    That trim level is offered by my local dealership with a $6,200 discount off MSRP. You won't find a Camry or an Accord with that kind of discount. I personally own a 2015 Sonata. For the price and features, the 2018 is a great value. Drive it hard and keep it in the family and you won't have to be concerned with depreciation being a factor.

      stvnburg what makes you think the Camry will last 2 times longer then a Hyundai? I’ve had them all my life in my family and also work in the automotive industry and have seen more issues with Toyota’s then Hyundai’s on top of that poor operations on keeping cars up to point.

  • @BanBiofuels

    The Sonata is hands down my favorite sedan for 2018. Hyundai dealers are known to give good discounts, so the money you save with the Camry's better gas mileage is more than made up for by a much lower Sonata real world cost. I love the German designed style of the Sonata and their reliability is now rated as good as or better than Honda. I hate the Toyota styling on almost all of their new "edgy" vehicles. I don't want a car as ugly as the Camry or Corolla to last for 20 years. I want a German designed, Korean built sedan that is a work of industrial art, not an evil looking cartoon character car from another planet.

      Agreed...!!! Hyundai has certainly upped there game BIG TIME for this new 2018 model Sonata. It's very "Audish" in it's styling something that the new Camry can't compete with. I'm just not a fan of there big plastic front grills. And i've NEVER been a fan of the Honda Accord's exterior or interior.

    I've seen the car in person. The more I look at it the more I grow to like it. Still like the front of my '17 Sonata Hybrid better but the rear on the '18 looks sleeker.

    I watched both this report by Dave Erickson and that of the Mazda 6 and came away disillusioned about his reports You can tell that he is biased against the Sonata although he finds no real fault with it. Consider some of what he said: That the Sonata is a good 'commuter car' indicates that he thinks the Mazda 6 is something else. That is a negative comment. The exterior straight line design of the Sonata is refined compared to the Mazda 6 which design reveals a sagging line aft of the front fender. The dashboard is far more elegant in the Sonata as are the steering wheel mounted controls. Sonata uses well-marked piano type switches, Mazda has a few old-fashioned push-in switches. The opened hood on the Mazda is held in place with a steel rod, hydraulic cylinders on the Sonata. You can get side window shades from Sonata, not from Mazda. Bright metal exhaust tips on Sonata, hack-sawed exhaust pipes on Mazda. Sonata has an unequaled warantee. Sonata's prices are lower on each of its cars however similarly equipped. I also noticed that Dave told us that the front, side and rear of the Sonata are all new. We know that Mazda style was introduced 3 years ago. What's going on, Dave?

    I used to sell Hyundai back in 2011-2013 and just got my first one.. 2018 Sonata sport 2.0T.. Black on black.. nice sporty ride, and Hyundai had tons of rebates. I drove a 2015 Mazda 6 for last three years. I would recommend both cars.. I totaled the Mazda last month and would go back to it.. but the new 2.5T in the Mazda 6 was too exp. With the rebates you cant beat the value of the new Sonata turbo!

    I have the 2017 sonata sport. Great , comfortable and beautiful car. Camry is overrated because Toyota doesn't want to cater to buyers like me by offering Android auto. I average 35 mpg on eco mode, similar to what I was getting with my 2014 Mazda 3 sport. I'm pretty stoked and plus the great warranty.

    2018 Hyundai Sonata Limited 2.0T+ (the very hard to find and highly sought after, now certified used, mid-year refresh with the panoramic sunroof) owner here, bought it 4 months ago with only 12,000 miles on it, basically a three year old new car! The one person who “owned” it was a 72 yr old man who leased it and took really great care of it. Rarely drove it, obviously with that low mileage. And kept the interior in pristine condition, the protective films were even still on all the interior lights! I can say from personal experience, this top of the line Sonata trim is absolutely fantastic! It’s a sexy, sleek, luxury looking sedan with all the bells & whistles you might want, even for today’s standards. I’m really very impressed with this car, it looks similar to any of the much higher priced actual luxury sedans and rides like a dream too. I haven’t found one thing to complain about, honestly.

  • @farcinue
    @farcinue 6 років тому

    With the trend of sedans having sloping backs, I wish someone would offer it with a hatchback. It would be way more practical and give us an alternative to the ubiquitous suv. The only choices are expensive: bmw gran coupe, audi sportback, Kia stinger.

    I have a 2017 Sonata SE. And although I like the looks very much I also like the '18 Sonata. But Hyundai did change a few things for '18 that I don't like.
    The storage below the climate control no longer has a cover that closes. Anything stored there is open to prying eyes.
    The CD player is gone. Probably for good. Which means I have to convert all my music to mp3 and play it through the USB port. And with the USB port occupied I cannot use android auto.
    But otherwise I think the Sonata is still a pretty cool family sedan.

