oh no Father, the pharisees were NOT part of the true church. ever.
Jesus said that
1) the pharisees made nothing of the law of God and didnt follow it because they follow their traditions of men. (the Jewish Talmud, which they follow today)
2) they are the devils children and lie like the devil who is the father of lies.
This is a terrible parable, very vague...why don't we all be rascals like the tax collector, then go and admit our error that is enough to cancel it ......!! good grief...why bother to be like the pharisee, even though he is not doing God a favor obeying him. it is every man duty...... it is fact that he is a far better man than the nasty tax collector.....
