Should You Apply the Front & Rear Brakes AT THE SAME TIME?

  • In the community section, I created a poll about which brakes do you primarily use. More than 15% voted for the rear brakes. This means out of 8.8m motorcycle riders in the United States, 1.3m people need to learn to PRIMARILY use the front brakes and only under special occasions to use the rear. This is a staggering amount of people just in the United States alone! Imagine other parts of the world?

Sorry, no. You're supposed to use both front and rear for stopping. Stop preaching to people bad habits. Braking at maximum efficiency happens when both are used, not one or the other. Additionally, when you have to emergency brake, and you're not used to using the rear brakes, you'll at best do a huge stoppie, or at worst low side.

Yes, you should be using both brakes. The rear is for stabilizing the bike during the braking for most corners, if you want to slide out the rear use more force on the rear and less on the front.

Tire pressure and chain lubrication are essential! Other than keeping it clean, checking for oil levels, tire wear and any leaky suspension seals. Other than that, check your manual for service intervals and off-season storage.

Most owners manuals state using both brakes .you
Using both brakes coming to a stop especially on hills results in a smooth stop .
Personally my logic is if the front is 90 per cent , and rear is only 10 per cent , 100 % is better than 90 per cent .
And another thing some rear brakes are more powerful than others .
Progressive braking in corners using both brakes is safe and effective for moderate legal speed riders in corners .
If your front brake fails , and you are only using that front brake on a hairpin corner , and you are on the gas , that rear brake may have slowed you down.
I think the experts who invent and design motorcycles give good advice in their manuals.

To me it depends on the bike you are riding, and the conditions you are riding in. So I don’t think there’s just one right answer. Myself, I use the front & rear brakes at the same time every time I ride. The emphasis of course is on the front as that is where most of the physics of braking are taking place. But I like to use the rear at the same time as I think it stabilizes the bike and shortens the overall braking distance.

some moto scooters which do not have antilock brakes are required to have front and rear brakes linked .. as front lock up may occur ..the amount of rear brake used on a a very quick stop would not be enough to cause a rear brake to skid ..the front brake would also provide the majority of the stopping power...there are some videos on this on UA-cam also

brakes on a car works simultaneously to utilise brakes to maximum. Same goes to a bike. Only difference on bike is that at the very end of braking, you release front brake and continue with rear. Not a rocket science

    • @PetroHead

Cars have 4 wheels, bikes have two making it much less stable. This is why there are two levers and not one controlling both. But anyway.. I welcome people disagreeing but you forgot to tell me your qualifications.

    • @adrianhettich9087

@@PetroHead Two levers to modulate your braking options corresponding to different scenarios/weather conditions because for example, you don't want 90% only on one wheel in the rain? Yes, bike is less stable than a car, but you ( as a person who did few track days) know exactly that rear brakes works as a stabiliser as well.
And qualifications? do i need those if i disagree?

    • @PetroHead
      @PetroHead  4 місяці тому

@adrianhettich9087 your original comment made it obvious that you use both all the time. I don’t use rear for track at all. I ride advanced group on the limit using front only.

@@PetroHead Track is a different world and so different rules applies. I am not trying to take any credit from you. As a matter of fact, i have less experience on a bikes than you. My opinion is based purely on my instructors ( both initial licence and advance riding ) judgment. There are moments where rear brakes are useless 100%, but their view was to apply rear brakes every time, not to help with stopping per say, but to stabilise the bike and if situation arises (if suddenly you would need 100% braking power from your bike ), you wouldn't need to move your feet from a peg onto a brake lever (1-2 secs) because you're already on it - if that makes sense?
I had such situation, where a car in front of me started to slowdown a bit, but suddenly he brake - checked me for obvious reasons. Luckily i had both brakes engaged and stopped immediately. Yes it was my fault to allow this situation to happen because i had no sufficient gap between him and myself.

O use the rear brakes more often than the front.
I use the rear brakes to gradually slow down, then use the front for the last few feet.
I also use only the rear brakes at a stop light if I’m in neutral, so that I can rest my hands.
Front brakes for me are for quicker stops, or if I’m in gear at a stop light

    • @PetroHead

      1. Use front more than rear.
      2. Use front to gradually slow down then rear for under 15 mph
      3. Stay in gear at all times.
Are you a new rider Or just old bad habits?

      What makes them bad habits?
I use the rear more than the front because I’m actually paying attention to what’s happening, and rarely need that much stopping power.
Engine braking does the majority of the work that my rear brakes can’t.
I stay in gear if there’s the possibility of being rear ended, but if multiple cars are stopped behind me, neutral is perfectly fine.
You spout out these “rules” but haven’t provided any benefit that would justify them.

    • @PetroHead
      @PetroHead  4 місяці тому

I have more videos on the channel about all reasons. If you’re really curious check out the playlist.
Hypothetically speaking.. you only ride 25mph and obey all speed limits. Good. However, rear braking force diminishes very quickly because the front has dual calipers and much bigger brake pads -vs- the rear. Because rear has only single caliper and much smaller pads, it will wear out much faster and will have significant less stopping power. I think that alone is good reason to use front mostly. whatever do what you want no one listens. lol

Front brakes always have more power: bike mass transfers to the front, increasing contact patch, increasing stopping power.

I think we all know that.
In an emergency stop situation, front brakes are essential, but if you’re actually paying attention, looking ahead, and riding accordingly, you would rarely need that much stopping power.
Just did a 180 mile trip two days ago, I think I used the front brakes 3-4 times total except for that last few feet at a stop light.