      MAC ACRZ: looks are subjective, but i kind of prefer this grill on the Sonata than i do the Elantra. but the body style on the Sonata is still the same. i didn't have a problem with the other grill, but i do think this grill is more attractive. it reminds me of an Audi, because the body style has a similar shape.

    I hate that they killed the panoramic roof option, I love them. Compared to the 15-17 models, these sport models doesn't look sporty at all to me. It'll take me some time to get used to this models design. They still look weird. Look at the new Azera, not that's beautiful!

    The 2011-2013 Sonata models had the best looking body and interior, especially the sport. This isn’t that bad but those models aged better. Only thing with the current one is more features like sensors standard and back not the front and side.

    Hi Dave thanks for the review ! Did you ever try the Sonata Eco?
    My wife got one for $18 500 as a 2017 model ( Wich I believe is a great deal), we got an Amazing 45 mpg Highway regularly (on Eco mode 70 mph cruise). The car does have a lot of torque and a really good peak up wich was the good surprise.
    We tried the new accord and the new Camry both good but they felt less comfortable for some reason and were about an additional $7k.
    Talking about the accord any review coming soon?

    Great review, meh car. Good value, however. Disappointed they got rid of the pano sunroof for '18... And I'm no fan of cars that have grilles that take up the "entire front of the car", if you know what I mean... Lexus, Cadillacs, some newer Hyundai models, etc.

      The pano roof had problems with creaking noises that were caused by flexing between the carbon fiber pano roof frame and steel car body. I had a 2015 that they couldn't fix and I finally got rid of the car...yes the noise was THAT bad!

      Alan Pak It's the same as the 2015. It's basically and front/ rear, and dash lift.

    Dave I will like to know what car you own and why you bought it. Recently I am looking for a Jeep Patriot 2012(or some well close), but I still have a Mazda 3 2009 I like to know your opinion and suggestion. Also I would like to thank you for your work and your reviews I have learn a lot thanks Dave.

      Stay away from the patriot. I have never met anyone that likes it after living with it for any period of time. Slow excelerartion, very cheaply made, trans problems,. Look at an older CRV, or Mazda CX-5. If you want a good reliable suv. Or better yet a subaru

    • @ndawg79
      @ndawg79 6 років тому +1

      The Patriot is not that bad of a vehicle. Stay away from the CVT though. We have a 07 Patriot with the 5 speed and we love ours. I am also part of a patriot group and people on that love their patriots and they up grade them as well. They lift them and all sorts of things. We are a Jeep family my daily driver is a 02 Grand Cherokee. And we love our Jeeps. But you go get what you want. All vehicles take maintenance.

    Wait to you have to use the warranty and they keep telling you they can't find anything wrong with the car as the engine is knocking just because the check engine light isn't on. These cars will leave you in a dangerous situation and I'll never buy one again. Just complete cheap crap.

    It's an ok car. I'd rather get a Camry though. You get better gas mileage, room, a smoother ride, much better reliability.
    It's best to spend the extra 2,000 up front and get a more substantial car.

      Brian Lawrance the new camry is fire this year. but in the past years dull as hell. have you bought a recent built Korean car the build is a lot more Superior than Japanese models. i had a 2014 soul and everything works nothing looks cheap. now i have a 2017 crv and umm i can see a lot of cut corners and cheapness. my advice test drive them both

    6-speed slush box puts it two gears behind King Camry, 4 gears behind Honda Accord.
    This cost-cutting will show itself in acceleration and fuel economy.
    I think Toyota is right here. 8 is enough. 10 is too much. 6 not enough.

    • @toddmediumwellingtoniii478

      Nissan TitanWarrior The amount of gears on a transmission does not determine how well it performs based on the applications

    • @InvestBetter.
      @InvestBetter. 6 років тому +2

      What are you babbling about? Cars with more gears can accelerate faster and/or get better fuel economy, usually both, over a car with fewer gears. that's why there are no more 4 speed automatics. The only downside to adding 10 gears transmissions to all cars is the cost of development and the diminishing returns over an 8-speed, for example. CVTs have infinite gears for this very reason.

    • @CapELarry
      @CapELarry 6 років тому +2

      The review is actually wrong. The turbo gets a new 8 speed auto.

    • @dougn2350
      @dougn2350 6 років тому

      Z Mich ... true the Sonata turbo gets an 8 spd tranny but Dave is testing the Sonata Sport 2.4 in this video. So this one has a 6 spd. Which is fine for a car like this.

    • @IReahpZz
      @IReahpZz 6 років тому +2

      Nissan TitanWarrior don't defend cvts. Sonata turbo has an 8 speed and the Honda Accord only has a 10 speed auto in the top trim. Cvt is the standard and again cvts are garbage to drive. I'd rather get a sti ck and drive through city traffic all day than deal with a whiny cvt
