I am a German people. And I see the problem; racism, and a general refusal to offer proper support.
      Psychiatric support.
And maybe don't ban asylum seekers from working. So all they can do is sit around and be bored.
How about assigning them a mentor, who then teaching them stuff, or letting them work as Azubi. Help them integrate, and build a new life.
And maybe have the BAMF treat people better.
When you call them, they just want you to go away. They'll go as far as to lie to you (claiming they're not responsible for something that they are).
There are a lot of productive things that can be done to improve this situation, and all we get are "let's ban knives".
Germany can do much better than this.

That you flee Ukraine because you are scared to be bombed, is something completely different then Afghanistan and Syria, where the peope are not happy with their living conditions.
There is no acceptance for paying them support and increasing the housing crisis, while regions in there country are safe.

Three ethnic Germans killed 10 people in the period from 2000 to 2007. Somehow those cases are also quite spectacular, but have largely been forgotten and without consequences. A job contract, fluent english, but also basic German speaking skills (enough for directions, subsistence, etc). I knew exactly how difficult life would be here as an immigrant but I was mentally ready and prepared for the shift. I also don't agree with a migartion police which is not considering the reasons and the background of the people coming in. I think that working and integrating with the culture are essential indicators that an immigrant has good intentions. Unfortunately, the lack of a proper plan from good politicians help the bad politicians from AFD to rise in people's consideration.

It's heartbreaking to see innocent lives lost.
The West's actions to destabilize countries for their own profit have finally backfired. Both Algeria and Syria were devastated by Western intervention, and now, where do you expect all those people to go? The same devastation occurred in Iraq and Afghanistan, where millions were killed, economies were shattered, and then simply abandoned by the West! After years of these actions, this is the reality we face today and I am not surpristed. Good luck, Europe!

Why one of main point in regards of "What Germany should do to increase protection?" is Let's discuss data protection. Police has data about all those people. Same for Solingen as for Stuttgart knife death by member of "well known to police family with 118 charges". As Police knows those and all other suspects not from suspicion but by people being bitten, stabbed, etc. why Police cannot execute what is supposed to do? What is making them useless? Which rules, regulations, decisions? Isn't that more into the point question? and not GDPR :/

The recent terrorist attack in Solingen is also being blown up by the media into a huge issue. It was neither a major attack, nor were firearms or explosives involved, nor was it an organized group, nor were the federal government's laws inadequate. (The number of fatalities in the 2016 terror attack at Breitscheidplatz in Berlin was over 4 times higher than in Solingen and the terror attack in NY in 2001 had 1000x more victims.) Nevertheless, the government is being held accountable for it. Germany is a federal state, which means that power is decentralized, similar to the USA, not centralized like in France or the former GDR. The East Germans think - because they are uneducated and they know the centralization of power from their former dictatorship - that the government can be held accountable for every grievance, but the federal government has much less authority and power than many people think. Much is regulated and financed at the state level (e.g. police work) or at the municipal level.

Easy. You let in a bunch of very different people, legally and illegally. A lot of them also come from war-torn corners of the planet and carry the baggage of normalized calamity and trauma. What did you think was going to happen?
