I live in Germany. They banned bags and straws years ago. I have never tried a metal or glass straw. Places like McDonalds just changed the lid - so you can drink out of it. We hated it for a while, then got used to it.

The real problem is this doesn’t address anything, if you go through a drive thru, get a drink to go, whatever you will still get a straw with your drink.

I can't imagine drinking something hot through a straw, certainly not a plastic one. I drink cold drinks and some of the companies have biodegradable straws. Paper feels nasty in your mouth, in my opinion, and don't hold up well to cold drinks, either. Biodegradable straws are the way to go.
I was at Dick’s Sporting Goods yesterday, and they were selling packages for $15. I was surprised to see them in-store, and they had plenty in stock. However, $20 straws seem like a pretty niche product.
