Wow! Thanks so much for your work in ALL of this, but more specifically for our family here in Portland. I will be 65 next year, and my husband is applying for disability, so we might be dealing with that. Honestly, the info in this video is so encouraging. Wishing you and your family awesome roads ahead on this wonderfully helpful tour. Next stop for us: Nebraska, where we might move to be with the hub's fam. Best to you!
Kaiser is one of the choices for public employee retirees. It cost a bit more than the midlevel regular Kaiser pla. But it is more like the coverage when employed.
Wow! Oregon is a leader in this! My last manager, in California, loved-loved-loved Kaiser Permanente for her and her family. I can see her sticking with that when she's 65. Here in Delaware, there is Christiana Health Care in the northern (most populous) county where I live, they are a gianormous system like Kaiser, everything, from pediatric/family/geriatric, all specialties, all labs, imaging, etc. It's almost difficult to avoid them 😂 (not that I'm trying). Enjoy Oregon while you're there!!!
Video killed the radio star, and digital did the same to Blockbuster. Technology is a great disruptor. However, it also brought us UA-cam, especially The Retirement Nerds, which allows us to bypass information sources that do not look out for our best interests. Thanks for your interesting and informative travelogue, Erik! Keep on truckin'.😀
If you’ve been on Kaiser for years on employer plans it’s daunting to change unless you had a really bad experience. Also cost goes way up as Kaiser is often the base plan with employers so you may be used to paying minimal for health insurance. For instance I’m still a few years away from Medicare eligibility but if I were to go on now my monthly cost would go up by $150 for just part B. Hard to also add in supplement, etc. Easier to stick with Kaiser for cost and being familiar with system and doctors. In Oregon Kaiser has a lot of very qualified doctors. My husband had a lot of health issues the past few years and saw many different Kaiser specialists. I look at all their bios and most have gone to top schools. I’ve been impressed and satisfied with most of them. In some ways it may be easier for them not having to deal with prior authorizations (although still needing to stay within Kaiser guidelines). Also it’s not as difficult as some think to go outside the system for specialty care if Kaiser doesn’t offer it.
Excellent information regarding Medicare in Oregon. I'm one of the people who detests Kaiser. Anyway, have a safe and fun trip to California. Try and dodge all of the wildfires!
Great video! I’m a bit confused about your Kaiser Permanente statements. The Kaiser Advantage Plan is administered by Kaiser and Kaiser employees, isn’t it? Meaning that it not some 3rd party organization that denies or approves physician (another Kaiser employee) service authorization. How does a doc ‘fight’ for what s/he thinks is best for the patient when the fight would be with the employer? I think that’s what many find objectionable. I myself have MODA supplement plan through Oregon PERS, which has worked very well for me. Actually, I don’t know whether it’s a plan G or N - the premium is double what you presented but I suspect the benefits differ.
That is one of the many problems with Kaiser, all doctors are required to adhere to their rules, regulations, restrictions and protocols - their bonuses depend on it. It is a conflict of interest, that is why many of their doctors leave.
Do they track Medicare plan selection rates of people at the time of their first selection vs. for all people? I suppose that the rate for Supplement might start out higher than 21% nationwide, but drops over time because it's easier to switch from Supplement to Advantage than the other way around.
I watched this video last night and it was very timely. I have a friend who signed up on Medicare on her birthday in September of 2023. She spoke to me about being unable to switch from her Advantage Plan to Plan G because he had to do that within the first 90 days. After I saw your video yesterday, I sent her the link and she looked at it and said, "I can't find anything online about this rule. This is a scam." My brain about exploded and told her this was not a scam. Are you able to identify the link online on the Oregon Medicare site (I've searched and I can't find a thing) that outlines this rule? She did say she (1) signed up on her birthday for Part A (2) and also for Part B, and (3) for her Advantage Plan ... I asked her and she said all three were the same date (her birthday). My brain about exploded mainly how easily she gave up and also the bad information she got by calling Medicare inquiring about changing her plan. I am only 64 (will turn 65 next year) and have been looking at your UA-cam channel to understand all the intricacies with Medicare and they have been so helpful. Thank you.
regarding Kaiser....DO NOT choose it! My sister had the WORST CARE EVER and it greatly effected her health outcomes. We knew she had had a stroke, but it took 6 weeks to get the MRI and for them to give her the appropriate diagnosis so that she could go to a rehab hospital. In reality, she had ALS and they didn't diagnose it🙁
Oh hey...you're in my town, beautiful Bend Oregon!!!

Three guys walk into a Blockbuster...
Haha! I like where this is going...
Thanks! Wonderful to see a Blockbuster Video again! Brings back memories of practically living there! Would rent 3 a day sometimes!
It's EXACTLY as you remember it. The sights, the smells, the organization of videos. Super cool!

Washington, Oregon and Northern California are so beautiful. Don’t work so much that you miss out on it!
They are amazing! The family time has been wonderful! 😁

Washington was just before Oregon 😀

Ther is a ab ohp plan that is by the stateit still exists
Ill be 65 in 2025, is there a deduction from the monthly check amount? Is plain Medicare free??
Part A is no cost if you’ve paid into Medicare taxes through FICA for at least 10 years of your life. Part B has a monthly cost based on your income.
Are there any other financial topics to cover other than Medicare? It’s been a month now.
Oregon is similar to WA,
Yes. Better in some ways. Not as much freedom to jump on a supplement plan.
