I don't know how many versions of this song I've heard, but this is one of the best. Tim's voice, phrasing, and the solo guitar arrangement make me want to listen to this song over and over again. Well, that and it makes me want to pick up my guitar and fumble my way through the song.
This is the type of cover that makes me want to play guitar for days on end without stopping and simultaneously put it down and never pick it back up again as I know I will never be able to play like this. Killer cover, 10/10
Hey Tim... Fellow Tele/Jazzmaster player (x 57 years), love your channel. Would you amend your credits: "Great song by Matt Dennis," to "... Matt Dennis and Tom Adair," who wrote the lyrics and happens to be my father. Let's Get Away From it All, The Night We Called it a Day, Violets for Her Furs, In the Blue of Evening, etc. are some of his other titles sung/played by every jazz legend from Billie Holiday, Bill Evans, Charlie Parker, Ella to Diane Krall, etc, etc,(oh yeah... Bobs Dylan on Letterman). My wife and I went to NYC when Dad was inducted into SHOF and was nominated for an Academy Award, in '56 (Grammy later), for best title song. Also head writer of the original Mickey Mouse Club... and wrote scripts (not music), for about 17 of the sitcoms of the 60's. My Three Sons, The Munsters, My Favorite Martian, Gomer Pyle (apologies to my jarhead friends), etc. Also apologies for bragging, but at 70 years old, I rather enjoy it... happy to report I still play (improvised "Ethno/Latin/Brazilian/Middle-Eastern/Asian) jazz guitar a couple of hours a day (Becker and Fagan were big influence x 20 years)... and working on, like you, getting some videos done. God bless you sir, (bless ASCAP :-)... no hard feelings about credits, you're keeping my father's music alive. (I wasn't going to comment, figuring it was an instrumental... but you had to go and sing! 😎) Thanks brother... you're an artist with great chops (yeah, I'm almost that cool... not quite.)
Thanks Rick, I added your dad to the credit. Wonderful song, I’ve loved it since I first heard Chet Baker do it. Thanks for your great and informative comment.
Dear Tim- Wonderful version of one of my favourite standards. And dear Rick, not the least- Wow, your father must have been a special kind of wonderful person to capture so much sensitivity and humour in his lyrics. Please post more info about his work- It’s so important to keep the stories from the golden era of jazz alive- And Tim PLEASE do more songs of his.
beautiful !
Wonderful, Tim. Don't know how you manage to sing and to play so well at the same time, but sure wish I could do that!
This is criminally underrated
