Journey released that tune, been lovin it ever since. Thanks Neal!
Damn, I love Neal's playing!
Love the way he plays...soothing.
Schon is a badass guitarist. His phrasing and tone are beautiful beyond words.
That clean tone is amazing...great phrasing as well, Neil. Love the chord jam in the beginning with the use of bass strings.
I've seen Journey in concert 4 times. I can't get enough of this guy. Neal Schon is so talented and amazing at what he does
I can listen to you play all night.
He’s been my favorite guitar player since 1978 when I was a kid. Amazing.
His melodies are so amazing. Neal Schon is incredible
One of the most underrated guitar player ever. What a tone this guy has.
the perfect combo of blues feel and chops. neals playing is always in my top 5. also one of the best songwriters of all time.
Absolutely a wonderful wonderful piece of video here! Bravo a million times over! Rawk rocks!
One of my favorite players- Neal Schon!!! This guy has the ability to shred or just play clean melodic solos like its no ones business
his playing inspired billions !!!

Neil (IMHO) is one of the best Guitar players to ever hit the stage....love his style and he was a big influence on me when I learned to play.
I have envied that lead for years and learned more than what you showed . I've got a range of scales from this video and can't thank you enough!
One of the masters of the guitar and a man who has lead a good clean meaningful life. I have enjoyed his playing from day dot when I first heard wheel in the sky.
I watch this every day!

Man .. You got the hottest sound coming out of that rig and your awesome level proficiency is a hot match for it. All the best ! Tom
Neal is a under rated player...musical genius.....
This video is iconic.
Neal, I knew you were a great player but damn! It's really nice to see you playing this piece by yourself. What a great style you have. It sounds perfect. Your why that band rocks.
AWESOMEEEEEE!!! Great Neal!
one of the most classic solos of all time, not to mention one of the best Strat solos ever
YES JAMES CAAN YOU CALLED IT. WHAT A BEAST WITH A GIUTAR IN HIS HANDS. RIDICULOUSLY TALENTED
Great video Thanks for posting!
his chordal playing is awesome, it shows what a consummate guitarist he is, he can do everything, from the meanest licks high up on the fret to just picking an open D chord.
Neal you are the man your the reason I play guitar if I only had the talent that he has in his nail clippings
I love his When You Love A Woman guitar solo the BEST GUITAR PLAYER!!
he is insane when he wants to be and then he can be so mellow and passionate!
1000% perfection!!! 🎸♥️🎸♥️
Neil has a great sense of Melody and his vibrato is priceless
What stands out to me most, it’s his tone and affects through his system do great sound.
amazing...
wow what a master :-)
Will folks stop saying he’s underrated, do you know what tHat means ! Neil is probably one on the top 5 rock players of all time, he’s not underrated in any way shape or form. Period!
No list anywhere has him as a top 5 rock guitarist lol
Stanko Zovak mate, lists are for lazy people and journalists!! That’s why Gilmore is always there!! 😂😱
I think when people say he is underrated...it's because you don't hear him mentioned much. It's usually music and/or guitar aficionados who know what a great player he is. With that group of people he is definitely not underrated.
Wow that tone!
well, i was drinking, and i said is enough, but man, when I see this video i said my self, carry on dude, drink so much and feel the power of schon, MASTER

amazing, he plays easier than people drink water
Have you seen me drink water?
hes amazing man

One of the TOP 3 to 5 writers/players/musicians in the world, to ever play or emote on a guitar. There is NOTHING he cant play, nothing.
I would pay money for a qood quality version of this:D Awesome sound even through intercom compression
Amazing.
Probably the best guitarist ever I think. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO melodic.
One of the best ever
beautiful strat
thx to neal... great sound!
Neal Schon we love you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Really Good!!!!
...and that's far more priceless that being able to play a gabillion notes per second.
Very insightful man.
All, STOP HATING ON NEAL's Java-the-Hut-gut! It's adorable....in a kind of "Honey, look at that guys' rolls!" kind of way ...
good stuff enjoyed this
That was cool
Amazing tone

Neal Schon hace unas melodias preciosas, muy original.... uno de los grandes guitarristas.
I heard that too, but in all the footage ive seen of him he seems like a nice guy
Tasty Solo!
That had me spellbound
Awesome.
Sounds like Hendrix!
jack flash Love players who understand chording/harmony!!!
It's supposed to! :)
One of the most melodic players around!
I agree with you, man. Actually, it makes me sad that people feel they have to put Carlos down to exalt Neil. They are both awesome. I'll never forget when Santana III came out. This dude can play!
neal is the reason i got my les paul years ago
And with a Fender!!
this is feeling!
No mistaking Neal's sweet tone.
Wow that was cool.
Wow! This cat's got some amazing technique and his tone is just sick! Wow! Neal Schon is bad ass!
goosebumps!
Timeless playing! Stuff like this is still topical, can't say the same about all the 80s' shred canon.
EPIC!
great vid!
Awesome tone he gets from that Strat.
Schon is awesome. Time to start buttoning those shirts though.
Naw hes from the 70's.
This man RADIATES the guitar
On this clip he is trying out some single-coil-sized EMGs.
Neal knows that. :)
I think its the live show on the DVD that came with the "Revelation" album where you see Neal, at the very end of this song, throw in those three "All Along the Watchtower" chords as a nod to Hendrix.
Neal feel asleep to Hendrix albums as a boy!
I can almost hear Steve singing along with it. Damn, I miss that!
Prince wrote Purple Rain inspired by a Journey ballad, and years later some of Prince's guitar phrasing seems to have made it's way into Neil's vocabulary... Talk about a full circle!
(I guess the fact that they where both massively influenced by Hendrix also plays a huge part.)
